WWWF Championship Wrestling 10/29/1977
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2025/10/wwwf-championship-wrestling-10221977.html
Vince welcomes us to the show and runs down the card.
"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes vs "The Continental Nobleman" Joe Turco
DR throws shots and Joe complains. Joe clubs him and begs off from a punch. attempt. DR wristlocks him and elbows the arm. DR twists the arm with his legs. Joe chest clubs him. DR wristlocks and armlocks him. DR hits punches and back elbows him. DR elbow drops him and wins.
Thoughts: It was all arm work here before Dusty picked up the quick win. Joe was a big coward here and did a lot of begging. DR was thin here compared to his later years.
"Butcher" Paul Vachon vs Steve King
PV has Lou Albano with him. PV punches him then chops him down. PV kicks him in the chest then bites his face. King hits chest shots and PV chops him down. PV stomps him. Lou hits King from the outside.
PV ties up King in the ropes and chokes him. Albano then chokes King too and is caught doing it. PV foot chokes King then chokes him with his hands. King hits some shots and a knee. King dropkicks him and PV chest clubs him.
The ref pushes PV away. PV clubs King down then King hits shots to the body. Albano distracts the ref. PV hits King in the throat and chokes him with his shoulder strap. PV slams King then stomps him.
PV boots him then hits a splash to win.
Thoughts: Paul did mostly chokes and punches here. King got a little offense in but Paul would take control every time after he did. This went a little longer than it needed to at only 4 minutes.
Paul gets more shots in after.
Dewey Robertson vs. Sylvano Sousa
DR is the future Missing Link. DR goes for the takedown and throws him off a top wristlock. DR trips him off the hammerlock then ties his legs up.
DR takes him over by the arm and armlocks him. DR armdrags him into another armlock. DR throws him then full nelsons him. DR trips after Syl breaks it. DR side headlocks him then shoulders him over. DR hits a nice dropkick and armdrags him into an armlock.
DR beale throws him then does an abdominal stretch. Syl submits.
Thoughts: It was all squash here. Dewey was moving well and with his size and look, it's easy to see why he got pushed in various places. Dewey was almost playing with him at times.
Bob Backlund vs Pete Reeves
They lock up. Bob waistlocks him. Pete reverses it. Bob then slides out. Bob fireman's carry takeovers him. Pete top wristlocks him and Bob hammerlocks him. Pete ropebreaks.
Bob top wristlocks him. Bob does a nice takeover. Bob hammerlocks him and Pete ropebreaks. Bob armlocks him. Bob shoulders him over then Pete hiptosses him. Bob upkicks him and armdrags him again.
Pete eye rakes him then punches him. Bob leapfrogs him and dropkicks him. Bob then back body drops him. Pete its his with an atomic drop and pinned.
Thoughts: It was a little longer of a squash. Pete didn't get much in but various eye rakes and a punch of two. Bob was moving around well here.
Vince talks to The Grand Wizard. He doesn't buy that Arnold Skaalund is #1 in Manager of the Year voting. He says Arnold managed Bruno when he was champ but Bruno is now gone. Wiz says he guided Stan Stasiak to his title and has the current champ in Superstar Graham. He says he's the only manager to have 2 world champs. He says voting for Arnold is living in the past and is like voting for Roosevelt. Wiz says it's only simple pure logic that he is the manager of the year and generation. Wiz says Vince may think Bruno is the greatest champ of all time but he thinks Graham is and will be the greatest champ of any time.
Vince asks if Stan Stasiak wasn't much and Wiz says Stan was a great champ. Wiz says you don't get paid to play baseball if you strike out. He says you get paid for hitting home runs and winning games. He says he makes champs so he is the manager of the generation. Vince asks how Albano fits in. Wiz says Blassie and Albano are fine but he's a little bit better. Vince asks if it bothers him that he's trailing and he says it does. He says Arnold has never been accused of being too bright. Wiz asks the people to use their heads and says the answer will be The Grand Wizard. He says he has less respect for Arnold than any other manager.
Thoughts: The Wizard was good here and made a good argument for why he should be Manager of the Year.
"Pretty Boy" Larry Sharpe and "Dynamite" Jack Evans vs Johnny Rivera and Pete Austin
Jack got the win here with a top rope diving knee drop on Pete. The heels mostly stuck to the basics here. Rivera for a little offense in with some dropkicks. At most, Pete got a sunset flip in. Pete and Rivera lost as expected here and it wasn't that interesting.
"Chief" Jay Strongbow and "High Chief" Peter Maivia vs Moose Monroe and "Baron" Mikel Scicluna
Pete backs up Baron in the corner and gut punches him. He throws him and Baron goes to stall on the apron. Pete gets hyped up. Baron hits him in the throat with an object and drops him. Jay comes in and Baron hits shots on him.
Baron punches him out of the side headlock. Baron is tripped and Pete stomps him while he's down. Baron begs off and is popped up then dropped with a punch. Jay comes in and drops Moose with shots.
Jay gets distracted and Moose gets a shot in. Pete eye rakes Moose. Pete hits Moose with a foreign object that Baron brought in. Jay is then given the object. Jay and Baron criss-cross then Jay hits him with the object. Baron does a funny sell. Pete then does a weird dance.
Pete eye rakes Baron then falling punches him. Baron gets some shots in and both tag out. A fan tries to trip Moose. Moose chokes Jay with rope. Moose hits punches on Jay and Jay pumps up. Jay slides between the legs and tags out. Pete gets in. He drops Moose with a shot to the chin and crossbodies him for the win.
Thoughts: There weren't many moves here but they did well with virtually nothing. Baron did a great job of selling here and Moose did some nice bumping for his size as well. Maivia just absolutely oozes personality in everything he does and he makes even the simplest things seem cool. Jay kind of war danced his way through this match. It was entertaining and the crowd loved it.
Vince says we will have the conclusion of the Manager of the Year contest in the upcoming week and closes the show.
Overall thoughts: It was all squashes here as usual. Dewey Robertson didn't look too bad in his. The Grand Wizard cut a nice promo on why he should be the manager of the year. The main was the best thing on here with the heels bumping well and Peter Maivia looking like the coolest dude in town. There's nothing you really need to see here but the main was fun. It was an average show.
