NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #9 8/14/2002

NWA-TNA Weekly PPV #9 8/14/2002

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2025/03/nwa-tna-weekly-ppv-8-872002.html

Don West, Mike Tenay and Ed Ferrara are on commentary.

We see clips of Ron "The Truth" Killings winning the title last week.

The Truth comes out with the title. He says you wanted The Truth last week and you got it. He says the fans are in his house from now on. He says his house is called the TNA Asylum. He says he became a legend last week.

He says he came into TNA as a bitter man and wasn't sure if he got the opportunities he was supposed to get. He says his skin color has always made it more difficult to compete. He says we all know him from the WWF. He says he was told by a WWF official that he could not make the same mistakes others did because of his skin color. He asks how it would make you feel. He says he's a black man in a man's world. He says he is a legend.

He talks more abut racism and says we all get an opportunity at some point. He says what we do with it matters. He says he will do what he does best - knock the stuff of someone's stinkin' @ss. He says to never give up on your dreams as a part of you dies with it.

Jeff Jarrett comes out. He calls him Walt Disney and says that's enough. He tells him to put his dreams away as he's dealing with his worst nightmare. He says we have a case of reverse discrimination. Truth says he won the title last week so that didn't happen. Jeff says he's not denying that but says Truth was given the opportunity while Jeff has been robbed week after week. Jeff says he wants a chance to tonight at the title.

Truth says they have been good friends and says what goes on here is business. Truth says it is personal and tells him to come get the title if he wants it.

Bill Behrens comes out with a silly looking cowboy hat and security including Don Harris and Bob Armstrong. Bill says there's a new sheriff in town and says Jeff is looking at him. He calls Jeff slapnuts. He says he's back with a vengeance. He says kick my @ss once, shame on you. Kick my @ss twice, shame on you.

Bill says Ricky Steamboat can't be here tonight, so Jeff is looking at the man in charge. He says Jeff and Truth can brawl all over the building if they want but it won't be sanctioned.

Bill says if the match happens, it won't happen for the title. Jeff threatens him and Brian Lawler nails Jeff Jarrett from behind. Brian hits punches on him and bangs his head off the commentary table. They fight on the ramp. Brian fights a fan for a chair. Security tries to separate them. Jeff hits shots on Brian. Brian says he knows it was Jeff and says he knows what he did.

Thoughts: It was a nonsensical segment. It felt like both Truth and Jeff got turned faces at times here and Bill Behrens was turned heel. Then Brian came out and further confused things. I have no clue what he was referring to with what Jeff supposedly did. I also popped for Brian doing a tug of war with a fan for a chair which did not seem planned. This was a mess.

Kid Kash, Shark Boy & Slim J vs. The Amazing Red & The SAT (Joel Maximo & Jose Maximo)

J looks so young here.

Kash and Jose lock up. They trade hammerlocks. Kash hiptosses him then aarmdrags him. Jose hiptosses him and they trade armdrags. They then stand off and Kash slpas him. Jose slaps him back.

Kash trips Joel then shoulders him over. Joel flips him with his feet. Joel is flipped over the top and Kash dropkicks him. Kash then slingshot headscissors him outside.

Jose topes Kash outside then Shark tope con hilos Joel. J and Red go at it. J headsicssors him. J then top rope moonsaults onto The SAT outside. Red then tope con hilos onto J and Shark. Kash then springboard flip dives out.

Kash slingshot legdrops Jose for 2. Kash slams him then drops J onto him. J misses a corkscrew SSP. J takes a double stomp. Red tries to jump off of J onto Kash but slips and kind of la silla's him. The SAT do a double team submission with a high crab and camel clutch. Red then basement dropkicks J on the bottom of that hold.

Red boots J out of the corner. J walks up the buckles and twisting enzugiri's Red. J slams Red. Kash flips J onto Red. Kash drops Red then elbow drops him for 2.

Red and Kash go up top. Kash hits a nasty looking top rope exploder for 2. J step up kicks Red from behind. J then misses a phoenix splash and faceplants on the mat. J, Red and Shark are thrown into each other.

Kash double jump flying headscissors Joel. Kash then hits a nice tornado ddt for 2. Red facekicks Kash out of the corner then 2nd rope twisting flatliners him for 2. Shark hits a diamond dust on Red for 2.

Kash hits a nasty looking jay driller on Red but Jose hits a top rope legdrop on Kash to break the pin. J twisting neckbreakers Jose. J gets crotched up top. Joel hits a nasty beach break on Red. J takes a double team spanish fly off the top. Jose dives out and Red hits a corkscrew moonsault legdrop on J to win.

Thoughts:
As always with this show, the X-Division guys steal the show and that's what happened here. Yes, it was a spotfest and no the selling wasn't the best, but I liked it and it really came off well compared to the last segment. It was a high flying fast paced match with lots of cool moves and two botches. I thought everyone came off well here and it continues to be hard to understand why TNA wants to focus on Attitude Era stuff instead of the X-Division which always gets over more. It was a good match with lots of highlights.

We see the caged dancers.

The Dupps are interviewed. Goldilocks threatens them and says she isn't comfortable with this. Stan says they defended her on Disco's show last week and says he thinks there's something between them. Stan then gets hit in the crotch as he motions it towards her. We are in front of an outhouse here. Bo says they want to start their their own show called Holy Sh!tter. They open the outhouse and it smells. Goldi asks if something died there. Stand said his grandma died in a rocking chair but the smell was preserved in there. Bo makes a poop joke and that's the end of it.

Thoughts:
I have no idea what this was other than some attempt at grossing out people.

Bruce comes out wearing a dress and the Miss TNA sash. He says he's more of a woman than any woman in the world, including Tenay's wife. He says the ho-bags can only dream of having his beauty. Stan says all the married man are fantasizing about him. He says he's just too hot. He issues an open challenge and says you need more than one tooth to fight him. He calls out the women in the crowd. Jeremy Borash makes some fan sign a release form.

Miss TNA Title - Bruce (c) vs. ?

The woman spears Bruce then slams her. The woman then does a legdrop. The woman clubs Bruce. Bruce is thrown out and the woman slaps Bruce on the floor.

The woman stops Bruce from leaving then slams him. Bruce then cradles her.

Thoughts: I don't know what this was. It didn't put Bruce over but the woman was impressive. She was able to throw him around easy and moved well for her size. They should have atleast named her.

Jeff Jarrett is interviewed. He says he didn't do nothing to Brian Lawler. He says he will deal with him on his own time. He says he was forced to be Truth's partner tonight. He says Truth is wearing his belt. He says he ain't taking crap from nobody.

Jeff then goes to the toilet and finds Bill Behrens with his pants down. He throws him into the wall and boots him. Low-Ki then walks up to Jeff and Jeff walks away.

Bo Dupp runs into a midget and says they will settle this in the ring.

Last Man Standing Match - Don Harris vs. Malice

Mal hits punches and takes a black hole slam. Don chairs him in the head. Don hits another brutal chair shot to the head. Mal throws powder at Don but doesn't really seem to hit him. Mal lariats him over the top and Mal is now bleeding.

Mal grabs more powder and throws it at Don. Mal hits a powdered filled chair shot on Don. Mal boots him and sends him into the rails. Mal throws Don off the stage into a rail.

Mal grabs a chain but is lariated before he can use it.  Don lariats him with a chain. Mal clubs on him. Don boots a chair into his face. Don sets up a table and hits punches. Mal powerbombs Don.

Don ddt's him. Mal 2nd rope backdrops him through a table but Mal is the one who goes through it.

Thoughts: This was the infamous match with Don wearing an SS shirt. The selling wasn't the best in this but I did like it. It was a heavyweight brawl and they wrestled like they had issues with each other. They hit some hard chair shots here as well. I don't think Mal losing again is a good thing though since he's one of their younger prospects and Don is at the end of his career.

They fist bump after.

Goldilocks interviews The Dupps in the back. Stan is afraid of midgets. Goldi finds it amusing but Stan says it is not. He says he was taken to see oompa-loompa's as a kid and freaks out. Bo says he will take care of everything. He says all Stan has to do is go sit down at ringside and he will take care of the rest.

The Dupp Cup - Bo Dupp (c) vs Teo

Bo has a spittoon with him and a horse on a stick. Stan has a board.

Teo rams the 2nd rope into Bo's crotch then he hits Borash in the crotch. Teo now has 2.5 points. Teo hits Bo with a trash can and gets another point. He then chairs him and is up to 4.5 points. Bo pulls his pants down and Teo hits him in the crotch with the horse on the stick.

Teo chases Stan around outside and they say Stan now has -5 points for running like a pussy. Bo legdrops Teo and grabs weapons. Bo hits Teo with a pan to go to -4 then to -3 with a toilet seat. Bo chairs him to go to -2.

Stan gives Bo a board, but he gave it to a fan first so now a point can be garnered off of it. Teo is thrown into the board and Bo is now at -1 points. Stan gooses Don West and now they are 3.5 points. Stan tries to mess with the ticket lady for points but she hits him with a broom.

An outhouse is on the stage. Puppet appears out ofit and hits Stan with a kendo stick. Teo puts Bo's head in the toilet and gets enough points to win.

Thoughts: It was more amusing last week. This was all comedy and seeing Bo's butt was something I could have lived without. At least they kept this one short. This wasn't good.

Elix Skipper comes out. He tells Monty Brown this is his house. He says Monty doesn't belong here as he didn't give him permission. Elix begs him to come out..

Detroit Street Fight - Elix Skipper vs Monty Brown

Elix waits for him on the stage but is nailed from behind.
MB pounds on him on the stage then throws him down it. MB gorilla presses him into the ring. MB then stomps on him. MB hangs him with a shirt. MB comes off the apron and is hit in the gut. Elix chokes him with a chain.

Elix hits him with a trash can lid several times. MB misses a crossbody and goes out. Elix hits MB with a trash can then corkscrew plancha's the can onto him outside. Elix hits him with a stop sign. MB punches the sign into his face. MB hits a botched spinning pendulum slam.

MB powerbombs him onto a trash can and wins.

Thoughts: It was all hardcore wrestling here with nothing but weapons. It was fine for what it was.

Goldi interviews The Flying Elvises. Jorge says there's mixed emotions but says the armband they are wearing is for the 25th anniversary of the passing of Elvis. Jorge says they are all pros and are given the same opportunity tonight. Jorge says they need to step up. Jimmy says they are caught in the trap and asks what would king do? Sonny interrupts them.

Sonny says the king died on the toilet. He says this team has been about one thing only - Sonny Siaki. He says he's the heartbeat and bloodline of the team and is The Flying Elvises. Sonny says they are paying tribute to a pill-popper whose daughter is married more times than Elvis will roll over into his grave. Sonny says if you wanna look up to someone, worship the ground of Sonny Siaki. Sonny then says, "Sonny has left the interview".

Thoughts: This was a really stupid interview. If Sonny feels this way about Elvis, why is he dressed like him and doing a gimmick based on him?

TNA X-Division Title Elimination Match - Low-Ki (c) vs Sonny Siaki vs Jorge Estrada vs Jimmy Yang

Sonny tries to throw Ki but Ki lands on his feet. Sonny pushes him over and is upkicked. Ki hits chops and rolling koppo kicks him. Ki is powerbombed for 2. JE running ssp's Ki for 2. JE flipping fireman's carries Ki. Ki gets his knees up on JE's asai moonsault.

Ki hits chest kicks on JE. Ki high kicks JE then dragon sleepers him on the ropes. Ki takes an asai moonsault for 2 when Sonny pulls JE off the pin. Yang flying knees Ki. Yang 2nd rope spinning heel kicks him.

Yang and Ki trade. Yang hanging headscissors Ki on the ropes. Yang sleepers Ki then Ki backdrops him. JE tags himself in against Yang. Yang shoulders him over then JE dropkicks him out. JE 2nd rope corkscrew sentons him outside.

JE tornado ddt's Yang but Yang headflips out. Yang dropkicks him. Yang crabs him and falls back and they say JE submitted. Jorge Estrada is eliminated.

Ki hits a mongolian chop on Yang. Yang lariats him. Yang hits a top rope dropkick for 2. Yang backbreakers JE. Sonny trips Yang on the ropes. Ki hits a ki krusher on Yang pins him. Jimmy Yang is eliminated.

Sonny hits Ki from behind. Sonny pop-up samoan drops Ki for 2. Sonny lariats Ki and Ki does a great corkscrew bump for it. Ki hits punches on Sonny. Ki springboard kicks him. Ki hits kicks to the chest. Sonny uppercuts him.

Yang hits Sonny from behind as he runs the ropes and Ki rolls up Sonny for the pin.

Thoughts
: They missed Yang costing Sonny the match here which was a problem. This was mostly Sonny screwing over his partners here before being put down. It wasn't that great or anything but there were some highlights.

Jerry Lynn is interviewed in the parking lot and in his car. Lynn says they are professionals and he and AJ will get the job done for the tag titles tonight. Lynn gets out of the car and nails AJ from behind. He bangs AJ's head off a bath tub and hits him. He says not to mess with him again and says it's a matter of respect. He then hits AJ with a wooden sign.

Disco's Jive Talkin'

Disco says he doesn't have a wrestler as a guest. He says he has a movie star as a guest and brings out Dean Baldwin. Dean says he loves it here. Disco asks about Goldi and Dean says he knows plenty about her. Dean says he has a film project and he's doing research for it. He says it's called "Urban Hearthrob". He says Frank Stallone and Carrot Top are in it. He says he also needs to say a word for Jason Priestley. He says his brothers won't be in this. Disco asks about his brother Alex and his wife Kim.

Brian Lawler comes out. He says he doesn't give a sh!t about him or this show. He says he cares about Jeff Jarrett. Dean interrupts him and asks him what his name and credentials are. He says Brian wants an autograph, doesn't he? Dean tells him to beat up. Brian then nails him with a shot. He throws him into the couch and destroys the set. He then calls for security.

Disco says Brian ruined the show and says he will have another celeb next week.

Thoughts: This was terrible just like it was last time. It accomplished nothing.

Brian Lawler is kicked out of the arena by Don Harris.

Goldilocks interviews The Dupp's. Stan says he's not coming back to the NWA. Bo says they gotta win The Dupp Cup back. Stan then leaves. Bo asks what does he do now? Goldi says, "he's your brother" and Bo says, "thank you for caring".

NWA World Tag Team Title Match - AJ Styles & Jerry Lynn (c) vs. Jeff Jarrett & Ron Killings

Lynn comes out alone and is beat up 2 on 1. Lynn takes a double back elbow. Ron stomps on Lynn. Lynn takes a double suplex. AJ comes out and hits shots on JJ and then enzugiri's Truth. Lynn hits JJ when AJ ducks. Lynn slingshot plancha's Truth. AJ dropkicks JJ.

AJ slingshot corkscrew splashes JJ. AJ asai moonsaults JJ outside. Truth misses a jumping side kick on Lynn and goes into the ropes. JJ drops AJ throat first on the rails outside. Lynn monkey flips Truth and stomps him. JJ is sent into the rails. Lynn 2nd rope bulldogs Truth for 2.

AJ lariats JJ then Lynn ducks. AJ tries to asai moonsault but goes over Lynn. JJ leg lariats Lynn on the ropes then stomps him. JJ sitout slams Lynn for 2. Truth drops Lynn chest first.

Lynn forearms and boots Truth. Lynn goes up and over with a sunset flip for 2. Truth low blows Lynn then scissors kicks him. JJ knees Lynn in the gut. Lynn sleepers JJ then JJ sleepers Lynn. Lynn kneebreakers JJ then figure fours him.

Truth slams Lynn. Lynn hits punches. Truth splits out of a lariat then hits a leg lariat. Lynn hits a tornado ddt on Truth. AJ hits kicks and chops on JJ then spin kicks him. AJ its kicks to the body then rewind kicks him. AJ goes for the styles clash but Truth breaks it up. JJ is tripped by Lynn into an AJ standing swanton for 2.

AJ slips on a springboard on Truth. AJ tries to spear JJ but nails the ref on accident. Lynn reverse ddt's JJ. Lynn hits a cradle piledriver on Truth. JJ knees Lynn in the gut and hits the stroke. AJ hits a spiral tap on Truth. JJ and AJJ then both pick up pins at the same time as a second ref comes down. The refs then argue over who won.

Thoughts: AJ had a bad night here as he had a few botches. It was a weird dynamic with AJ and Lynn not getting along but having to work together against two heels. The crowd was also interested in cheering Truth which further messed things up. At least it got time and was a decent effort.

Bob Armstrong comes out and says the titles will be held up until further notice. Bob says Truth has a big problem as he has to defend his title against Monty Brown next week. Bob then says AJ will fight Lynn for an X-Division Title shot next week. Lynn asks for a falls count anywhere match. AJ says let's have a No DQ match (like falls count anywhere isn't No DQ). Bob says they can have a 2 out of 3 falls match with one being No DQ, one being falls count anywhere and the last fall being an iron man match.

JJ complains and says what about Jeff Jarrett? Bob says he has a surprise for him next week. He says Jeff better lace his boots up tight as he's in for a bumpy ride. JJ then takes the NWA Tag Title with him and Bob runs after him to the back.

Thoughts
: The 2/3 Falls match sounds stupid with the 3rd fall being a 10 minute iron man match.

The announcers talk and Don West hypes up next week's show. Don does a great job as usual.

We cut to the back. Jeff Jarrett argues with Bob Armstrong. Brian Lawler grabs JJ by the throat. He says he knows what he did and he will kill him.

Overall thoughts: We had a bad segment to start things. I liked the opener. The Miss TNA stuff as bad as usual as was the stuff with The Dupp's and Disco's segment. I thought Harris/Malice was fine. The main wasn't perfect but it was okay enough. The X-Title match had some highlights to it and Brown/Skipper was okay. As usual with this show, you get the bad Russo stuff, a decent heavyweight bout and some good X-Division action. The bad stuff negated the good stuff here though and I'd give this one a 4 out of 10. I wouldn't recommend it.
