AEW Dynamite 8/17/2022

CM Punk came out do a promo. Punk offers to Adam Page the rematch he wanted right now. Punk rips him for not showing up and says that's not "cowboy sh!t, that's coward sh!t". He then invites anyone to come down who has an issue with the champ. He talks about Mox and says he is not #1 as Punk is the champ. He said Mox has always been #2 and he has always had his number. He said Mox is the 3rd best guy in his own group and said that seems to be a reoccurring theme in his career.
He said Eddie Kingston isn't the best Eddie or Kingston he has been on the roster with. He said he wants to put his belt up against Mox's at All Out. Mox comes out and Punk does snow angles while he waits. Mox says neither his belt or Punk's belt means anything until they figure out who the best is, which buried both belts. Punk said Mox is the heart and soul of AEW, but he is the dollars and cents. Mox challenged him and they brawled until it was broken up. Some of this was good, but Page was buried for no reason and they buried the titles.
Powerhouse Hobbs was interviewed. He said he turned on Ricky Starks as he said he was okay with losing and Hobbs said he wasn't. He also said he ended up backing up a lot of his talk for him and is here to break necks.
2/3 Falls - Bryan Danielson vs Daniel Garcia
1st Fall - Bryan works a leglock early and we go to PiP break pretty early as well. We return with Bryan hitting a kick flurry and flying kicking him. Bryan hurricanrana's him off the top but Garcia rolls through and they trade chops. Garcia butterfly suplexes him into an armbar. Bryan does a backdrop on him. Bryan misses a knee off the apron and takes a backdrop on the floor.
Garcia does Bryan style elbow on him then Bryan triangles him. Garcia lifts him into a piledriver. Garcia then sits on his back and grabs the arm for a dragon sleeper. The ref calls off the fall saying Bryan is out.
2nd Fall - Garcia stomps on him in the corner. Garcia hits chops and a corner dropkick as we go to break. We return from break and are told Garcia hit a ddt on the conrete outside on him and we see Garcia stomping his head. Bryan is bleeding and Garcia goes for another dragon sleeper but Bryan rolls him up and takes the fall.
3rd Fall - Garcia is hung in tree of woe and kicked. Bryan spider german suplexes him then top rope dropkicks him. Bryan topes him throug hthe ropes then hits kicks. Bryan and Garcia pull each other into the post with their hands locked. We go another break. We return with Garcia tying up Bryan's legs and laying on him then Bryan rolling him into a crossface. Garcia flying dropkicks him then flying knees him for 2. They trade forearms and Bryan pounds on him with forearms. Garcia reverse curbstomps him then Bryan does it to him. Bryan hits an elbow flurry then crossfaces him and wins it.
It went longer than it needed to and it was okay but not a classic.
Jericho comes down to stomp on Bryan after and Garcia stops it. Garcia slaps Jericho's hand away and Jericho warns him.
Private Party and Swerve/Lee are interviewed. One of PP brags about being the #5 ranked team. Swerve isn't impressed and said they could learn a thing or two. Kassidy says Lee embarrassed him once and not again. Kassidy said they are taking the titles back to New York and Lee gives him gum for his bad breath.
Tony Nese vs ?
Jon Moxley nails Nese from behind and takes the mic. He calls out CM Punk and says lets unify the belts now. Punk comes out and security stops him then Mox runs at them to get to Punk. Claudio also comes out to break it up.
The JAS is interviewed. Tony asks about what happened with Garcia. Jericho says he is giving Garcia a pass. He said he needs to know where his loyalties are and said he will ask him man to man whose side is he on. Ricky Steamboat comes in and says Garcia doesn't need Jericho. He says Bryan Danielson is the better person to mention Garcia. Jericho tells Steamboat to stay out of his business. Steamboat goes to follow him as he leaves. Parker grabs him by the throat and yells at him and Steamboat chops him.
The Gunn Club vs The Varsity Blonds
The Gunns have very colorful tights on today. Austin running shoulders Griff then Colten hits a big lariat on him. Colten hits his colt 45 and wins in seconds in a burial.
Billy Gunn gets on the mic after. He says this is what they have to do. He says he is proud of them and says the greatest thing he has done in his career is worth with them. Stokeley Hathaway comes out and the Gunn's turn on their dad. The Acclaimed then come out and make the save. Bowens tells Gunn to scissor him daddy and they hug.
I hated this angle. The Gunn's turning on their dad wasn't believable.
Singh, Dutt and Lethal do a promo. Dutt says Wardlow can't do nothing and challenges Wardlow to a trios match with Wardlow/FTR vs them. Lethal says he doesn't respect anything FTR has done.
Death Triangle does a promo on Aussie Open and Will Osperay. Pac says he doesn't agree on Will being Britain's best. He said his unit is unstoppable and calls them his family. He said he will see them in Cleveland.
Jungle Boy does a promo. He said he wore some shirt last week and was told not to wear it anymore. He said he has tried to hit Christian with various things. Christian said he will do whatever it takes to get his hands on him and challenges him for All Out. Christian comes out and says no. He said Luchasaurus was suspended for headbutting an AEW official. He says he is proud of JB for being able to speak up for himself. Christian said they did some things they didn't mean after Jungle Boy lost the tag titles. Christian says he doesn't want to fight or wrestle him, he wants to fix this. He says he will take Jungle Boy to the promise land. He said they are family and he loves him. He said he is like a son to him and tells him to come back home. Jungle Boy takes him down and pounds on him. Christian goes outside, JB follows then Christian kicks him and throws him into the rails. JB sends Christian into the rails and bangs his head off the steps. JB then stomps his arm on the steps and the refs break it up. Well, I guess we don't need to see that match now since JB got his revenge here.
FTR and Wardlow do a promo. They agree to a trios match and says nobody messes with Pinnacle. Wardlow says everyone gets powerbombed no matter how big they are. Dax challenges Lethal to a singles match next week.
Toni Storm vs Kilynn King
King used to do a bunch of jobs on Dark. King throws her down and rolls her up. King side headlock takdowns her. King pumping knees her from the 2nd rope. Toni is outside and King rams her back into the apron and rails. We then go to PiP break. We return with Toni hitting forearms. King spin kicks her and pump kicks her. King then one-arm powerbombs her for 2. Toni germans her and running hip attacks her. Toni then hits a tornado ddt and another ddt for the win.
Toni should have been able to squash King, who is a nobody in AEW.
The Best Friends do a promo on The Trustbusters. They say they are real friends and not paid friends like The TB's. The Trustbusters respond but only get a line or two in.
We get clips of Zack Clayton challenging Hook for the FTW title as they run down upcoming cards. They announce Punk vs Moxley in a title unification match next week.
AEW Trios Title Tournament - Andrade El Idolo, Rush and Dragon Lee vs The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega
Don Callius comes out to the commentary booth for Kenny and Nakazawa is out there too. Kenny's wearing a shirt and something over his shoulder. One of the Bucks walks the buckles and armdrags Lee. Lee then takes a bulldog + dropkick combo. A buck is popped up into a hurricanrana. Kenny springboard double axe handles Lee's arm and Kenny hits corner punches. Kenny rolling fireman's carry slams Lee then falls down. The Bucks then trip Lee up into neckbreakers.
Jose the Assistant gets on the apron, distracts Omega and he gets beaten up from behind. We then go to PiP break and return to a Buck hitting a top rope crossbody. The same Buck then does a headscissors/armdrag top rope combo move. Matt hits a locomotion northern lights suplex then we have a 6 person suplex. One of the Bucks then walks up the buckles and does a corkscrew dive outside. Lee takes a backbreaker into a double stomp. A Buck takes a belly to belly overhead into the buckles. Andrade's team triple basement drops a Buck.
We go to a long PiP break. Rush kicks a Buck and does the tranquillo pose. Lee gets superkicked then is pushed into Andrade. Omega gets the hot tag in and hits moves on Andrade. Omega enzugiri's Rush and snap dragon suplexes all 3 opponents. The Bucks superkick Andrade and Rush out of a dosey-do and Lee takes a buckle bomb + double enzugiri's. Lee takes a triple superkick for 2. Kenny is tripped by Lee on a dive and throws him out. Jose trips Kenny and Kenny is dragged out. Kenny gets sat on the guard rail and Lee topes him into the front row with bot landing on the concrete. Lee hurricanrana's a Buck off the apron then Andrade moonsaults and then backflips on the landing onto Omega. Andrade ddt's Kenny for 2. Kenny v-triggers Lee against the ropes. Kenny hits a one winged angel on Lee and wins it.
It was what you would expect with a lot of big spots and dives. Kenny did not look 100% at all though some of it seemed to be worked. Lee not only lost on his debut, but he was the one pinned and Kenny's big return wasn't announced and therefore any money that could have been made off of it was thrown away.
Overall thoughts: The 2/3 falls match was decent though a little long and the main was all flips and spots. The ending to the show looked bad with Lee's mask falling off and I'm sure I buy the Gunn's turning on their dad. I didn't like Lee losing on his debut or Omega being the mystery partner and them not milking it on PPV
