AJPW New Year Wars 2021: Day 3 1/23/2021

AJPW New Year Wars 2021: Day 3 1/23/2021

Jake Lee, Francesco Akira & TAJIRI vs. Purple Haze (Zeus, Izanagi & UTAMARO)

PH sprints to the ring. Akira double stomps Utamaru's arm. Zeus gorilla presses Akira and then hits some nice punches on him in the corner. Lee and Zeus have a nice forearm war. Lee nails Zeus in the gut hard with a knee. Akira flipdives on all of PH. Zeus ducks an Akira clothesline only to get a boot from Lee, then Akira hits some buzzsaw kicks. Akira flips out of a Zeus chokeslame and Zeus lariats him hard. Zeus then chokeslams him, for the win. This was too quick since you had 6 people in there and most of them got nothing in but it was fine.

Takao Omori, Carbell Ito & Alejandro vs. Evolution (Hikaru Sato & Dan Tamura) & Rambo Kawamura

The finish

Rambo is crawling into the ring with full Rambo gear on and a toy gun. Carbell hits a slingblade early. Rambo goes after Ale with a knife and Ale hits Dan with a missile dropkick. Ale then flip dives on everyone. Carbell dove from the top on everyone.

Rambo lost his bandana after a punch combo. Ale did a nice springboard dropkick from the 2nd rope. Omori came in and spinning heel kicked Sato then full nelson bombed him. Sato then armbarred him, but it was broken up.

Omori hit a stiff piledriver on Sato for 2 then takes a triple team. Sato hits a slow waterwheel drop on Omori and tries to armbar him again. Sato then grabbed the leg with it and tapped Omori in another short one with too many people in it to be worthwhile.

Twin Towers (Shuji Ishikawa & Kohei Sato) & Ryuki Honda vs. Yoshitatsu Kingdom (Yoshitatsu & Chikara) & Ryoji Sai

Honda and Yoshi trade elbows and Honda hits a few good ones, but takes a knee. Chikara comes in with machine gun chops on Dan and tags out to Sai who hits some nice kicks on Dan. Then Dan came back with a spear. Sato and Sai then exchanged some stiff kicks and Sai suplexed him. Sato took a corner train of moves then got double kicks from Yoshi and Sai. Chikara came off the top with a headchop. Sai then nailed Chikara with a forearm.

The Towers hit a double knee to Chikara then double forearms. Sato then drilled him with a piledriver for the win in yet again, another quick one. Pretty much everyone got one segment in and that was it.

Yoshitatsu slapped Chikara after then patted him on the head, yelling "WE CAN DO IT" into the mic.

NEXTREAM (Kento Miyahara, Yuma Aoyagi, Atsuki Aoyagi & RISING Hayato) vs. Enfants Terribles (Koji Doi, Kuma Arashi, Hokuto Omori & Yusuke Kodama)

Everyone brawls before the bell hits. Hayato does a 2nd rope springboard turnaround dropkick on Kuma. He tries to dive on him but Kuma slams him to the ground. Kento puts his belts back on outside around his neck and Kodama does a slingshot senton on Hayato.

Hayato gets triple teamed in the corner and gets his leg put up on both ropes, then Doi sticks his boot in his crotch. Hayato hits a high single leg dropkick on him and Kento comes in with dropkicks on Doi.

Yuma and Kento do a knee/boot combo to a kneeling Doi then Doi comes around with a spinning forearm on Kento. Omori does a nice reverse STO on Aoyagi and then totally misses an axe kick. Omori levels Kento with a forearm to knock him out of the ring. Kento's team clears out their opponents. Kento slaps Omori hard then Omori takes a bunch of moves in the corner along with another Kento slap. Omori grabs onto the ref during a usplex attempt and Kodama grabs the ref too.

Omori does a pop up low blow onto Aoyagi then Doi hits a big lariat on him. Kuma does a top rope senton onto Aoyagi. Omori then hits a fisherman's buster falcon arrow for the win and pounds on Aoyagi after. Like everything else this was really quick with most guys getting little in.

No DQ - GAORA TV Championship Match: Jun Kasai (c) vs. Black Menso~re

They duel chairs early and Menso topes Kasai. Menso grabs some kind of snake hose and chokes Jun with it and Jun gets out with a chair shot. Jun chairs Menso in the back then piledrivers him on the chair.

Jun puts a chair between the middle and top ropes and tries to spear Menso into it, but he moves and he takes a header through it. Menso puts chairs on Jun's chest and hits him with a broom/dust pan combo. Menso takes a low blow then is suplexed through a sitting chair.

Jun gets some skewer sticks out and puts them into Menso's head, but Menso is wearing a mask and it doesn't hurt. Jun then totally unmasks Menso and sticks the skewers into his head. Jun then does a sitout pedigree to him for 2. Jun does a splash from the top but Menso gets his knees up and only gets 2. Menso top rope double stomps him for 2.

Menso puts Jun on a table and goes up top but gets crotched, then Jun throws a chair at his head. Jun then hits a driver on him through the table but it is barely sold as Menso is up soon after. Jun then lariats him for 1. Jun then does his top rope splash for another 2.

Jun does a nasty double underhook piledriver for the win. The lack of selling the table spot and taking off Menso's mask for no real reason hurt this match for me, which would have been fine without those two things.

Jun then calls out Shuji Ishikawa and is seemingly going to be wrestle him for the title.

AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Championship Match: Koji Iwamoto (c) vs. Fuminori Abe

Abe flips out of a wristlock and double boots Koji. Abe kicks Koji in the back and that just makes him mad as they trade a round of forearms. Abe does it again and does a nice sell on a ddt. Koji then STF's him. Abe gets out and hits an STF then a double spin kick. Then he does a rolling legbar to Koji.

They trade slaps for forearms and Koji takes another dragon screw. Koji does a great judo throw on him, sending him half across the ring. Koji bridges him on the top rope and does a spinning neckbreaker to him from there. Abe gets rolled and turns it into an armbar.

They do a no-selling sequence that ends in a dropkick then Koji hits a lariat and Abe suplexes him. They trade slaps for forearms again and Abe baseball punches him then puts him in an octopus stretch. Abe hits another baseball punch then takes a hard uranage. Koji hits a hard german on him for 2. Abe does a snap hurricanrana and dives into judo throws. Koji does it again but gets reversed into a roll-up for 2.

Abe hits a headbutt and Koji comes back with a lariat then another hard judo throw for the win. I didn't really like this. They didn't sell much at all and there wasn't any real story. Abe's slaps also really disrupted some of the strike exchanges.

CIMA then did a promo and it looks like he will be taking on Koji in the future.

AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship Match: Suwama (c) vs. Shotaro Ashino

Ashino is wearing red which is rare for him. They grapple a bit early without anything really happening. They finally trade some strikes and Suwama drops him with a double chop. Suwama hits a high backdrop on him and boston crab's him. Suwama forearms him in the back and does some foot slaps, and Ashino catches one and dragon screws him. Ashino then wraps the ankle around the rope and the rail. Ashino works on the ankle more and clips him.

Suwama makes a comeback with a suplex and a flying shoulder. He lariats Ashino then belly to belly suplexes him. Ashino gets grabbed from behind and rolls it into a ankle lock. Suwama gets out and gives him one in return at 10 minutes. Ashino hits a release german but it isn't sold and Suwama gives him a german back.

Ashino euro uppercuts him and Suwama comes back with a lariat. Suwama fires up and does a flurry of back clubs then a few headbutts. Suwama puts Ashino's ankle lock on him again and Ashino rolls through to give Suwama one back. Suwama then puts it back on him only to get the ankle lock put on him again. Ashino grounds him with the ankle lock and Suwama really teases tapping but hits the ropes. Ashino german suplexes and Karelin's lifts him for 2 then hits another german.

Ashino moonsaults and hits nobody on a slow and hard moonsault. He lariats Suwama and Suwama blocks a second attempt with a double overhook suplex. Suwama hits his dropkick which Ashino really sells at 15 minutes, then Suwama backdrops him then hits a nastier backdrop. Ashino tries to power up but gets an enzugiri then takes another hard backdrop for 2. Suwama flips him on a lariat then does another hard backdrop for the win. This was good. Ashino worked the ankle throughout and Suwama gave it back to him then started hitting stiff moves for the win. It would have been better if Suwama sold the ankle a little more somehow. But in fairness, most of Suwama's moves don't involve any kind of flying so the sell wasn't so easy.

Kohei Sato comes out and it seems like he will challenge next.

Overall thoughts: It was just okay. The main was probably the best match on the show but not much else did it for me or really had the chance with them rushing through 4 matches in less than an hour.
