WWC Superestrellas de la Lucha Libre 8/7/2022

WWC Superestrellas de la Lucha Libre 8/7/2022

The 49th Anniversary Show happened the night before. WWC didn't have any new footage for us on yesterday's show except for some promos and didn't even show an old match, so I didn't cover it. WWC doesn't have any new footage for us today either, but it does have some classic matches.

Abel Durant also isn't with us today, so Axel Cruz is our only announcer.

The Barbarian vs Konnan

Konnan rushes into the ring and is stomped and pounded on. Barb hiptosses him and hits corner chops then Konnan rolls into a clothesline. Konnan facebusters him and Barb takes a breath outside. Barb pulls him out of the ring and they fight on the baseball field. Konnan has his head hit off a speaker then is slammed on a stage. Barb then beats him with a lid to a box.

Konnan dropkicks the box lid into Barb and slams him on the stage. Barb kicks Konnan and he rolls off the stage then has his head slammed off a speaker. Barb hits him with some poles then puts him in a trapezius hold. Konnan gets out then is powerslammed for 2. Konnan hits some lariats then takes a big boot from Barb.

Barb grabs the title belt from the stage and Konnan's 2nd tries to take it from him. Barb gets in the ring and is dropkicked and rolled up for the win.

I think the title was supposed to hit Barb in the head when he was dropkicked but that didn't really happen. This was short but it was decent and we got a little brawling.

The Ninja Express (Mr. Pogo and Kendo Nagasaki) vs Bruiser Brody and Rocky Johnson

Brody and Kendo trade punches and kicks and Rocky hits Pogo with nunchuks. Pogo was not really fat here, so you know this is old. Kendo and Pogo get irish whipped into each other and go outside. A masked wrestler named El Profe is managing them. Pogo hits Rocky with some kicks to the gut then he eye rakes him with his foot. Pogo drops a fist off the 2nd rope on him then side kicks him.

Pogo and Rocky trade shots then Rocky does a boxing punch combo and knocks him over. Brody slams Pogo then Rocky uppercuts Pogo. Pogo hits chops on Rocky and Rocky rolls out of a wristlock and kicks him. Rocky backrolls to get up. Kendo hits kicks to Rocky's gut then Rocky mongolian chops him. Kendo does a big sell for a Brody chop then fires away on him with shots. Kendo throws Brody out.

Brody fights off a 1v2 on the floor and Kendo is thrown into the rail. Pogo goes into the post. The heels regain control inside and Brody is held up for chops. Pogo misses a spin kick and takes a boot to the face. Rocky and Pogo trade shots and Pogo hits a bad spin kick. Kendo back body drops Rocky then armbars him. Kendo chokes Rocky with a stick, then Brody grabs the stick and hits him with it. Pogo gets hit with the stick too and Kendo takes around round of shots. Brody then swings at the ref and knocks him over while swinging wildly in the air. The heels get back in and Brody hits more stick shots as Rocky fires on Pogo. Pogo is held up for a stick shot from Brody and then the heels back off and that's it.

There were some bad strikes there, but I liked it. It felt like a wild and out of control fight, the pace was good and the crowd was into it. I'd much rather watch stuff like this than a lot of the "classics" nowadays.

Ray Gonzalez and Carlito vs Thunder and Lightning

They all trade punches to start and Thunder takes corner punches from Ray. Ray low blows Thunder. then Carlito topes Thunder. Ray heasdscissors Thunder and Carlito sends an opponent into the post. Carlio then flips off the top onto his opponents onto the baseball field. Lightning and Ray trade punches and Ray low blows him. Lightning takes punches from both opponents in the corner then Ray TKO's Lightning.

Carlito top rope moonsaults Lightning then legdrops him. Carlito hurricanrana's Lightning and dropkicks him out. Carlito and Thunder trade side headlocks then Ray knees Thunder from the apron as he runs the ropes. Ray hits some nice punches on Thunder and bangs his opponents heads together. Ray and Thunder trade more shots. Ray gets whipped into the buckles and does a big flip over the top to the floor. Ray pulls out powder then throws it at Barrabas (Thunder and Lightning manager at this time) then decks him.

Ray hits some kicks to the knee then jumps on Thunder's knee. Carlito legdrops Lightning's crotch and Carlito takes a slam. Thunder misses a big elbow and takes chops and punches from Carlito. Thunder goes out and Carlito tope con hilo's him. Lightning then nails Carlito outside on the field. Carlito then takes a 3D on the field. Carlito is suplexed in the ring for 2.

Carlito takes a powwerslam and we go to break. Lighting is still working over Carlito then slams him. Thunder stands on the back of Carlito's head over the bottom rope then Carlito takes a double back elbow for 2. Carlito and Lightning trade punches then Lightning slams him. Lightning goes up top and is crotched. Carlito chops him while he is up there then Carlito takes a doomsday device.

Carlito gets another chinlock put on him and Carlito flips off the top rope. Lightning lifts him for a flatliner then double underhook suplexes him. Lightning hits more punches then Carlito hits a rock bottom. Ray finally gets the hog tag in and hits punches on Lightning then back body drops him. Ray dropkicks him then bangs the heels heads together. Ray gets double spinebustered then Carlito comes in and hits T&L with a shovel. He accidentally hits Ray and gets nailed from behind by Thunder. Carlito takes a double chokeslam. Barrabas talks trash to Ray outside and tells him Carlito hit him with the shovel. Ray grabs the shovel as T&L hold up Carlito. Barrabas tells Ray to hit Carlito with it but Ray hits T&L instead. Carlito stunners one of T&L and wins it.

Barrabas and T&L all get on the apron after and take shovel shots.

This one went too long at close to 20 minutes. It wasn't bad with Carlito getting beaten up on most of the match and then eventually getting the hot tag to Ray, before the stuff with the shovel. They easily could have knocked 5 minutes off of this though. The announcer wasn't really sure who was Thunder and Lightning and I wasn't either after a while.

Overall thoughts: It's cool to see classic matches and all, but it accomplishes nothing. It buries the talent as the older guys come across better and it does nothing to build to shows or help people get over. The main event was decent, though long and the Brody tag was fun. Barb/Konnan was fine too.
