Ring of Honor TV Episode #498 4/3/2021

Ring of Honor TV Episode #497 4/3/2021

Quinn McKay welcomes us to the show and talks about the matches as usual.

We are shown clips of last week's gauntlet final of Fred Yehi vs Wheeler Yuta, with Yehi beating Yuta with the Koji Clutch. Quinn then interviews Yehi. Yehi said it was an embarassment to hack to shake Draper's hand after he slapped him in their last match. Yehi was happy to win the first ever pure rules gauntlet and said he was in the business of breaking people.

Brian Johnson does a promo with the typical spiel about how much he loves wrestling, then says he hates Danhausen. BJ  said history remembers the winners. He said he isn't a student of the game, but he is a professor of wrestling and should have a degree in it. He said he is taking Danhausen to detention, not to school and said he an equal opportunity @sswhooper and should give him a diploma when he beats him up.

Danhausen does a promo. He said BJ cheated in their last match and doesn't get why he is facing him when he beat him before. Danhausen said he must beat him to get more money. Not a fan of Danhausen at all. He really comes off as the "I like turtles" kid.

Brian Johnson vs Danhausen

Mark Briscoe is on commentary with Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman. These two are 1-1 against each other. Brian asks for the ref to get rid of Danhausen's various things since he used them against him last time. BJ yells at Dan in the corner and puts on a headscissors.

They trade holds then shoulder blocks. Dan takes a stun gun and BJ stomps him. BJ hangs his body over the top buckle then cutters him. He drops his leg over Dan on the ropes and the ref tells them to get off the ropes. BJ then goes to the apron and throws him off the ropes and asks if the ref Todd Sinclair is happy? BJ slaps him and says he "owns his @ss". He gets nobody in the corner and on the rebound, Dan german suplexes him as we go to break. Mark calls it a "snap germanhausen".

We return from break with the two exchanging punches. Dan hits a release northern lights suplex and Dan hits a slingshot into a german. BJ gets thrown over the top rope then Dan hits a bad looking hurricanrana off the apron. The announcers have a blast ending every move name in "hausen". BJ pokes Dan in the eye, then Sinclair goes down after BJ accidentally kicks him in the head.

Sinclair comes back to and BJ tries to pin Dan with his feet on the ropes but gets caught. BJ's leg is hurting as he argues with the ref, then he sneaks in a low blow on Dan. BJ then hits a twisting facebuster for the win at 9:23. I wasn't really a fan of this. We missed a decent portion of the match due to the commercial plus there was a ton of shenanigans.

BJ gets on the mic after. He said "it's about d@mn time" that he got a mic. He said we "will enter a meccade (His nickname is the Mecca) of excellence for Brian Johnson". He said he is putting the whole roster on notice.
Brian starts yelling at Mark Briscoe on commentary and Mark tells him to go away, and says Brian doesn't want that.

Jonathan Gresham does a promo and announces him for Jay Lethal for the pure title at the 500th episode. Jay said it will be history in the making and said it is time to figure out who the best wrestler is.

LSG does a promo. He said he gets asked why he goes for the TV title and he said it's because people who built a legacy here won that first. He said that's the launchpad he needs. He talks about their match at Bound by Honor and said this is a new opportunity for them to descend into greatness. LSG says he knows Eli's weaknesses and says he doesn't have the killer instinct. He said Eli won't get a TV title shot at his expense.

Eli Isom then does a promo. Eli said he proves himself against Rey Horus on ROH TV recently. He said LSG knows his game but he does too. He said he is not the same kid LSG wrestled before and said he is here to prove a point. He said that LSG thinks that younger wrestlers have to go through him and LSG says let's get it on. He said they are both just one win from getting into TV title contention.

Eli Isom vs LSG

They said this match was supposed to happen already but Eli didn't pass covid contract tracing and it was cancelled.

We went to break and returned and we have about 21 minutes for this. LSG pushes Eli in the corner but Eli pushes back. Eli is popped up in the corner then armdrags LSG down. Eli goes to springboard in the corner but gets a face kick and falls to the floor. LSG talks trash to him and says he will show him why doing things the right way doesn't work. They trade chops.

LSG drops an elbow on the back of his head and hits a flipping neckbreaker as we go to a 2nd break here. We return with LSG in control still. Eli hits a neckbreaker after escaping a cravate. They trade forearms and Eli deadlift suplexes him overhead. Eli hits a deep six and LSG rolls out. Eli hits an inside to outside moonsault off the second rope then hits a straightjacket german for 2.

LSG hits another deep six bu turns it into a body first slam. He then does a double underhook twisting drop and we go to a 3rd commercial during this. Back from break and LSG is on the top rope. LSG crossbodies him but Lei rolls through then hits a schwein for 2. Eli's mouth is busted open. LSG is on the apron and Eli spears him to the floor which is a tough bump for both.

They slap each other on the floor and Eli barely gets in the ring in time. They trade some forearms and Eli counters a starjammer, then hits a brainbuster for the win at 15:15.

The match wasn't that great until the spear to the outside spot. That added some interest to the match and I had already invested 13 minutes or so into it by that point so I wanted to know who would win. It wasn't great, but the match being longer helped it out and ended it on a good note.

Mark Briscoe did a promo. He said he turned 17 when he started with ROH and was happy they almost hit 500 episodes. He said he is fighting his brother Jay Briscoe for the 500th episode and said he hopes Jay is ready to go. Mark said "let's get at it, baby" and yelled "arghhhhh".

Jay Briscoe then did a promo. He said may the best man win between him and Mark. He said it might get bloody and nasty but he will be happy to shake his hand after he whooped his @ss.

As always, it's hard not to enjoy a Briscoe Brothers promo.

Overall thoughts: This was an unusual episode like last week. They didn't talk about the 19th Anniversary show at all, probably because this was filmed before it happened. Most of the people on that show weren't involved or even mentioned here, which is most of ROH's best talent. I'm not a Danhausen fan and the main really didn't need to go 15, though the length did make you care about who won.
