SWS Super World Sports 9/9/1990

SWS Super World Sports 9/9/1990

Notes - This is a very unusual video. They show clips of other matches while matches are going on. The commentator for this also talks in Japanese and shouts out a bunch of English phrases. He's not bad at it either.

One Night Tournament - 2nd Round - Shunji Takano vs. Kendo Nagasaki

We get clips of Shunji Takano vs Fumihiro Niikura before this starts. Shunji hits a nice lariat then a hard rolling koppo kick to win.

We then gets clips of Kendo Nagasaki vs Shinichi Nakano. Nakano hits a top rope dropkick and totally misses an enzugiri. Nakano takes a stun gun. Kendo piledrivers him and pins him.

We go back to Shunji Takano vs. Kendo Nagasaki

They lock up and Ken throws him out. Ken hits some nasty clubs to the back and bangs his head off a table. Ken hits hard open chair shots to the back then folds the chair and chairs him. Shun is thrown into the rails and into the front row.

They get in the ring and Ken hits wild chair shots to the back. Ken then stomps and stands on him. The ref gets shoved. Ken chokes him more as the ref tries anything. The ref then DQ's Kendo.

Thoughts:
Kendo beat the ever loving crap out of Shunji here. If you want to say wrestling is fake, go watch a Kendo Nagasaki match. You couldn't pay me to be in Shunji's shoes here.

Kendo chairs him more after the bell. Kendo piledrivers him onto chairs then he finally leaves.

One Night Tournament - 2nd Round - Naoki Sano vs. Samson Fuyuki

Sano high kicks him and kicks him while he's down. We cut to Fuyuki vs The Great Kabuki. Fuyuki drops him with spinning heel kicks. Fuyuki comes off the top and Kabuki green mists him, getting DQ'd.

We see clips of Sano vs Koki Kitahara. Koki koppo kicks him and rolls him. Sano does a grounded choke. This goes to a draw but Sano advances via judge's decision.

We then go back to Fuyuki vs Sano. Fuyuki kicks his way out of a leglock. Fuyuki fisherman suplexes him for 2. Fuyuki la silla's him off the buckles for 2. Sano spin kicks him in the face. Sano tombstones him for 2. Sano hits spinning heel kicks and high kicks. Sano enzugiri's him after a slap combo. Fuyuki is down and the ref counts for the knockout. Sano wins via knockout.

Thoughts
: We didn't see a lot of this. Sano did mostly all kicks here. Fuyuki's la silla off the 2nd rope was something different.

One Night Tournament - Semi Finals -George Takano vs Shunji Takano

George slaps him and Shun slaps him back.

We cut to clips of Goro Tsurumi vs George Takano. Goro low blows him. Goro goes for a 2nd rope backdrop and George bodypresses him and pins him.

We go back to the Takano vs Takano match. Shun ropebreaks out of a half-crab then George puts it back on. Shun boots him in the face  then kicks him while laying on the mat. George sentons him. Shun suplexes him for 2.

George germans Shun for 2. George dropkicks him off the buckles then crabs him. Shun submits.

Thoughts: We didn't see much of it. They were not taking it easy with each other and I liked some of the fighting spirit shown here.

We see clips from the SWS introduction press conference. We see the wrestlers working out and greeting fans.

George Takano vs Naoki Sano

Sano kind of ddt's him and back rolls into a guillotine. GT fujiwara armbars him. GT powerbombs him for 2 then suplexes him. Sano trips him, kneels on his back and chinlocks him. Sano clubs on him then surfboards him. Sano does a grounded choke and GT ropebreaks. Sano misses a spinning heel kick then GT spinning heel kicks him. GT germans him for 2.

Sano slaps and powerbombs GT for 2. GT enzugiri's him and armbars him. Sano high kicks him, leg kicks him and stomps him on the mat. Sano dropkicks him. GT does a pin off an abdominal stretch. George reverse surfboards him.

GT hits some shots. Sano slaps and palm strikes him down. Sano backdrops him. GT backrolls him for a 2 count. Sano then gets a 2 count on him. GT tiger suplexes him for 2. GT hits a tombstone then top rope splashes him and wins.

Thoughts: Maybe it wasn't great but they did a decent job of making this look like a real fight. They both took some stiff bumps here and it was definitely hard fought. GT's comeback at the end was nice and what we got wasn't bad.

Genichiro Tenyru & Takashi Ishikawa vs. Yoshiaki Yatsu & Isao Takagi

We join this in progress. Yatsu hits GT with an open chair and bangs GT's head off a row of chairs. GT is busted open. Isao top rope clubs GT in the head. Iso suplexes him for 2. GT hits a big powerbomb.

Yatsu suplexes GT then top rope double axe handles him for 2. Isao hits headbutts on GT. TI gets in and slap flurries Isao. He hits a stiff lariat. TI pulls on his legs and Yatsu breaks it up. Yatsu hits a stiff piledriver on TI for 2.

Yatsu does a neat suplex on TI. Isao ddt's TI for 2 then armbars him. Yatsu headbutts TI several times and flurries him. Yatsu bulldogs him for 2. TI spinning heel kicks him in the corner. GT comes in and corner lariats Yatsu. GT hits a normal lariat then slams him. GT top rope back elbow drops him for 1.

GT chops Yatsu then Isao germans GT. Iso stomps GT. GT hits Kawada kicks to the head and punts his head. Isao's nose is busted open. TI stomps Isao then 2nd rope knee drops him. Tenryu kicks Isao around more. GT hits more Kawada kicks then stomps him. GT punts Isao in the back. TI goes up top and drives his knee into Isao's back. TI hits kicks to the back. GT hits Kawada kicks on Isao and stomps him.

GT hits more kicks to the face. TI hits a hard lariat on Isao. GT corner lariats Isao then hits more boots to the face. Yatsu goes after GT and slams a row of chairs on him. TI and Yatsu fight outside. Isao baseball slides GT.

Isao running lariats GT. GT knees Isao out of the corner. TI spinning heel kicks Isao in the corner. GT chops and boots Isao in the corner. Isao's covering up and GT's making him put his hands down. Yatsu backs off GT and the ref knockdown counts Isao. GT hits more kicks to the head. GT chops him down. GT and TI then win by ref stoppage.

Thoughts: Isao should have been nicknamed "Soccer Ball Head" after this. Tenryu just relentlessly and brutally kicked him over and over and over again. Isao legit took a serious whooping here and ended up turning face over it. This was joined in progress but what we got was good. Everyone was fired up and the crowd was pretty hot. These guys were so much better than the wrestlers are today. I wouldn't consider it a classic but it was good, realistic and it was stuff like this that made people love Japanese wrestling so much.

Overall thoughts: I wouldn't recommend it. Everything is clipped. Them cutting to other matches while matches were going on was super confusing and the payoff wasn't really worth the effort. The big highlights here were Kendo Nagasaki beating the crap out of Shunji Takano then Tenryu turning Isao Takagi's head into a soccer ball in the main event. The main was good and worth seeing. I also liked the commentary here as it was partially in English. This was a bit of rough watch otherwise though and if you are looking for a sample of what SWS was about, this isn't it. I'd give this a 4 out of 10, and it wasn't the wrestling that brought it down, just the awful formatting of the show.
