UWF Fury Hour 10/1/1990 Episode 1

UWF Fury Hour 10/1/1990 Episode 1

Herb Abrams and Bruno Sammartino are on commentary. Bruno says he's thrilled to be here and says we are in for an hour that will be a real treat.

They run down the card which has a bunch of ex-WWF and WCW names.

"Dr. Death" Steve Williams vs Davey Meltzer

Steve lariats Davey and bangs his head off the buckles.  Steve hits lariats and a short arm clothesline. Bruno says he doesn't know much about Davey. Steve hits shots to the face and headbutts him. Steve gorilla presses him and kicks him.

Steve headbutts him and kicks him in the ribs. Steve clubs on Davey's chest then suplexes him in from the apron. Steve hits a 3-point stance shoulderblock. Steve then does it again.

Steve punches him then hits an oklahoma stampede to win.

Thoughts
: As the announcers said several times, this was a one-sided squash. Davey put up no fight here and destroyed. I don't know why it needed to go on as long as it did. Davey was obviously named after Dave Meltzer and they were taking a shot at him in this one.

Steve rips up a Wrestling Observer newsletter and shoves it in Davey's mouth after.

"The Unpredictable" Cactus Jack vs David Sammartino

Herb says Jack is from the Twilight Zone.

They lock up and Dave is backed up into the corner. They each get  as hot in. Jack does an inset promo. He ays he'd rather hurt a man than love a woman. He says he'll have to settle for hurting Dave. David Sammartino says he's no walk in the park.

Dave hits shots to the gut. Jack trips David off the corner charge and uses the ropes for a pin attempt. David chops him down. Jack pokes him and David hits slaps. David hits knees to the arm and ribs.

Dave kimura's him then Jack pulls him down by the hair off the top wristlock. David stomps the arm and sends Jack into the buckles shoulder first. David knees him from behind then snapmares him. David armlocks him.

Dave legdrops the arm. Jack hits some punches and sends him into the buckles. Jack misses a corner charge. Dave hits more knees to the arm and hammerlocks him.  Dave stomps and stands on the arm. Jack maybe bites him in the gut.

Jack lariats him then throws him out. Jack drops him throat first on the rail outside. We go to break. Davd says the UWF is putting the pro wrestling back into pro wrestling. He says the UWF is the only promotion that isn't making a mockery of wrestling. He says that's why he's here.

B. Brian Blair does a promo for UWF merch. It's $9.95 for a hat and $12.95 for a shirt.

Steve Williams says the world's turning, the stocks are up and the UWF is up. He says there's a lot of great athletes but you are looking at the greatest. He says he doesn't cal UWF the la-la-land. He says California has The Chargers, The 49ers, The Raiders and they are looking at another champ in Steve Williams. The announcer then says the UWF is returning to California.

We go back to the match and Jack suplexes Dave in. Jack chinlocks Dave and Bruno talks about how he has to stay neutral while watching his son get beaten. Dave electric chairs him and drops him back. Jack atomic drops him then headbutts him. Jack lariats him over the top and goes with him in a nice spot. Jack then does his "bang bang" pose. Dave suplexes Jack on the floor.

Dave chops him in the ring then slaps him. Dave boots him in the gut and cradles him for 2. Dave hits shots to the gut then hits punches to the face. Jack hits a neckbreaker. Dave is thrown hard into the buckles and goes down. Dave hits more punches and Jack eye rakes him.

Dave knees and chops him. Jack eye rakes him then headbutts the ref for no reason, sending him out. David wins by DQ.

Thoughts: It was long and not that good. David endlessly worked the arm early on then hit a bunch of punches. Jack stuck to chinlocks and boots and then got himself DQ'd for no real reason.

Billy Jack Haynes vs Spitball Patterson

BJ has all black on and waistlock takedowns SP. BJ Takes him down by the arm then armlocks him. SP uppercuts him then clubs his back. SP flying back elbows him. SP spears him in the gut then running back elbows him.

SP is sent into the buckles chest first then BJ germans him. BJ dives off the 2nd rope and shoves his face into the mat. BJ jumping knee drops him. BJ then submits him with the full nelson.

Thoughts:
Spitball got a little before going down at least so it wasn't a total squash. Billy had a nice german suplex here. It was just average.

We see clips from the UWF's debut press conference on 8/26/1990 in NYC. Herb, Brian Blair and Dan Spivey are there. Blair says Dan hasn't been too successful without Sid Vicious. Dan mumbles and I think he says Brian was sitting behind the desk at a gym. Dan throws water in Blair's face then rams him into the wall. He then tips the table over.

Captain Lou's Corner

Lou says he's asked where you find the world's greatest wrestling and he says it's the UWF. B. Brian Blair comes in. Blair says Spivey is the man he despises the most right now. He says Spivey has a lot of nerve. He says he was being a gentleman and Spivey threw water in his face to make a name for himself. He says Spivey is a big and tough man but he's only a human being. Lou says Spivey is big and cocky. He says the extra size won't help as Blair has leverage. Lou says he will put his money on Blair. Blair says Spivey will look like he has a bad case of the hives.

Billy Jack Haynes does a promo. He says he's in the best shape of his life and has to be as he wrestles all over the globe. He says he loves the kids but he gets in the ring to win. He says he came to do one thing - fight and win.

We get another commercial for UWF merch.

Col. DeBeers does a promo. He says the world has been against him for too long. he says the UWF promised him a title. He says it's time there's fairness in America. he says the US is blind that politicians lie to them, that the national debt is soaring and the Debeers has never been given the proper recognition he deserves. He says in the valley of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Colonel DeBeers vs Michael Allen

Mike armwringers him. Col snapmares him and slams him down by the hair. Col knees and double axe handles his back. Col punches him in the face then bangs Mike's head off his boot.

Col hits a lariat. Col backbreakers him. Col put's Mike head on his leg and rams his leg into the mat. Mike headscissors takeovers Col then hits a dropkick. Mike misses a dropkick. Col puts his knee behind Mike's neck and drives it into the mat. Col then ddt's him to win.

Thoughts
: It was all Debeers roughhousing here. Mike got a headscissors and a dropkick in but not much else. This was a squash.

Paul Orndorff vs. Riki Ataki

Paul side headlocks him off the lock up then shoulders him over. Paul hits a big lariat then throws Riki out. Riki is sent into the post. Paul stomps on him then bangs is head off the buckles. Paul hits a dropkick then hits a suplex for 2.

Paul knees him in the gut and stomps him. Paul hits a shot to the gut then hits a knee lift. Paul hits a top rope elbow to the head. Paul then hits the piledriver and gets the pin.

Thoughts
: It was a good squash. Paul moved well here and was real fiery and full of energy. He looked as good as I have ever seen him here.

Steve Williams pushes Paul from behind after. The ref gets between them and Steve pushes the ref out. They motion like they are going to fight but Steve walks off.

Dan Spivey vs. B. Brian Blair

Dan takes him time to get in the ring. BB grabs him as soon as he does and they grapple. Dan clubs him then hits a nice big boot. BB's head is banged off the mat and Dan kicks his back. Dan forearms him in the back.

Dan chokes him on the ropes. Dan bearhugs him. BB gets out then is lariated. They trade punches. Dan lifts him with a choke and drops him down. BB hits him in the gut. Dan double axe handles his back.

BB back body drops him. Dan abdominal stretches him. BB hiptosses him then misses an elbow drop. Dan hits a neckbreaker for 2. BB boots him then hits some punches. Dan eye rakes him.

Dan hits a corner lariat. Dan foot chokes him. BB boots him out of the corner. BB elbows him off the buckles. BB face busters Dan. BB lariats him.

Dan pulls BB out of the ring. Dan goes into the post and no sells it. They trade punches while fighting outside and both get counted out.

Thoughts: They had a lot of nice punches here and the execution was solid. They did make it look like they were in a brawl and Blair was a decent face in this one. I'm not surprised at the finish as they couldn't really pin one of these guys on the first show when they were being featured as the main feud.

They fight outside and Dan is pulled down to the floor. Various wrestlers then try to break it up.

Bruno and Herb close the show. Next week's show has Colonel DeBeeers vs Billy Jack Haynes.

Overall thoughts: It's 1990's TV. We weren't getting any clean finishes to major matches here and getting non-squashes period was a small win on its own. Orndorff looked good in his squash as he was full of energy and moving well. I think they did an okay job in building up some future stuff with Williams/Orndorff and Blair/Spivey. Jack/Sammartino got a lot more time than it needed. Bruno wasn't that great on commentary as usual but I thought Herb did well as he had a lot of energy, had a nice voice for this and seemed likeable. I'd give this one a 5 out of 10. There was nothing must see, but they mostly did what they were supposed to do here and built up some stuff for next week.
