AEW Dynamite 2/21/2024
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/02/aew-dynamite-2142024.html
FTR vs Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli)
Mox hits knees on Cash then CC boots and euros him. Mo hits chops on Dax then Dax back body drops him. Dax suplexes him. Mox gets out of a cash suplex then goes for a choke, but Cash throws him out. They butt heads and trade forearms. Cash comes off the top and hits a double clothesline on the BCC. CC euros Dax outside then Mox topes Dax outside. CC pushes Mox into the steps.
Mox is double teamed in the corner. Dax abdominal stretches Mox then Cash low dropkicks him. Mox is catapulted into the bottom rope. Mox and Dax trade then Mox lariats him. CC hits a euro flurry on Dax then CC euros him. CC double backdrops both FTR members.
Dax back body drops CC then Dax takes a spike piledriver on the floor. We go to PiP break and return. CC chinlocks Dax then CC is thrown into the post. Cash hits punches on Mox and dropkicks CC. Cash flying lariats CC then goes up and over into a roll-up on Mox. Cash brainbusters Mox. The BCC goes for a double suplex but it is broken up.
Mox takes a powerbomb + lariat combo for 2. Dax avoids a doomsday device attempt then Mox takes a powerplex. CC giant swings Dax then Mox hits downward elbows on Dax. Both of FTR are in chokes and they break it up. Dax sharpshooters Mox while CC sharpshooters Cash. They slap each other while keeping the holds on then let go and slap each other. Dax piledrivers CC. FTR go for the shatter machine and the time limit expires.
They never call the time in AEW, so when they started announcing it, we knew they were likely going to a draw. I don't love opening matches being longer. It was what you would expect though with a lot of decent brawling between the two teams. I do think the spike piledriver on the floor was too much to survive though. As usual, Mox got busted open here but not too badly.
They want to keep fighting after and security and Butcher break it up. They do continue the fight some though.
Orange Cassidy and Doc Sampson are interviewed by Renee. Renee runs down all the abuse OC and Best Friends have taken lately. Doc says he is cleared to compete and OC says he will wrestle if cleared.
FTR are interviewed. Dax said they would have won with 5-10 more seconds. Dax suggests a match at Revolution with the BCC. They then walk in held back by refs and they all argue.
Orange Cassidy vs Mike Bennett
OC beats up The Kingdom on the ramp and throws Mike in. Mike forearms him over and hits chops. OC is sent hard into the buckles then CC suplexes him. OC cutters him out of the suplex then OC ddt's him.
Roderick Strong comes down and gets on the apron. The ref kicks him out then Mike punches him in the nuts. Mike piledrivers him for 2. OC goes out as we go to PiP break. We return and Mike is still in control. Mike gets on commentary during the match and says he can do it better than anyone else. OC then topes him twice.
Mike death valley drivers him on the floor. OC hits an orange punch then Mike gotch-style piledrivers him on the floor. OC superkicks him then is forearmed down. OC beach breaks him and wins it.
There wasn't any comedy here so it was more tolerable than the usual OC match. We knew the result was never in doubt here. I didn't think it was that bad though they did do too much.
Taven and Strong beat down OC after. Jake Hager then comes out to make the save in a surprise. Best Friends is probably good for Hager as he seems to do best in background roles.
Renee interviews Angelo Parker and asks if he is excited to go out with Ruby. Ruby then comes in. A car shows up behind them and Ruby asks if that's the one they are going in. Parker says they are going in a lyft. Ric Flair then comes out of it.
Renee interviews Ric Flair. He says he's disappointed about not being a bigger part of the picture with Sting's retirement. He said he's just going to explore some options. Flair then goes up to The Young Bucks.
Tony Schiavone interviews Daniel Garcia. He said him and Adam Copeland are contenders for the TNT Title and he says Adam is on the shelf. Tony said it will be Garcia vs Christian at Revolution for the TNT Title. The crowd chants "you deserve it" and he said he feels like he doesn't sometimes. He said he was told he would be great and said he lost his confidence a few months ago. He said he knew 3 seconds is all he needed and got his 3 seconds in the Continental Classic. He said when he got down, the crowd picked him back up and danced with him. He said he would have made Adam tap out if the match went longer. He said he will see him again, but he will be holding the TNT Title then. He says he will take down Christian at Revolution then Christian comes out.
Christian says Adam Copeland won't have another chance ever at his TNT Title. He said Daniel has been on a good run and while he'd like to fight him, it shouldn't happen at Revolution. He said he doesn't think he's ready. He said he likes his dance moves but he wants to be the most dominant TNT champ of all time.
He said Garcia had a dark child and talks about his parents and said his father is dead. He said he was a loser alcoholic and wants to help. He said he wants to be Garcia's father, not his opponent. Garcia said he will put him in the ground right next to him. Nick Wayne goes after Garcia, Garcia handles him then Killswitch comes down. Matt Menard then nails Killswitch with a chair and Menard/Garcia square off with The Patriarchy.
Renee interviews Rob Van Dam, Adam Page and Hook. Page said there's room for opportunities for all of them tonight. Page talks about Swerve and said RVD can get revenge on him tonight. RVD kind of goes off track and Page said getting Swerve is our plan tonight and they end the interview soon after.
Toni Storm vs Sydni Winnell
Toni jumps on her at the bell. SW hits some forearms then Toni hits a Thesz press with punches. Toni corner splashes her and bulldogs her. Toni corner hip attacks her then hits a short piledriver. Toni ankle locks her and lets go of it to put on Deonna Purrazzo's venus di milo move. Toni taps her out.
It was just a short squash.
Deonna comes out before Toni leaves and they stare down.
Deonna Purrazzo vs Madison Rayne
They said this is Rayne's first match of the year. They announce ROH Supercard of Honor for 4/5/23. DP takes her down and headlock takeovers her. DP side headlocks her. MR takes her down and DP pump kicks her. DP baseball slides her and we go to PiP break. We return and MR hits a step up enzugiri. They then lariat each other down at the same time. DP hits lariats, a knee lift and a russian legsweep. Deonna hits forearms. MR botches and takes a flatliner on her head. DP then taps her out with Toni's ankle lock.
Hopefully Rayne is okay. This wasn't that good and had a major botch.
Toni comes down after with a shoe and is pump kicked. Toni then ankle locks her. Toni then puts on a pile of lipstick for some reason.
Darby Allin does a promo. He said when you are close to the end, you think about material objects and realize it doesn't mean much. He then shows a photo of Sting with his kids. He said the kids were the same age as The Bucks kids are now. Darby said all that matters at the end is family. Sting agrees and said no one has messed with his family during his career. He said that came to an end and said his father passed away recently. He said it makes him think of his own mortality. He said he felt invincible but time catches up with everyone. He said everything he is feeling will come with him to Revolution. He said The Bucks have a fight on their hands and have the fight of their life. This was much better than what we got last week with Darby and definitely helped out that program.
Tony goes to interview Wardlow. Wardlow tells him to get out and threatens him. He said he's been p!ssed off for a long time. He said he had thousands of people chanting his name 2 years ago and said he was the next big thing. He said the rocket strapped to his back has gone upside down. He said he's been screwed since then. He said you would think he would be champ a long time ago but hasn't gotten a chance. He said people should be fired and thrown in jail for it.
Wardlow talks about former AEW champs and said he choked out and beat Samoa Joe. He said that means he's the best in the world and better than Joe. He said he is the uncrowned king of AEW and said it's time he starts eating like one. He said he is done being fed scraps. He said he is everything a world champ should be. He said this is war.
We've seen this before and Wardlow seems to always end up in the same place at the end. Let me know when he does something of note other than squashing jobbers.
We see The Bang Bang Scissor Gang talking from Rampage. The Gunn Family argue amongst themselves. Jay says he likes the idea of Billy Gunn joining The Collision Cowboys and said it would be Jay, Colten and Billy teaming up on Collision. Bowens says the BBSG runs the world no matter which combo. This was a confusing mess.
They say Will Osperay will be at All In London and said he will fight Konosuke Takeshita at Revolution.
We are then told Wardlow is competing at Meat Madness, and the announcers don't know what that is.
The Don Callis Family is interviewed. Don is asked about Ospreay vs Takeshita. He says win or lose, they will still both be Family members. He said people thought Will would leave the UK with Tony, but they are picking him up. Don says Hobbs will be in this meat madness match and says he has a score to settle with Sammy Guevara.
Samoa Joe, Brian Cage and Swerve Strickland vs Adam Page, Rob Van Dam and Hook
I don't remember this one being explained. Why would Joe team with Swerve? Hook flying lariats Joe over early. Joe hits punches in the corner. RVD hits shots on Cage then trips him. RVD takes a backbreaker with a sliding lariat from Swerve. RVD monkey flips Swerve. Page goes after Swerve and their partners separate them.
We go to PiP break and return. Joe is beating up on Hook in the corner. Cage suplexes Hook. RVD gets in and hits kicks on his opponents. RVD spinning high kicks Swerve then slingshot legdrops him over the apron. RVD top rope crossbodies Cage then dropkicks Joe off the apron. RVD hits a rolling thunder on Swerve then spinning heel kicks Cage.
RVD top rope frogsplashes Cage for 2. Swerve face kicks Page off the apron. RVD takes corner attacks and an enzugiri. We go to break and return. RVD springboard kicks Joe. Page gets in and goes after Swerve, who is on the apron. Cage pops-up Page and Page hurricanrana's him. Page misses a plancha on Swerve then kicks Swerve as he rolls at him.
Page comes off the top and is caught by Cage. Page death valley drivers Cage for 2. Joe running face kicks Page then Hook lariats Joe. Swerve rolls Hook into a brainbuster then RVD springboard kicks Swerve. Cage does a pumphandle bomb on RVD. Cage superplexes Page and Hook germans Cage while he does it.
Page isn't getting up then Hook puts redrum on Cage. Hook puts redrum on Swerve. Cage pop-up powerbombs Hook and Page buckshot lariats Cage. Swerve, Joe and Page stare down. Swerve backbreakers Page and holds him for a Joe facekick. Joe topes Page.
Swerve pump kicks Joe on accident then Page powerbombs Swerve through the commentary table. Joe powerslams Page then RVD plancha's Cage. Joe hits punches on RVD then Hook northern lights suplexes Joe. RVD goes up top and is pushed over by Cage. Cage spinning lariats Hook then Joe chokes RVD. Joe chokes out RVD for the win.
It was an okay but main but nothing too special and definitely a throwaway. Joe and Swerve was a weird team-up here but three-way feuds limit what you can do. There were rumors that Page got hurt here but nobody knows as of this time.
Overall thoughts: It felt like a nothing show for the most part. They are ready to do the PPV but they still have more content to put out.
Someone on Twitter ran the address that Christian gave for Daniel Garcia's mother through google earth. It's actually the address to a graveyard!
