Pro Wrestling USA 1/12/1985

Pro Wrestling USA 1/12/1985

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/02/pro-wrestling-usa-151985.html

From:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMZ2t8xsGnc

Ken Resnick welcomes us to the show and runs down the card for tonight.

Blackjack Lanza is interviewed. He says The Roadwarriors vs The Fabs tonight will have Baron Von Raschke in the corner of the Fabs due to Paul Ellering's interference. He also promises a "big big surprise" later. Lanza says Baron will even up the odds and we will see who the real champions are tonight.

Curt Hennig and Greg Gagne vs. Dennis Stamp and Billy Robinson

Curt and Greg are both second generation wrestlers, which was probably kind of a rare combination at that point. The faces are both wearing red and white jackets.

Greg does a nice go-around into a hammerlock and they trade hammerlocks. Curt comes in and then trades with Stamp. Robinson does a nice side suplex and a nice neckbreaker on Curt for 2. Greg headlock takeovers Robinson and hits a dropkick on him. Stamp headstands to get out of a headscissors but Greg keeps it on.

Stamp gets out and tags in Robinson. Robinson downs him with a euro uppercut then takes a big body slam and a dropkick. Curt double axe handles Robinson's arm off the 2nd rope then Curt gets his throat worked over. Greg back body drops Stamp and hits another dropkick. Curt comes off the 2nd rope with a dropkick to win it.

This probably went around 5 minutes. It wasn't great or anything but I thought the technical wrestling was okay.

Greg and Curt are interviewed after. Curt says he is back and stronger than ever. Greg said he hasn't wrestled for months thanks to Al-Kassie and his crew injuring his knee. Greg says Jim Brunzell is now out due to Al-Kassie and crew. He says they haven't heard the last of them and thanks Curt for stepping in for Jim. Greg says Jim Brunzell won't be out for long, but they will come for The Shiek when he returns.

Jerry Blackwell vs Crazy Luke Graham

Graham is with Sheik Adnan Al-Kassie. Kassie gets on the mic but who knows what he said. Blackwell takes some shots on Kassie and Blackwell takes on both. The heels 2v1 Blackwell with Sheik hitting Blackwell with his arm cast.

Graham hits some punches then Kassie bangs his cast off of Blackwell's head as he hangs over the 2nd rope. Blackwell makes a comeback on Graham and no sells his punches. Blackwell is hulking up here and punches him and headbutts him. Blackwell hits a corner splash and Graham does a nice plop down for it.

Kassie is on the apron and gets dragged into the ring. He takes some punches and a lariat. Blackwell then power slams him for the win. Kassie yells at Blackwell outside after and Blackwell scares them off.

This was quick and I don't quite get how Graham wasn't disqualified for the 2v1. I still thought it was kind of fun though.

Blackwell is interviewed after. He says he will beat up all of Kassie's crew and says someday he will get Kassie 1v1. He says he will only be satisfied when he puts Kassie in a hospital bed and sends him back to Iraq. He says the US sticks together.

The Masked Superstar and Mr. Saito vs. Steve Olsonowski and Jerry Monte

Sheik is with his boys as usual. Steve O takes some shots early and does a nice little roll out of a chin lock. He hits some good punches on MS and MS fights out of a 2v1 in the corner. Ms hits a mongolian chop then hits his layback flying clothesline.  MS then nails Jerry with the spinning neckbreaker for the quick win.

This was extremely short and a waste of time.

MS, Saito and Sheik are interviewed. Sheik says he is finished with Blackwell and brags about his boys putting Brunzell out. MS asks Brunzell if he really wants to get in the ring with him? MS says he's not happy with his job on Brunzell though as he still thinks he can get in the ring with him, when next time, he will beat him so bad he won't even try. Saito talks about how much money Sheik pays him.

Kamala vs. Tom Zenk and Eddie Sullivan

Friday's wearing camo today. Kamala goes to choke Zenk and punches him in the armpit. Kamala then does the double armpit hold and throws him. Eddie runs into Kamala and goes right down, then takes a big chop. Kamala hits the double throat thrust on Eddie then splashes him...but Zenk interrupts the count! Zenk gets picked up and slammed on Eddie then Kamala pins them both to win it. Kamala refuses to stop pinning them after.

This was a very short squash but Eddie took some good bumps and I liked Kamala pinning both.

Ken Resnick interviews Paul Ellering and The Road Warriors. Paul says the Fabs won't surprise them tonight and says he is the one eyed man in the kingdom of the blind. Hawk mocks them saying, "You've got a surprise? Well, whooptie-do". Hawk says they took up a collection for flowers for the Fabs after they injure them tonight. Animal calls them overrated punks and says he will put them in their place.

AWA Tag Titles - The Road Warriors with Paul Ellering vs The Fabulous Ones with Baron Von Raschke

LOL BARON VON RASCHKE IS IN FABULOUS ONES SUSPENDERS. God that's hilarious, it's like if your accountant forgot to wear a shirt to work. The Road Warriors enter to Iron Man but the Fabs get no music.

Hawk hits a nice hiptoss on Keirn then does it again. Keirn then gives Hawk a hiptoss and an armdrag back and puts up his dukes. Keirn works the arm and Lane comes in and continues. Keirn hits a flying crossbody for 2 on Hawk. Baron and Paul argue outside.

Animal backbreakers Lane three times and Lane hits the sunset flip for 2. Hawk steps on Lane's face and chokes him. Hawk gorilla presses Lane and slams him down hard. Animal slams Lane but Lane gets his knees up on a splash attempt.

Lane rolls to the wrong corner for the tag but finally gets it. Keirn gets the hot tag and forearms Animal. Keirn gets tripped by Ellering outside and all 4 men fight in the ring as Baron chases Paul. Paul gets in the ring and Baron follows with a chair as the ref calls off the match. Baron tries to hit Paul with the chair but he gets out of the way.

No winner on this one. It was what it needed to be with the heels looking strong then the faces making their comeback. The chaos at the end was fun but it wasn't must see or anything.

Ken Resnick has the big surprise ready. He brings in Sgt Slaughter. Sarge says he went on leave and the world had nothing to offer him, so he came to Pro Wrestling USA. Ken asks who the "world" refers to and Sarge tells Ken "you know what I'm talking about", basically saying the WWF. Sarge says he's giving his heart and life and is fighting for everyone one of us and the USA. Ken asks what he thinks about various wrestlers and mentions "The Sheik". Sarge says he destroyed the Sheik at MSG, and Ken reminds him this is a different Sheik. Sarge says "You mean there's another Sheik? Another scum? Another slime?". Sarge says he is here and will take care of some business. This promo was hilarious, but for the wrong reasons. Sarge came off as completely out of touch and buried PWUSA, but it was very funny when he found out there was another Sheik.

Ken and Sarge hype next week's show and Sarge tells us to be here, as that's an order.

Overall thoughts:
This was an 80's show alright with the usual squashes and a dirty finish to the main. There were some fun promos as expected and Baron's Fabulous Ones gear was hilarious. Sarge kind of buried the promotion in his promo, but I loved it when he found out there was "ANOTHER SHEIK?".

Pro Wrestling USA 1/5/1985

Pro Wrestling USA 1/5/1985

This is Pro Wrestling USA. It was the AWA's and the NWA's idea to fight off Vince. It didn't work and was never going to as wrestling promoters are carnies, but it's a real "what could have been?" promotion.

Ken Resnick welcomes us to the show.

Verne is interviewed and tells us about Jim Brunzell. His neck is injured and he has a slight concussion thanks to The Sheik and friends. Verne promises to kick Sheik out of the NWA, AWA and the country if he does it again.

The Masked Superstar vs Tom Zenk

MS is with Sheik Adnan Al-Kassie and Mr. Saito. Zenk gets pounded on and takes a nice bodyslam. MS back elbows him and beats him against the top rope. Zenk gets thrown out and MS takes shots at him from the apron before ramming him into the apron. MS then pulls Zenk's neck down over the top rope.

Zenk hits a nice lay back flying clothesline then hits a spinning neckbreaker for the win in a total squash. Everything MS did here looked good.

Sheik, Superstar and Saito are interviewed after. Sheik says Saito is #1 in Japan. Superstar says nobody in the back wants part of them. He says Sheik has money and tells Ken to talk to Sheik to get money, and recommends he try beating up Zenk to get some.

Kamala vs Jerry Monte

The dreaded ARMPIT HOLD~!

I don't like Jerry's chances here. He's wearing boots with tassles. Jerry climbs Kamala's back and gets clubbed and choked in the corner. The ref yells at Kamala and Kamala slaps his belly at him before continuing the clubbing. Kamala grabs both of Jerry's armpits and clubs him more.

Kamala chokes him more and punches him in the armpit then chops him in the throat. Kamala hits the double throat thrust and splashes him on the back to win in a quick squash.

The ref and his handler Friday try to pull him off after. Kamala goes up top but Friday talks him out of it. The announcers say he needs to be chained and put in a cage.

Ken Resnick takes us to:

The Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant vs The Invader

Invader eats some hiptosses and takes a back elbow. Valiant then wins with an elbow drop in less than a minute. The Invader was a bump machine here.

The Fabulous Ones vs Eddie Sullivan & Zulu

Stan Lane ain't got nothin' on Eddie Sullivan

Zulu's a big dude. Lane armdrags Eddie then Keirn headlock takedowns Eddie. Eddie kind of blows a headlock takedown then gets chinlocked by Lane. Paul Ellering is down at ringisde and is yelling at Keirn. The jobbers take over and barely get Lane up for a double slam.

Lane drops down and Keirn nails Eddie with a forearm to win it. Zulu only got to do the double bodyslam and nothing else in another quick squash.

The Fabulous Ones are interviewed. Keirn says they will take on The Roadwarriors anytime and tells them to come out on tv against them. Lane tells them to sign the contract and get them some.

Baron Von Raschke & Jerry Blackwell vs Dennis Stamp & Billy Robinson

Billy Robinson

Billy is "The British Empire Champion". The announcers outright say Baron and Jerry are an unusual team. Baron hiptosses Stamp and Stamp tags out. Billy gets some strikes in on Baron and is slammed and tags back out.

Jerry armdrags Stamp and drops the leg on his arm. Stamp gets his arm worked over more and takes a double kick to the chest. Baron bangs Stamp's head off the buckle and gets kicked when he bends over. Billy gets tagged in, hits some punches and hits a nice neckbreaker for 2 on Baron. Baron gets the claw but Billy tags out.

Stamp gets a bunch of punches in but is poked in the eye by Baron. Blackwell headbutts him and drops a jumping elbow on him. Billy breaks the count on a powerslam but Baron claws Billy for it. Blackwell then hits a samoan drop for the win.

This was short but wasn't bad at all with everyone getting some decent looking offense in.

Da kids love Da Baron
Resnick interviews Blackwell and Baron. Blackwell says it is easy to look and be good with the Baron. He asks the Roadwarriors to put the AWA Tag Titles to come put the belts on the line against them. Baron says they are the greatest of friends and says they want the world tag titles. Baron says they mean business and Blackwell brings in some kids to pose with them in a good promo that really makes you want to see that match.

AWA Title -  Rick Martel vs Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin with Precious

The announcer says "its the bout you've been waiting for". Garvin has a great sparkly red robe on and Martel skips his entrance to get in the ring at Garvin. Rick is fired up and ready to go here.

Jimmy hits some knees to the gut and Martel hurricanrana's him then punch flurries him. Martel hits some fiery punches and Garvin falls out of the ring. Precious gets on the apron and Jimmy goes ofr the sneak attack but takes an atomic drop.

Martel slingshots Garvin in and pulls him off the ropes, making him hit his head. Martel hits some nice punches and works the arm then hammerlocks him. Garvin grabs the hair, chokes him and puts him in a chinlock to make it look clean.

Garvin gets thrown into the buckle but clotheslines Martel then Martel takes a big bump as he is thrown over the top. Martel is thrown out and Jimmy gets knocking him away from the apron. Martel's getting mad and hits a big punch that Jimmy does a great sell for. Jimmy gets his head banged off the buckle then Martel slingshot splashes in for 2.

Jimm rolls to the corner and they get the fans counting for Martel's stomps on him.  Precious hands Jimmy brass knucks and he nails Martel with it. Precious distracts the ref and Jimmy gets a 3 count! The ref holds up his hand though and sees it while Jimmy grabs the title belt. The ref takes the belt back and gives it to Martel for the DQ win.

Garvin kicks Martel in the back of the head hard and throws him over the top.

This was great. Everything these two did looked good. Martel threw some awesome punches and had fire like no face I have seen for a long time and Garvin took some great bumps for him. I'm sure this was a nothing match by 1980's standards, but this is mind blowing work in 2022.

Resnick interviews Garvin after. Garvin says he won the title and is furious. Garvin says Martel had the brass knucks and he tried to take it from Martel, but the ref blamed him for it. Garvin again says he is the champion and Resnick corrects him.

Resnick interviews Verne Gagne again. Verne said he is thankful the ref saw what happened and said he did the right thing. He says he doesn't want stuff like to happen in the NWA or the AWA. Verne tells us to hang onto our seats and announces The Fabulous Ones vs The Road Warriors for next week plus another surprise.

Overall thoughts:
A fun hour of wrestling. The main was great with both guys doing textbook face and heel work. The interview after was great too. I thought the semi-main wasn't bad for being so short and I liked the Baron/Blackwell promo after.

I expected nothing going into this, but I really ended up liking this and wanting to see more.
