WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XXXVIII 1/25/2025

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XXXVIII 1/25/2025

The last SNME is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/12/wwe-saturday-nights-main-event-xxxvii.html

Michael Cole and Pat McAfee are on commentary

They screwed up and turned the Spanish commentary on. Everything in the first 6 minutes or so was in Spanish.

Joe Tessitore and Jesse Ventura talked to open the show. You could kind of hear them but the Spanish commentary talked over them. WWE has had a bunch of audio and video issues lately and none of this ever happened when Vince ran things.

Women's Title - Rhea Ripley (c) vs Nia Jax

They had Lillian Garcia do announcements with mics that dropped from that air with a logo on them like they used to do in the 70's at MSG.

Nia headbutts Rhea during intros. Rhea dropkicks her and hits forearms. Rhea ddt's her then cannonballs her off the apron. Nia hits a pop-up headbutt and corner splashes her. Nia 2nd rope samoan drops her for 2.

We go to break and return. Rhe knees hr in the face and lariats her. Nia blocks a springboard hurricanrana and Rhea hits a code red off of it. Nia samoan drops her. Nia hits a 2nd rope legdrop for 2. Nia is caught on the ropes and takes a powerbomb. Rhea tries to get a reverse cloverleaf on her but Nia knocks her off.

Nia corner uranage's her. Nia gets pushed to the apron and then down to the floor. Rhea hits a top rope plancha on Nia.

Rhea goes for riptide but Nia lands on her. Nia hits a banzai drop. Nia goes up on the buckles again and Rhea electric chair drops her. Rhea hits a high kick then hits a riptide and wins.

Thoughts: It was a bit rushed but it was all action here and I liked the match. It always fun to see the two girl heavies go at it and they both got slammed around here. It was a good match and Rhea won as expected.

Alundra Blayze is in the front row and looks like Stephanie McMahon. Mark Henry is also there.

WWE Intercontinental Title - Bron Breakker (c) vs Sheamus

Jesse Ventura is on commentary for this one. Jesse says Bron is a Steiner and 2 + 2 = 5.

Bron backs Sheamus up in the corner and lets go. Sheamus lariats him and hits shots in the corner. Sheamus lariats him. Bron overhead suplexes Sheamus. Bron runs the ropes fast and lariats Sheamus out. Bron runs the outside of the ring, gets caught and is lawn darted into the time keepers seat.

Sheamus hits a top rope diving lariat for 2. Bron is knocked off the apron. Sheamus jumps off the steps and is hit with a spear in mid-air. We go to break and return. They trade shots. Bron hits a fireman's carry gutbuster twice. Bron slaps him and Sheamus wants more.

Sheamus hits shots then pumping knees him for 2. Sheamus clubs Bron's chest on the apron. Sheamus hits a razor's edge for 2. Bron gorilla press slams Sheamus for 2.

Sheamus sits up top, Bron walks up the buckles and hurricanrana's him. Sheamus pump kicks Bron for 2. They fight more and Bron spears him for the win.

Thoughts
: It was a hard hitting heavyweight match as expected. It wasn't great but it was what you want and I liked it. It needed a bit more time but time is sadly always limited on SNME. Jesse claimed the ref had counted three at one point for Sheamus. Sheamus losing continues his story of him being unable to win the IC Title.

Ted Dibiase, Dory Funk Jr. and Jim Duggan are at the show.

Shawn Michaels hosts a contract signing between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens for the ladder match at The Royal Rumble. He said he has been given one job and it's to get the signatures of both men. He says it's happening tonight and Aldis couldn't be trusted to do it.

KO has a "Cody Sucks Eggs' shirt on. Cody and KO stare down as Shawn talks about needing their signatures. Cody signs it. KO says he got p!ssed at Cody saying KO takes the easy way out. KO says he could have worked his leg at Bash at Berlin but didn't because he wanted to win the right way. He said he also stayed here while Cody quit.

Cody says he's not here to talk about the past. He says he's done worrying about KO and is worried about who he defends against at Mania. He tells him to sign the contract. KO says Cody isn't done worrying about him. He says he will shut everyone up at The Rumble. He says he's the rightful champ.

KO says Cody's entrances and pyro come to him when he wins. He says he will take it from Cody. Shawn says KO sounds jealous. KO says Shawn quit like Cody did too when things got tough here. KO says Shawn is jealous as he makes the title mean more than Shawn did. KO says he will give everyone a champ they can be proud of and not one who loses his smile. He then signs the contract.

They both put their titles on the hanger. Shawn wishes both good luck. KO cheap shots Cody over Shawn. Shawn tells him to stop. Cody saves Shawn from a shot from KO then Shawn superkicks KO. KO goes out in pain.

We get the same Fatu vs Braun video we got on SD this week.

Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu walk in the back. Fatu says Braun never faced anyone like him and says he better get in where he fits in. He says he'll beat him from post to post from coast to coast and yells "Fatu".

Braun Strowman vs Jacob Fatu

Braun throws him off the lock up then shoulders him over. Braun chokes him and gets hit. Braun back elbows him. Braun lariats him over the top. Fatu pulls Braun over the top. We go to break and return.

Braun hits a side slam then running facekicks him. Braun throws him across and out of the ring. Braun then runs around the ring and shoulders him over into the rails. Braun punches Fatu over the commentary table on the 2nd run around. He then runs around again and is samoan dropped on the commentary table.

Braun is sent into the steps. Fatu hits corner hip attacks. Fatu throws the ref out and hits more corner hip attacks and the ref DQ's Fatu.

Thoughts: I was surprised we didn't get a finish here. The finish was a beat weak but it means we probably get a rematch which would be good.

Fatu throws a chair in after. Fatu throws a chair at security. Security, officials and Aldis then try to stop Fatu. Fatu hits a double jump moonsault on Braun. Fatu then hits 2 more as security tries to stop him.

Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard are at ringside.

Michael Cole and Pat McAfee talk about Mean Gene Okerlund.

Jesse Ventura and Joe Tessitore talk. Jesse says it's getting personal around here ans he never saw the passion we see tonight.

World Heavyweight Title - Gunther (c) vs Jey Uso

Gunther comes in through the crowd like usual. Gunther running boots him to start. They trade shots. Gun chops him. Jey hits corner punches. Jey is on the top rope and Gun chops him down.

We go to break and return. Gunther lariats him and twists his neck with his feet. Gunther slams him. Jey hits forearms and takes chops. Jey is sent into the buckles then Gunther knee drops him. Gunther facelocks him. They trade more shots. Jey samoan drops him. Gunther shot gun dropkicks him then hits a powerbomb for 2. Jey lays on the apron and is stomped.

We go to break and return. They trade forearms. Gunther facekicks him. Jey spin kicks him in the ribs and is german suplexed. Jey superkicks him for 2. Gunther misses a dropkick and takes a corner hip attack for 2. Jey is stuck up top but ends up hitting a running sitout powerbomb on Gunther for 2.

Jey hurricanrana's him then hits a spear for 2. Jey superkicks him then hits a spear. Jey hits a top rope splash on Gunther for 2. Jey goes for a spear and is powerbombed twice. Gunther then gets the pin.

Thoughts:
It got cut up by 2 breaks so it's hard to know what we missed. I liked what we got as it was short and compact but it was nothing too memorable. Jey had one of his better outings here and matched up better with Gunther than I thought. Jey lost here as expected.

Overall thoughts:
It was a good show. Like the last SNME, the matches were shorter and cut up by breaks. However, the matches were action packed with no real boring moments. I liked the main best but I had no issue with any of the match here. I do wish they didn't have the audio issues early on as it was really hard to watch and got things off to a poor start. I'd give this one a 7 out of 10. I'd give it a higher rating, but there were a lot of breaks in this one and nothing was memorable. I liked it and thought it was an easy watch but it wasn't must see.
