Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling 1/28/2024

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/01/southern-illinois-championship_22.html

Drew Abenhaus and Lucky P. Larson are our commentators today. Larson puts over The LA Hustlers, saying they are still the tag champs. They run down the card.

Shawn Douglas vs Bryce Cawvey

Douglas is in front, Cawvey is in the back

Larson says the ref has the weight advantage in this one. They shoulder battle and Bryce backdrops him. Bryce chinlocks him  and Shawn rope breaks. We are told they just graduated from their wrestling academies. Bryce dropkicks him in the armpit then Shawn chinlocks him. Larson talks about knowing Lanny Poffo and Missy Hyatt and says Spice is his favorite Nitro Girl.

Bryce does a side splash in the corner then Shawn hits chops. Shawn guillotine chokes him on the mat then stomps him against the bottom rope. Shawn knees him then hits a big lariat. Shawn tries to pin him with one foot. Shawn armlocks him and turns it into a dragon sleeper.

Bryce jawbreakers him then hits a nice knee to the head. Bryce hits mounted punches then headlocks him. Bryce rolls him up and Shawn ends up reversing it to pin him.

It wasn't good. These guys are both rookies from what we were told so you have to give them some leeway. They had a lot of rough moments here and the finish was botched.

Steve Fender is interviewed. Lucky P. Larson and Drew interview him. Steve says he beat Bobby D on his own and has not and will not ask for any help from Shawn Vincent. He said Shawn is a dipstick and he said he yelled at him when he (Vincent) interfered. He said he's not having people interfere in his matches. Drew brings out how Vincent interfering helped Steve get the title. Larson defends Steve and Steve says it takes Drew a while to catch onto things. Steve said he will not and has not asked Shawn Vincent for help in his matches.

Drew asks him if he views the Central States Title as a stepping stone to the SICW title. Steve said having that title should make him an automatic contender for Greg Anthony's title. He says he's a protege of Harley Race and has wrestled internationally. He said that puts him in contention for a title.

The first part was funny but I didn't like them saying the title was a stepping stone for other titles.

Ron Powers is interviewed. He says he is here as a viewer only and doesn't want to get involved. He said he hasn't been in the ring for 9 years and is over it. Ron said he was told it's harder to get out of the business than to get in and he says it's true. Drew asks what his goals are here. He said Herb Simmons asked him to come check things out and he said he wanted to see what things were going on himself.

Drew said he heard Ron added new moves to his arsenal and has been training in jiu jitsu. The crowd chants "you still got it" but he says he doesn't. Ron said he missed the fans when he left wrestling and said he had to fight demons while he was away. He said jiu jitsu has changed his life. Drew said he was scared of Ron now, but would be more scared of him now with jiu jitsu. Drew said he'd have a lot of new moves to add to his arsenal if he did wrestle. Ron said he wanted to talk to Danny Boy Hawkins and said they had an agreement. He said Danny's heart is too big and said his temper concerns him.

They were definitely hinting at Ron coming back here and we'll have to see what happens with that.

The Big Texan vs Richard Shaw

Shaw is in the robe, Texan is in the hat and jeans

Shaw does a big yell and Larson does it too. They lock up. Shaw backs him up in the corner and chops him. Shaw's head is banged off the buckle then Texan chops him. Texan headlock takeovers him. Texan hits shots in the corner then does corner spears.

Texan hits a big slam then sliding lariats him for 2. Texan clubs the back and Larson talks about how Texan hasn't defended his title against him. Texan hits a nice lariat out of the corner and picks up the win.

This was a short squash. Texan's lariat was nice at the end of this.

Shawn Vincent and Glenn Williams are interviewed by Drew. He asks them about Vincent interfering in the Bobby D/Steve Fender match and costing Bobby the title. Shawn said he's happy about Bobby losing the title and said it could be anyone as champ as long as it is not him. Shawn said he doesn't need to help Steve nor does Steve need his help. Shawn says it's not over with him and Bobby D. He said he will be the thorn in his side and will not be done with him until he is a crushed skull underneath his boots. Glenn says Bobby should thank Shawn as now he's on a vacation. Glenn says it's not over with him and Danny Boy. Glenn says if Steve can call out the champ, why can't Shawn? Shawn says he is coming for Bobby D. He says he will be haunting him in his dreams until he is out of SICW forever.

Austin Mulitalo vs Billy Joe Black

Austin is in the White, Black is in the flannel and jeans

Larson sings Regal's "Real Man's Man" theme at Black. Austin is the MSW Missouri champ.

Austin side headlocks him then they trade hammerlocks. Black wrist and armlocks him. Black then la magistral's him. Black shoulders him over then flying shoulders him. Austin hits forearms then Black flips him over by the arm.

Austin cravates and snapmares him then hits a knee drop for 2. Black sunset flips him. Drew talks about Austin turning heel and acting different. Larson says maybe it's Drew and maybe he should shower more. Austin does a flying double knee and gets the win.

It was a short one here It was over before it really got going.

Austin Multalo is interviewed after. He said Larson is his lawyer now. Drew says Austin is insulting fans he used to be friends with. Austin says nothing has changed, he's just sick and tired of being sick and tired. He said he broke his shoulder for the fans and still got no respect. He says he's one of one and is taking wrestling by storm. He said his goal is to take down every fan favorite one by one. He says if you get in his way, you're going down. Drew said hopefully we can get back to the Austin everyone likes and Austin says no and says you will be hearing from his lawyer.

This was a good promo by Austin and he really has a hateable voice.

Wrestling at The Chase - JJ Dillion and Mike Kelly vs Rufus R. Jones and Kerry Von Erich

Kerry and Mike start us off. Kerry is backed up into the corner. Kerry arm wringers him then Mike trips him from behind. Mike side headlocks him. Kenny takes him down by the wrist and knee drops it then Mike tags out. JJ hits shots on Kerry.

Kerry hits shots to the gut on JJ and JJ rolls Kerry on the mat.  Kerry goes between JJ's legs and tags in Jones. Jones and JJ trade shots. Jones has some bizarre punches and movements.  Mike gets in and takes a shot from Jones. Jones grabs him by the beard and yanks it.

Jones tags Kerry in. Kerry takes Mike over by the arm then knees him while he has him in the hammerlock. Kerry is put in the corner. JJ hits shots on Kerry and hiptosses him. Jones gets in and hits punches on JJ. Mike gets in and takes shots then shoulder blocks.

Mike full-nelson's Jones and JJ dropkicks Mike on accident. Kerry dropkicks JJ out of the ring. Jones headbutts Mike and wins it.

It was a quick one. This was notable as they had two refs for this one. Everything Jones did looked awful but he had a lot of spirit behind his moves. I liked the beard pull and I think more people should definitely do that spot.

Kowalski vs Curtis Wylde

Kowalski in the back, Wylde is in the fur

Wylde evades Kowalski and hits him in the back. Ron Powers is on commentary. Wylde hits nice punches and flurries him on the ropes. Wylde boots him out. Kowalski talks to Larson on the outside then hits Wylde from the apron. Kowalski works his neck over the 2nd rope then Larson chokes Wylde on the ropes.

Kowalski foot chokes Wylde then wylde clubs on him on the ropes. Kowalski rakes his face then headbutt drops him for 2. Kowalski steps on his hair and pulls his arms. Kowalski hits headbutts then misses a splash. Wyle spinebusters him and Larson gets on the apron.

Wylde gets distracted then Kowalski hits Wylde with a briefcase. Kowalski then wins it.

It was short and fine for what it was. Kowalski moves well for being such a big guy. Wylde had good punches as usual.

Danny Boy Hawkins then comes out from the back. He tells the ref what happened. The ref reverses the decision. Wyle pushes Kowalski, Kowalski swings at him and is hit with the briefcase.

Overall thoughts: Not great but a fun show with the commentary being good and the old school feel always being a treat. The main was decent here and Austin Mulitalo was decent.
