WWF Shotgun Saturday Night 1/3/1998

WWF Shotgun Saturday Night 1/3/1998

Michael Cole and Kevin Kelly re on commentary. Tonight has the SSN debut of Jeff Jarrett.

Big Van Vader vs Julio Sanchez

They lock up and JS is shoved in the corner. Vader shoves him down then bodyblocks him. Vader hits bolo punches then does a nasty razor's edge. Vader hits a big splash then slams him. Vader hits a vader bomb but doesn't pin him. Vader then pins him with a moonsault.

Thoughts: It was all squash here with vader looking big and bad. JS looked like he was praying when he was getting ready to take the razor's edge.

The slam of the week was Owen Hart getting hit with a kendo stick likely by Triple H when trying to put Shawn Michaels in a sharpshooter.

Steve Blackman vs Jimmy Cicero

SB goes for kicks and JC backs off in the corner. JC side headlocks him then shoulders him over. SB then chops him down. JC clubs on him then SB backbreakers him. SB stomps and elbows his back. SB atomic drops him.

SB hits punches in the corner and JC crossbodies him for 2. SB pump kicks him. SB standing dropkicks him. SB bends over, gets kicked then dropkicked. SB swats a dropkick away then slams him. SB misses an elbow drop. SB hits a nice german and rolls him into a double armlock. SB then submits him.

Thoughts: SB won as expected here. It wasn't that interesting. SB wasn't a great worker and the two didn't match up that well.

WWF Slam Jam

Dok Hendrix hypes up a house show with Austin and Cactus Jack vs Farooq and The Rock and The New Age Outlaws vs The Legion of Doom. The Outlaws do a promo. Billy said they took their pads and their belts. He says they might lose an arm or a leg in their match. Road Dogg says one thing that won't be lost is the tag titles. He says when they come to town, they come to TCB.

We get a "Don't Try This at Home" PSA.

We see clips of a recent Kane vs Undertaker stand off from Raw 2 weeks ago. We then see Taker help out Kane.

Mania is 12 weeks away and The Royal Rumble is 2 weeks away.

Mark Henry vs D-Lo Brown

DB has Farooq and Kama with him. Mark is still in his pre-Nation days coming out to jazz music with black and red gear. Mark's rather muscular here too. They tell us the WWF is in negotiations with Mike Tyson.

Mark and DB lock up. DB is pushed into the corner. The Rock comes out. DB is pushed into the corner again off the lock up. DB knees him in the gut and hits very open handed punches. Mark shoulders DB over then hits a big slam. Mark clubs him and hits shots to the gut and spine.

Mark drops him with a forearm to the spine. DB 2nd rope diving lariats him. DB punches Mark in the gut several times. Mark punches back and DB eye rakes him twice. DB is popped-up and dropped. Mark hits a corner lariat. Mark ducks a lariat and bearhugs him. Kama and Farooq then run in and cause the DQ.

Thoughts: It was pretty simple and mostly ugly. They botched the pop-up/back body drop spot and they hit a bunch of shots to the gut and spine here.

The Rock joins in on the beatdown on Mar. Farooq whips Mark. Ken Shamrock runs down and helps out. He belly to belly suplexes Mark and The Nation leave.

We get a video on the Royal Rumble Sweepstakes where you can win Austin's pick-up truck.

The New Blackjacks (Blackjack Bradshaw & Blackjack Windham) vs The Truth Commission (Recon & Sniper)

The Jackyl is with The Commission. He puts a bead on a fan's head.  He says it's about intellectual intercourse and he has the best mind in the WWF.

Bradshaw locks up with Recon and side headlocks him. Bradshaw shoulders him over and side headlocks him. Recon drops down, kips up and is hiptossed. Bradshaw facekicks him. Jackyl says Kurrgan will be in The Rumble.

Recon hits punches on Bradshaw and Bradshaw fires back. Bradshaw arm whips him and single arm ddt's him. Bradshaw stomps him. Windham dropkicks Recon for 1 then hits a big punch. Windham hammerlock slams him. Windham forearms him then suplexes him with a floatover pin.

Recon's head is banged off of Bradshaw's boot and Recon takes a double shoulderblock. Bradshaw elbow drops Recon then hits boots and forearms. Bradshaw facekicks him down. Windham gutwrench suplexes Recon.

Sniper tags in. He hits shots on Windham and Windham flying double axe handles him. Sniper boots Windham out of the corner. Windham takes a sandwich lariat. Recon chinlocks Windham. Recon misses a corner charge and Bradshaw lariats him. Bradshaw dropkicks Recon then corner lariats him. Bradshaw drops him with a hard lariat. Sniper stops the count and is sent out.

Recon takes a backbdrop + neckbreaker combo. Jackyl then runs in, boots Windham and The Commission is DQ'd.

Thoughts:
Bradshaw beat the crap out of Recon here with some hard lariats and facekicks. The Commission didn't get much in but various punches and didn't look that great here, thought they were big dudes. Windham looked so much like his dad here. I liked the stiffness but it was pretty average, plus we got a dirty finish.

Windham backs up Jackyl in the corner as everyone fights. Kurrgan comes down and iron claws Windham. Kurrgan screams and actually makes the claw look somewhat painful. Jackyl pulls Kurrgan off and slaps him.

WWF Slam Jam

Dok hypes up a 1/25/98 Norristown house show with DOA vs Los Boricuas and The Rock and Farooq vs Cactus Jack and Steve Austin.

Austin does a promo. He says everyone knows Philadelphia likes a fight and says everyone in Philly knocks him and Jack. He says Rock and Farooq are muscled up but are sacrificial lambs. He tells them to run when the bell rings as if they catch them, they are going down.

Dok hypes up the rest of the card.

Our 1-800-Collect WWF Rewind moment is Steve Austin throwing Goldust into a port-a-potty. He says that's where he's belong. he then stunners him.

"Double J" Jeff Jarrett vs Scott Taylor

JJ's wearing the white, blue and orange here. JJ gets on the mic beforehand. He asks how many times will the WWF drop the ball. He says he's waited for weeks to get a suitable opponent and says he's been given a light heavyweight. He says he could have beaten him in his first match. JJ says he's only had 2 matches since he returned and his hand was raised both times. He says Scott is beneath him and he won't wrestle him. JJ says they need to find him a new opponent. JJ goes out and Scott baseball slides him.

Scott throws his shirt at JJ and JJ agrees to wrestle. Scott hits shots then flying back elbows him. Scott hits a dropkick. JJ stomps on Scott and bangs his head off the buckles. Scott is choked on the ropes.

JJ leg lariats him on the ropes and struts. We go to break and return. JJ ducks a crossbody. He bangs Scott's head off the apron and Scott lariats him outside. Scott uppercuts him then dropkicks him off the rails outside.

Scott hits punches on JJ then top rope diving sunset flips him inside for 2. Scott sunset flips him for 2. Scott bends over and takes a swinging neckbreaker. JJ suplexes him.

Scott elbows him out of the corner and hits punches. Scott is stopped up top then superplexed. JJ lays on the top buckle. Scott flips over him off the top. Scott holds his knee as he lands. JJ then figure fours him and Scott submits.

Thoughts:
It was a good match. Scott was a good underdog here and the finish was clever. The crowd sadly didn't care though which was disappointing but not surprising.

Overall thoughts: I was expecting all squashes here but we got 2 (or maybe 3) star vs star matches. Vader had a good squash. Blackman/Cicero wasn't that good. Mark Henry vs D-Lo was simple and ugly with a DQ finish. Bradshaw really stiffed poor Recon in their tag match but the work was average and there was a dirty finish. The main of Scott Taylor vs Jeff Jarrett was pretty good with a creative finish. I'd give the show a 5 out of 10 here as we had 2 dirty finishes that brought this down. There's nothing you need to see but the main was good.
