WWF Superstars of Wrestling 6/15/1991
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/11/wwf-superstars-of-wrestling-681991.html
Vince McMahon says Father's Day is near. He is joined by Roddy Piper and Macho Man Randy Savage. Roddy Piper unwraps a present and it's a tie. He puts it around his neck. Macho says Piper doesn't wear the pants in his family and says he should give him a father's day present - putting a headlock on him.
Bret Hart vs Louie Spicolli
Lou has a nice black jacket on and is looking thin here. Piper says Vince's family should get him new underwear for Father's Day. Lou side headlocks Bret. Bret back elbows him then atomic drops him. Bret elbow drops him.
We get an inset promo from Bret. He says the summer time is hot and it's time to get in the shade of Pink, Hitman style. We then see him put on his sunglasses. Bret headbutts Lou then backbreakers him. Bret 2nd rope elbow drops Lou and stomps his gut. Vince brings up Stu Hart.
Bret slams Lou then legdrops him. Bret suplexes him then sharpshooters him. Lou then taps out.
Thoughts: It was all squash here with Bret doing most of the five moves of doom en route to victory. There wasn't much of note in this one. Louie got nothing in.
WWF Update
The 2nd Annual Battle of the Superstars is on sale June 27th. You get a Coliseum Video keychain if you buy it. Gene talks about the Jimmy Hart and Andre the Giant situation and we see clips from the attack on Andre.
We see Andre walking to the ring with a cane and then he does a promo. Andre says he doesn't want to be on Jimmy's team. He says Earthquake will never have the chance to sneak attack him again. Gene says Andre needs reconstructive knee surgery and says he has a questionable future in the WWF.
We see a clip of Sid Justice.
"The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase vs Larry Luden
Ted has Sherri with him. Macho says he only had a professional relationship with Sherri. Macho is asked about his relationship with Miss Elizabeth. Vince says maybe they are thinking of tying the knot. Macho says it's none of his business. Ted shoulders Larry over and boots him when he's bent over. Ted back elbows Larry. Vince asks if Macho is going to ask Liz to marry him. Macho says who knows if it's true or not and says it's not his business.
Ted suplexes Larry and sends him out. Larry's head is banged off the buckles. Ted hits a nice lariat in the ring and fist drops him. Ted powerslams Larry then puts him to sleep with the million dollar dream.
Thoughts: It was a short one with Larry getting nothing in. Ted's offense looked good as usual here and this was all about Vince asking if Macho will marry Miss Elizabeth.
Ted puts money in Larry's mouth after.
Roddy Piper is on this month's WWF Wrestling Spotlight Magazine.
WWF Event Center
Sean Mooney talks about the tag division. He says Power and Glory can turn off The Nasty Boys' power. Power and Glory do a promo. Roma says if you want to be the best tag team, you gotta talk about Power and Glory. Roma says they are the best and says to look at his back as you they are always so far ahead of everyone. Herc says he and Slick aren't in good moods. Herc says is you want to keep chasing, they will keep knocking you down.
The British Bulldog does a promo with Winston. Davey says he's been undefeated and says the top managers are putting the top contenders in front of him. He says he will go through all of Heenan's men and everyone else's men until he gets to Mr. Perfect. He says he wants what Perfect has got and says him and Winston will take the belt.
The Mountie vs Stephan de Leon
Mountie boots Steph then bangs his head off the buckles. The Big Boss Man does an inset promo. He says Mountie made it to the top of his most wanted list. He says he will hunt him down like the piece of trash he is. Mountie slaps Steph, saying he's law and order. Mountie dropkicks Steph.
Mountie mounts Steph then nodowa otoshi's him. Mountie then gets the win.
Thoughts: This was the usual Mountie unimpressive squash. I know they are telling him to work this way on purpose to fit his gimmick, but it doesn't do much to put him over.
Mountie handcuffs Steph to the turnbuckle connector. Mountie says Steph is under arrest and says anything he says will be held against him in his court of law. He then zaps him with the shockstick.
WWF Event Center
Sean Mooney talks about The Mountie. Jake Roberts does an inset promo. He said he abused animals when he was a kid. He says he's no kid anymore and learned to appreciate beauty and himself. He says he learned to hate things like drugs, alcohol, driving and people who abuse things. He says he's talking about Quake and Jimmy. He says if Jimmy doesn't wake Quake up, he and Lucifer will.
Irwin R Schyster does a promo. He says when you go to bed, he's still awake and when you wake up, he's already awake. He says all the tax cheats should know he works 24/7/365 and says when you deal with the IRS, you will pay the punishment. He says no one is above his law and says if you deal with the IRS, you will lose.
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs The Black Knight
The Black Knight is one of my favorite jobbers so I'm ready for this one.
Jim starts a USA chant. They bump chests. Jim gags at Knight's breath. He hits some punches and knocks him over. Jim lariats him and Knight goes out to stall. Jim hits corner spears. Knight hits some punches and shots to the gut.
Jim boots him then hiptosses him. Jim lariats him and Vince says Jim needs to stay away from Knight's breath. Jim running lariats Knight and wins.
Thoughts: This was an odd one with Jim gagging at Knight's breath and Vince running with it. It was a quick squash here with Knight getting some offense in before being put down.
The Funeral Parlor
Paul Bearer welcomes us and says his guest is Mr. Perfect. Mr. Perfect comes out and says he wants to introduce his former manager - Bobby Heenan. He says Heenan will be more successful as a broadcast journalist. Bobby Heenan comes out. He says he will far surpass anything any other typewriter pushers acheived because they are not perfect. Perfect then brings out Coach, who is John Tolos. Coach blows his whistle.
He says Vince Lombardi and others are peanuts who are at the bottom of the totem pole. He says The New York Giants wanted him to coach the team. Coach says who wants to coach a football team when he can coach Mr. Perfect? Coach then raises Perfect's hand and blows his whistle a bunch of times.
Thoughts: This was weird as Heenan was already a longtime commentator. Coach got instant heel heat with me for blowing his whistle about 2 dozen times and completely annoying me.
The Nasty Boys and Earthquake vs The Bushwhackers and Tugboat
Piper calls The Nasty's, "Big Bird and Leon". Knobbs hits punches on Luke. Luke lariats him. Butch hits punches on Knobbs' gut. Saggs hits shots on Butch and Butch knees him in the gut. Butch kneelifts him. Butch wants to tag in Tug but Tug is too busy doing his horn sounds.
Luke takes shots from Knobbs and Knobbs misses a corner charge. Luke bites Knobbs' face. Tug and Quake get in. They stare down and Tug tags in Butch. Quake stomps on Luke and walks on him. Luke takes a double elbow drop. Quake powerslams Luke for 2. Everyone gets in to fight. Butch grabs Jimmy Hart and Tug nails Butch from behind. Tug throws Butch out then splashes Luke. Quake then butt drops Luke and pins him.
Thoughts: Well this was pretty much here to turn Tugboat heel. It was a short one and with not much but various punches thrown. I don't know what happened around Summerslam '90 (and no one seems to) but Vince clearly gave up on Tugboat around then. I'm surprised it took so long to turn him. There wasn't a lot of reasoning or hints at the turn here.
Tugboat and Earthquake hug after. Tug then raises the heels' hands and Jimmy celebrates. The crowd is stunned.
Col. Mustafa vs Matthew Burns
Vince wonders why Tugboat turned. Sgt and Adnan are with Mustafa. Sarge yells in Burns' face. Mustafa clubs on Burns then kicks him. Mustafa gutwrench suplexes him and clubs him down.
Piper calls Burns, "Mat Burns", making a joke. Mustafa backdrops Burns. Piper says he is bringing Virgilina on Primetime Wrestling this week. Mustafa submits Burns with the camel clutch.
Thoughts: It was short and there wasn't much to this one.
Mustafa camel clutches Burns and Burns is thrown out after.
WWF Event Center
Paul Bearer and The Undertaker do a promo. Paul says when him and Taker walk down the aisle, all you have to do is look at the faces. He says they don't understand what is going on but he says wrestlers are running scared. He says Taker doesn't want the title and doesn't care about championships. Taker says all he thinks about are the wrestlers souls, champions or not.
The Rockers do a promo. Marty says they aren't the tag champs but just are the greatest team the WWF has. Marty says wrestlers avoid them and they can't land title shots. Marty says they are the youngest team and have plenty of time to wait. Shawn says the WWF has them climbing a ladder in quick sand. Shawn says they stumble and trip but never fall. He says no one in the WWF can make them back down.
Vince, Piper and Macho close the show. The Beverly Brothers debut next week. Boss Man will be in The Funeral Parlor. Macho says he and Miss Elizabeth will be at the Personal Fitness Expo and The WBF Championship this weekend. He talks about Ultimate Warrior. Piper tells him to keep his shirt on if he poses in the contest.
Overall thoughts: Tugboat turning heel was the big thing on the show. There wasn't much build up to it or any hints about it. We also heard that Bobby Heenan will no longer manage Mr. Perfect and that Coach is taking over for him. Coach was only on TV for 2 minutes but he blew his whistle like crazy. We were also told that Andre the Giant's career is in jeopardy and we learned that The Beverly Brothers debut next week. The matches weren't much here but event wise, it was notable. I liked the show but it's not something I would recommend. These shows are just all squashes and never super exciting.
