AEW Dynamite 1/28/2026

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2026/01/aew-dynamite-1212026.html

We are in Austin, TX. Taz, Excalibur and Tony Schiavone are on commentary.

Kenny Omega vs Rocky Romero

RR hits KO as the bell rings then stomps him in the corner. KO hits punches in the corner. KO flying back elbows him and throws him out. KO slingshot plancha's him outside. KO over the back fameassers her and kicks him in the ribs. KO pushes him down. RR slides out. RR pushes the ref in KO's way then kicks him.

RR pounds on KO. RR standing shiranui's him. RR hits corner lariats and KO facekicks him. RR poses then takes a running knee from behind. KO dragon suplexes him. KO pumping knees him on the ropes. KO hits an OWA and wins.

Thoughts: It was a shorter one than I expected with KO basically squashing RR. KO won though as expected. It was fine.

Tony Schiavone, with neon green shoes and a tie, interviews KO in the ring. Tony talks about some wacky qualification process involving KO and the title. KO says he hasn't felt this good in years. He says this is where the best are supposed to wrestle. He says he wouldn't be here if he didn't think he couldn't challenge for the title. He says this is just business and he will become champ.

Adam Page comes out. He says he'd rather fight beside him than against him. Page says Kenny won't be the next champ. Page says he will be the next champ.

Swerve Strickland comes out with Nana. Swerve says he came back to AEW for a world title and hasn't been pinned or defeated. He says he has just as much right to the title as they do. He says he will get the title and doesn't care who he has to stomp out, ravage and go through to get what he wants. He says it can be against anybody.

Kenny says he feels like Swerve has animosity for him and says Swerve seems to be looking for a fight. Swerve says "more than you know".

Don Callis interrupts. Don tells Swerve to enjoy being undefeated as he doesn't have much longer until Andrade ends his streak tonight. Don says when Andrade beats Swerve, he's coming for him. He says he has something special in mind for Page. Don says they need to understand that his family runs this show.

Kenny says Don should have maybe been worrying about himself. Kenny then goes to chase him.

Kris, Harley and Willow do a video on Thekla. Harley says Thek will suffer shock syndrome from Kris. Kris tells Thek to live short and die. Willow says they will put their tag titles on the line on Saturday if Thek's partners stay out of the match.

AEW Continental Title Eliminator Match - Jon Moxley vs Ace Austin

Mox facekicks him to start and chops him in the corner. Mox hits mounted corner punches on Ace. Ace hits shots to the gut and is headbutted. Ace side headlock takeovers him. Ace then crucifixes him for 2. Ace chops him and Mox no sells it.

They trade chops, leg kicks and forearms. Mox flips Ace to the apron. Ace backrolls into an armdrag. Ace dropkicks Mox. Ace handstands on the apron and kicks Mox from the apron.

We go to PiP break and return. Ace is pushed into the buckles. Mox hits corner spears. Ace sits up top. Mox chops and back rakes him there. Mox 2nd rope superplexes him down. Mox corner lariats him. Ace then lariats him down. Ace russian legsweeps him and legdrops him. Ace flying corner lariats him.

Ace misses a helicopter kick and Mox lariats him. Mox sunset flips him for 2 then gets another 2 count on him. They trade forearms. Ace spinning high kicks him. Ace rams Mox's head into the mat for 2.

They trade shots. Mox misses a corner charge and Ace helicopter kicks him for 2. Ace jumps at him and is hit with cutter. Mox hits a high angle death rider ddt and wins.

Thoughts: It was alright and surprisingly, mostly just them trading strikes. There was a bit of a styles clash here and this is what they came up with to deal with it. Mox won as expected.

Konosuke Takeshita comes down. He gets in Mox's face and points at the Continental Title. Mox has some words for him. Jake Doyle and Mark Davis then jump Mox from behind and Jake drops him with a forearm.

AEW TNT Title - Mark Briscoe (c) vs El Clon

They lock up. Clon side headlocks him. Clon headflips and side headlocks him. Clon rolls over his back then back elbows him for 1. Clon chops him. Mark hits a big punch. Mark pulls Clon out and chops him. Mark headbutts him outside. Mark tries to jump off a chair but Clon tries to throw it at him.

Clon does headflips and Mark lariats him. Mark dropkicks him through the ropes then blockbusters him from on the floor. Clon puts Mark's head underneath the ring skirt and dropkicks him. Clon facekicks him outside.

We go to PiP break and return. Clon corner lariats him then enzugiri's him in the corner. Clon sits up top and is punched down to the apron. Mark tope con hilos him through the ropes. Mark hits a jay driller. Clon no sells it and spin kicks him in the gut. Clon pele kicks him. Clon step up asai moonsaults him outside. Clon hits a top rope double stomp. Clon step up enzugiri's him from behind. Mark rolls him up and pins him.

Thoughts
: I didn't like the jay driller being no sold. That was bogus. I thought the finish didn't quite fit either. Clon had some creative flying here and Jay did his usual spots. I thought it could have been a little better and wasn't the biggest fan of this.

Mark gets on the mic after. He says he's reigning and defending. He says we will be back in Texas on Saturday and he likes the concept of the open challenge. He says nobody from The Don Callis Family though as he's tired of them. He says anyone else can challenge though. The lights go out. Tomasso Ciampa then appears on the ramp, fresh out of WWE.

They stare each other down. Ciampa says he's coming for Mark's TNT Title. Ciampa then kisses him.

Thoughts: Yet another new AEW signee. I honestly question whether his body can handle an AEW run with how many injuries he has had.

Kyle Fletcher and Kazuchika Okada are interviewed. Okada says he needs to say something to him. He says he wasn't thinking when he took the screwdriver, he just wanted to win. He says he wanted to face him in the finals and didn't mean to hurt him. He says he wanted him to be here so he could say he was sorry. Kyle says he was mad at him after World's End but he accepts his apology. They shake hands and Kyle leaves.

MJF comes out to talk. He asks Taz why they are working in a dump like this and says this place sucks. Brody King comes out. MJF says King's as deaf as he is big and stupid. King comes on the apron. MJF asks if they will speak like men. MJF says he told him he has to beat someone that matters to get a title shot.

He says he's following him around like a lost puppy like he did with Malakai Black. He says then he started following around Buddy Matthews. He asks how his ankle is and says he doesn't care. He says he now follows around a complete loser name Bandido. He says maybe King should follow him around. MJF says he'll pay him and can use a guy like him. MJF says they will have to fix the aesthetic. He says he's a liberal man that looks like a nazi.

MJF says King just has a dream of beating him. He says to be champ, you have to be a leader like him. He says he's nothing more than a follower.

King says he doesn't need to follow anyone. He says what MJF described was friends. He says that's something MJF never had. He says he's right that he has never beaten anyone. He says him and Tony Khan decided that he should beat him to get a title shot. King says they have an eliminator match next week. He says when he beats him, he will earn a title shot for Australia, where he will become the leader this company needs.

The Young Bucks do a video. They say a little humility has helped them and says power trips sometimes take you nowhere. They say it's time to go back to the tassels and superkick parties. They say the tag division is all on notice and it starts in Las Vegas. They say they are invited to a superkick party then superkick the camera.

AEW Women's Title - Kris Statlander (c) vs Thekla

Kris suplexes her on the floor. Kris catapults her into the steps. Kris poses on the apron and Thek facekicks her down. Thek double stomps her back off the apron. We go to PiP break and return.

Thek hanging headscissors her over the top rope. Kris reverse alabama slams her into the top buckle. Kris corner lariats her. Kris running knees her in the corner then hits a spinning falcon arrow for 2.

Kris running lariats her. Kris is stuck up top and Thek spider superplexes her. Thek then dives on her off the buckles outside. Thek spears her. Thek spits on her. Thek christo's her. Thek then curbstomps her for 2.

Kris superkicks her and Thek rolls her up for 2. Thek ducks a spinning lariat. Kris gutwrench powerbombs her. Kris hits a one-legged package tombstone to win.

Thoughts: It was just an average match for the most part and wasn't super exciting. Thek could have used the win here to gain some credibility but it didn't happen.

Harley and Willow pose with Kris after. Bayne and Penelope Ford stare at them from the stage.

Don Callis does a promo with Kyle and Takeshita. Don says they need to mobilize their resources and bring gold home. He says Andrade will be closer to the gold tonight when he beat Swerve. Don says the only thing keeping KT from bringing the Continental Title home is to forgive Okada. He says Kyle is synonymous with the TNT Title. He says Kyle is waiting on Mark. He says Davis and Doyle are going to squash FTR. KT asks if Kyle forgives Okada then walks away in disappointment.

Ricochet has the camera in the back. He says we were supposed to hear from Jack Perry but he's pre-occupied. We see The Demand holding Jack. Jack fights back and is thrown into a shopping card. Ric pretends to interview him. Jack is thrown into a hockey board and then it falls on him. Jack then takes a t-gimmick through a table and Ric says this is what happens when you try to take what is his.

AEW Tag Titles - FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) (c) vs Jake Doyle and Mark Davis

Big Stoke joins commentary and is in a wheelchair.

Dax chops MD. MD slams and sentons him. MD is pulled over the top. JD goes out. Cash tries to tope them but is caught and thrown into Dax. We go to PiP break and return.

Dax and MD hold hands and chop each other. Dax hits short arm lariats. MD enzugiri's him. MD running lariats him. JD jumps up and Cash bodyblocks him. JD bodyblocks Cash. JD's head is busted open and Dax's chest is busted open. JD and MD hit corner splashes on FTR. MD is crotched up top. Dax top rope backdrops him. Cash top rope splashes MD and they get a 2 count on him. MD lariats Cash over the top. He sleepers Dax. The Death Riders come out. Mox hits MD with a title belt. MD is hit with a big rig and is pinned.

Thoughts: It wasn't quite the classic I had hoped for. They didn't get that much time to do anything great here and we had a dirty finish. AEW is where the big boys lay and the big boys lost as expected here. I would have liked to have seen this go longer as it was going okay.

Orange Cassidy is interviewed. He says Wheeler Yuta has changed a lot over 5 years and makes fun of his look. Yuta comes in and asks if they are resorting to this. Shafir comes in and grabs OC. Toni Storm then comes in and yells at Shafir. Shafir asks if she needs more milk or if her girlfriend needs more flowers. Toni says they will be in deep sh!t when they meet. Toni and OC then dance away as officials break it up.

Swerve Strickland vs Andrade El Idolo

Idolo side headlocks him then shoulders him over. They shove each other and trade forearms. They flying headscissors each other and stand off. SS corner euros him. SS gets on the 2nd rope and Idolo poses at him from the mat.

They both get on the 2nd rope and SS springboard hurricanrana's him down. SS misses a fosbury flop outside and SS is sent into the steps. Idolo then I think takes the phone form the same girl as last week. The girl gives him paper with her number on it.

We go to PiP break and return. Idolo springboard triangle tornillo's him outside. Idolo hits a top rope moonsault into a standing moonsault for 2. SS hits forearms and Idolo facekicks him.

SS death valley drivers him on the apron. Idolo back body drops him on the rail top but crotches himself in the process in a funny moment. They trade forearms inside. SS spinning back elbows him then Idolo spinning back elbows him for 2. SS flying kicks him for 2. Idolo 2nd rope poisonrana's him. Idolo corner meteora's him for 2. SS ddt's him for 2. SS jack knifes him for 2. Idolo rolls him up for 2. SS house call kicks him. Idolo low blows him and hits a double underhook twisting drop. Idolo pins him.

Thoughts: It was a lose-lose as neither guy really needed to drop this one. Swerve was the unlucky lose here. I didn't care for this match. They did a bunch of big moves and didn't sell them and there was no great story. Idolo accidentally crotching himself on the rail was funny.

MJF is interviewed in the back about facing Brody King. He says King has another thing coming if he thinks he can beat him. Kenny Omega comes up to MJF. He says one more week and one more win then he will see him for the title. He offers a handshake and MJF walks away.

Idolo walks up to MJF. He says he wants the title. MJF then exits the arena. He tries to go into a car but Adam Page close the door on him. MJF then tells his driver to drive the car.

Overall thoughts:
They had more matches than they really had time here and 2 of the title matches weren't as good as they should have been due to it. I think they got the point over well on this show that multiple people are coming for MJF. They also continued to push the Takeshita/Okada issues, but only briefly brought up The Death Riders/Don Callis Family feud. Tomasso Ciampa has signed with AEW and we'll see where that goes. I would give this a 6 out of 10 as they mostly had the right idea here and had a lot of their bigger stars involved in this. The show was alright but it's just surprising that multiple matches didn't get a lot of time on an AEW show.
