NWA Worldwide 1/28/1989
We see clips of Kendall Windham turning on Eddie Gilbert in a tag match against Barry Windham and JJ Dillion.
David Crockett and Tony Schiavone are our hosts.
They say they have a special main event with Michael Hayes and The Junkyard Dog vs The Russian Assassins. They then run down the rest of the show.
Jim Cornette is in the ring and brings out The Midnight Express.
The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane) vs Mike Justice and Mike Jackson
The jobbers attack before The Express get their robes off. The Express fight back and Jackson is knocked out of the ring. Justice takes a double back elbow. Stan hits kicks on Justice then trips him into an Eaton elbow drop. Stan back elbows Justice then spin kicks him.
Eaton punches Justice then slams him. Eaton hits a top rope legdrop on Justice. Justice then takes a double flapjack and is pinned.
Thoughts: It was a quick one here with the jobbers cheapshotting The Express before it started then getting put down quick.
The Express and Jim Cornette are interviewed after. Cornette says people think they can jump them from behind. Cornette says he has Paul E. where he wants him and says him and his punks will be history. Tony Schiavone shows us a video from Paul E. Paul says there's no more Bunkhouse Stampede for his crew. Paul says he has Cornette where he wants him and and says Cornette is out of the NWA.
Cornette says Paul takes any shortcut there is. Cornette says they can take shortcuts too. Cornette says every man has a goal in his life and says his mission and goal in life is to get Paul out of wrestling. He says he's taking the biggest risk and finally has Paul where he wants him.
We cut ahead. JJ Dillion is interviewed with Kendall Windham and Barry Windham. JJ says Kendall has always been a great athlete. He says he was waiting for the right time and place to see the light. He says The Windham Family has been united Horsemen style. Barry says they aren't here to win matches, they are here to hurt someone and make sure they are noticed. Barry says now that Kendall is a Horsemen, more will take notice. Barry says Horsemen are forever and so are The Windham's. Magnum TA talks about how The Windham's got united.
Barry and Kendall Windham vs Keith Steinborn and ? Holiday
JJ Dillon is with The Windham's. Barry armdrags one of the jobbers. Ken jumping knees a jobber then side headlocks him. Barry hits the jobber in the ribs and hammerlock slams him. Barry armbars the jobber.
Ken takes down the jobber by the arm and does an interesting hammerlock variation. Barry drops Keith with a shot then Barry armbars Holiday. Ken hammerlock slams Holiday and hammerlocks him. Holiday then submits.
Thoughts: The finish wasn't that good here with Holiday just quitting out of nowhere without much build. The Windham's just worked the jobbers arms until the finish.
"Hacksaw" Butch Reed vs Max McGuyver
Reed says to get a look at a real man. Reed shoves Max off the lock-up. Reed hits elbows on Max then bangs his head off the buckles. Reed hits corner spears on Max then hiptosses him. Reed back body drops Max. Reed then hits a top rope diving lariat on Max and gets the pin.
Thoughts: This was all squash here with Max putting up no fight against Reed.
Magnum TA interviews JJ Dillion and Butch Reed. Mag asks why Reed is here. JJ says Reed is a magnificent athlete and has come to seek his advice. JJ says he's a great athlete and that's all that needs to be said.
Reed says what's between him and JJ is their business. Reed says he counts a lot of green, kicks a lot of tail and takes a lot of names. JJ and Reed then call out Eddie Gilbert and Lex Luger. Reed says he's here for a reason, not for a season.
Michael PS Hayes and The Junkyard Dog vs The Russian Assassins
Paul Jones is with The Russians. The four fight to start and trade punches. The faces get the edge. Hayes hits corner punches on a Russian and is tripped. Hayes takes an elbow drop then is backbreakered.
Hayes is booted against the ropes then has his eyes raked. Hayes' head is banged off the buckles then he is booted. Hayes hits nice punches on a Russian then hits a nice bulldog off a hiptoss attempt.
Dog comes in and hits punches and headbutts. He bangs The Russian's heads together and lariats one over the top rope. Dog pulls a Russian in but Jones trips Dog. The ref sees it and The Russian's are DQ'd.
Thoughts: It was a short one and wasn't too much of note here. The Russian's just did basic punches, boots and elbows. Hayes' bulldog off the hiptoss was nice.
Dog is stomped on 3v1 after. Hayes tries to help but is knocked away. Hayes then grabs a chair and The Russian's run.
Michael Hayes and JYD are interviewed. Dog says every dog needs a bone to chew on. He says Paul Jones has gotten him and Hayes all riled up. Dog says he won't take anymore. Hayes calls Jones a communistic Benedict Arnold. Hayes says authority won every time he fought them. But he says if he throws a big enough tantrum and gets mean enough, he gets what he wants. Hayes says they want Paul Jones in the ring. Hayes says they came to the NWA to get up top and look down. Hayes says they will have to force the situation if they don't get Jones in the ring.
The Varsity Club (Mike Rotunda and Kevin Sullivan) vs ? and ?
Kevin beats up on a jobber and bangs his head off the buckles. Kev chops the jobber up and the jobber takes a double clothesline. Mike hits a suplex then an elbow drop. Mike euros the other jobber then back elbows him.
Kevin bangs the jobber's head off the mat then chops him. Kevin pounds on the other jobber and that jobber's head is banged off Mike's foot. Mike hits a double underhook suplex. Kevin double stomps the jobber then kneels on him to pin him.
Thoughts: It was a quick squash here with the jobbers getting nothing in. Kev and Mike were moving well though and kept up a fast pace.
Mike Rotunda and Kevin Sullivan are interviewed after. Kevin says him and Mike were in a saloon. They said The LOD were in a bar and says without the makeup on, they were ugly. He says they looked like two sissies. He says they think they are the bullies but Mike Rotunda is a wrestling machine. We see clips of The LOD jumping Steve Williams and Kevin Sullivan with Mike Rotunda helping out. Kevin says any form of The Varsity Club can beat them any day of the week. Kev says he will open up The LOD's mouth, jump down their throat, rip their hearts out and give it to someone who cares. Mike says there's a lot of stupid people in this world and Rick Steiner has to be one of the biggest ones. He says he cares about getting his title back and says he will play with him first then hurt him. Kevin says The LOD say they dine on danger but he will make them choke.
Magnum TA interviews Ric Flair. Ric says he's one of the most influential businessmen in the world. He says he has control of his life 24 hours a day. He says JJ Dillon signed a contract to wrestle a mystery opponent, not Ricky Steamboat so that contract is null. Ric says he has house and boats and can get any woman he wants because he's the world champ. He says Ric Flair is the name and Ric Flair is the champ. He says Steamboat walked in under another name or character after thinking he would retire. He says Steamboat got the cold sweat to return because he's unfulfilled. He says Steamboat is a man among men and an athlete but until he's been the champ, he is not the man he wants to be. He says Steamboat came back into his life unannounced and walked in his backdoor. Ric says he has bled and sweat to be the champ. He says he doesn't care how hard Steamboat wants his title, he has to earn it. He says he has to beat Flair and to be the man, you gotta beat the man.
Al Perez vs Agent Steel
Al sends out Steel and the camera's cut to women in the crowd. Steel is dropped throat first on the rails. The announcers talk about how exciting it is for Steamboat to be back in the NWA. Al drops Steel with a punch then back elbows him.
Al snapmares Steel the knee drops him. Steel is thrown out then dropped throat first on the rail again. Al back body drops Steel then clubs on him. Al whirlybirds Steel.
Al drops Steel with a punch then pins him.
Thoughts: Al winning with a punch was kind of weak here. Al wasn't very creative here as he did the throat drop on the rails twice.
Overall thoughts: This was all squash with the one non-squash being about 2 minutes long. I wouldn't recommend this as there wasn't all that much to it.
