AEW Continental Challenge Cup First Round Match - Claudio Castagnoli vs Ace Austin

This is the first Continental Cup match ever. 

They lock up and CC fireman's carry takeovers him. CC stomps him. Ace armdrags him then CC blocks his armdrag. CC slams him. CC misses a corner euro and knees him in the gut. Ace trips and kicks CC in the back. Ace dropkicks him and death valley drivers him for 2. Ace's slingshot plancha is caught outside and CC drops him face first on the rail. 

Ace is thrown into the rails. CC double axe handles him off the apron. Ace's back is rammed into the apron. Ace is popped up to the apron. He handstands on it and knees CC in the face. Ace slingshot plancha's CC over the top rope. We go to PiP break and return.

CC euros Ace then chinlocks him. CC running euros him for 2. Ace throws CC out. Ace dropkicks CC in the ring. Ace backdrops him and legdrops him. Ace top rope diving headscissors him. Ace fosbury flops him outside. Ace top rope diving guillotine legdrops him. 

Ace sunset flips him. CC blocks a helicopter kick with a euro for 2. Ace does a headscissors him on him off a giant swing attempt. Ace victory rolls him but CC holds on and drops him down backwards from his shoulder. 

Ace spin kicks CC in the face. CC pop up euros Ace and pins him.

Thoughts: It was an alright bout here. Ace did his usual offense and lost as expected. Ace flew and CC knocked him down. It got enough time to play out and I had no real issues with this.

We get a Motor City Machine Guns video. They say they are here and are amongst the greatest tag division of all time. They say only the strong survive and everyone else is in their sights.

The Brawling Birds (Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor) vs Vertvixen and Viva Van

All 4 trade shots to start. Vert is chopped in the corner. Vert and Van take double team double chops. Vert takes a pop up atomic drop. Alex pounds on Vert and Jamie running boots Vert. Jamie double chops Vert. Vert upkicks her and 2nd rope head kicks her. Van top rope side splashes Jamie for 2.

Jamie double lariats her opponents. Alex hits offense on her opponents and back body drops Vert. Alex blue thunders Van and throws her out. Jamie headbutts Vert. Vert takes a sandwich lariat then a hart attack. Jamie pins Vert.

Thoughts: It was a quick squash here. It wasn't the cleanest but it was entertaining enough. The Birds won as expected.

Divine Dominion's music hits after. Dominion attacks The Birds from behind in the ring. The Birds are thrown out. Alex is double spinebustered on the timekeeper's table.

Darby Allin does a video on Kevin Knight. He says he wants him to remember that Kevin started this when he was on the stretcher. He says Kevin and everyone forgot what he's capable of. He challenges him to a fall's count anywhere match at Wembley for the TNT Title.

Matt Sydal does an inset promo. He says he thought he would never wrestle again but he got his feet fixed and now he can kick OC's @ss with both feet. He says he came here to win the cup. 

AEW Continental Challenge Cup First Round Match - Orange Cassidy vs Matt Sydal

They lock up. OC flips him and side headlocks him. OC snapmares him and poses while holding him. Matt tries pins then poses back at him. OC flying armdrags him then Matt does the same. Matt legsweeps him and OC rolls him up for 2. 

OC misses a rare standing moonsault. Matt then standing moonsaults him for 2. Matt corner lariats him. They fight on the buckles and both knock each other down to the floor. We go to PiP break and return.

OC clubs on him on the buckles. Matt flying headscissors him. Matt hits chest kicks and brazilian kicks him down. Matt top rope diving meteora's him for 2. Matt misses a corner splash and his head is banged off the buckles. Matt top rope diving elbows him and stunners him off a suplex attempt. OC rolls him up for 2. 

OC michinoku drivers him for 2. Matt hits a kick combo on him. OC puts his hands in his pockets and he dropkicks Matt out. OC topes Matt. OC spinning ddt's Matt for 2. Matt rolls him up for 2 and jumping knees him. Matt misses a top rope SSP. OC beachbreakers him and pins him.

Thoughts: I didn't like OC's screwing around here. This is a tournament match and he didn't take it super seriously while still winning. It was nice to see Sydal again after a long layoff. The match was fine but OC's screwing around hurt it.

Jon Moxley tells Claudio he's a machine in the back. Mox says he's naked without the Continental Title. He says he's ripe for the pickings. He says he has a soft spot for Jack Perry but says he's on the wrong team tonight. He says he has a wild hair on his @ss for The Bang Bang Gang. He says it'll be a bad night for him and his friends. CC says, "against the world".

The Rascalz (Zachary Wentz and Wes Lee) vs Aaron Solo and Stephen Fuerte

Solo and Zach go at it. Zach cutters Solo. Solo takes a double back elbow then a step up enzugiri + german combo. SF takes corner attacks. Wes catapults SF into a Zach superkick to the gut. Zach then double stomps SF off the buckles. Zach is pushed into a standing ssp on SF. SF is pinned.

Thoughts: It was a short squash with The Rascalz winning as expected. Solo got a chant from the crowd.

Wes Lee says they won last time they were here and says no one knows about being a mile high like them. Zach says they prove time and time again that they belong in AEW. Wes says AEW is where the best wrestle. Wes says they are one of the best teams and Reed says they can handle it in singles action. Reed says he's facing Mike Bailey tonight. He says he's dressed and ready and asks if they can do this right now. Zach tells Mike to get this action and smoke.

Mike Bailey vs Myron Reed

Mike side headlock takeovers Reed. They sweep each other. Reed rolls over him and they armdrag each other. They catch each other's kicks then shake hands. 

Reed bridges out of a kick. Mike kicks away a kick and hits a kick combo on him. Reed legdrops him over the 2nd rope. Reed slingshot sunset flips him then jumps into a leg lariat. Reed springboard dropkicks him. Reed slides out and Mike top rope moonsaults him outside. 

We go to break and return. They trade forearms on the apron. Mike hits chest kicks and Reed kicks back. Reed is swept on the apron and Mike misses a standing moonsault double knee on the apron. Reed tries to flying cutter Mike off the apron but Mike lands on his feet. Mike 2nd rope corkscrew moonsaults Reed outside.

Mike jumps off the top and holds his knee. Reed enzugiri's him from the apron. Mike enzugiri's Reed while he's up top. Mike top rope hurricanrana's him down. Reed kips down out of a corkscrew kick and cutters him. Mike 2nd rope ssp's and Reed cutters him. Reed tope con hilos out near the post. 

Reed misses a top rope 450. Reed runs at him and Mike hits a flipping slam off of it. Mike pins him.

Thoughts: Mike's selling of the leg could have been better but this was an okay match. It was mostly all flying and they didn't do the dangerous head-dropping moves with it that generally bring those kinds of matches down. Reed continues to stand out on Collision and it's getting harder for them to justify not pushing him while so many similar guys like him get pushed. 

The Dogs do a promo. Clark talks about their recent wins over The Bang Bang Gang. Clark says Finlay will beat the tar out of Jay on Dynamite. Finlay says Jay is basically on the shelf and he can't beat him, or even just survive. Finlay says he could face anyone in the Continental Cup. He says he doesn't care who it is. Finlay says all friendships are dead and anything goes when the bell rings. They say it doesn't matter who you are, The Dogs are off the chain and says they let the dogs out.

Persephone and Shida do a promo. Pers says Maya World's luck runs out and says her wins over them were flukes. Shida says she will right the wrongs from Redemption when she beats Maya. She says still the best is Shida.

Hikaru Shida and Persephone vs Maya World and Hyan

Hyan shoulders Pers then seated springboard armdrags her. Hyan northern lights suplexes her for 2. Maya get double teamed and hits shots on both opponents. Maya does a headscissors + headlock takeover. Maya spinning heel kicks Pers for 2. Hyan sunset flips Pers but Pers rolls out and basement dropkicks her.

Pers is thrown out and Maya gets hit when she tries to dive on her. We go to PiP break and return. Pers chinlocks Hyan. Hyan hits her in the gut. Pers throws her down backwards. Hyan armdrags her. Maya and Shida get in. Maya flying headscissors Shida. Maya flying back splashes Shida. Shida is dropped face first on the buckles. Hyan headscissors Maya into Shida in the corner for 2.

Shida pumping knees Hyan. Pers top rope dropkicks Hyan. Shida falcon arrows Hyan for 2. Shida is held in the air for a jumping flatliner for 2. Pers boots Maya in the gut. Maya fallaway slams her. Maya then topes her. Hyan spears Shida for 2. Shida forearms Hyan and hits a dangerous looking TTD. Shida pins Hyan.

Thoughts: It had some good and bad points to it. Hyan almost got it real bad on the finish here on a botched TTD. They gave Hyan and Maya a lot of shine here but I thought it was average overall.

Kevin Knight is interviewed. He says he knows what Darby Allin wants. Kevin says he wants to talk about what he wants. He says maybe he will grant Darby's wish and make him a casualty. He says Darby would have never beaten him in Mexico if it weren't for Jericho. He says Jericho was a TV champ on this network but was never TNT champ. Kevin challenges Jericho to a TNT Title match. 

The commentators talk about Takeshita in the G1.

The Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta), PAC and Daniel Garcia) vs Jack Perry and The Bang Bang Gang (Juice Robinson, Austin Gunn and Colten Gunn)

JR = Juice Robinson, DG = Daniel Garcia 

Austin wristlocks Mox and Mox takes him down. Jack and Yuta get in. Yuta backrolls him for 2. Jack reverse monkey flips him and dropkicks him. Jack wristlocks him. Austin 2nd rope double axe handle's Yuta's arm. Juice top rope double axe handles Yuta's arm. 

Yuta bites JR's head. JR armdrags DG and hiptosses Pac. JR punches those two. JR crossbodies those two. Yuta is thrown over the top and Pac/DG are double lariated over the top together. Jack dropkicks Mox out. The Riders stall outside. We go to PiP break and return. 

Yuta elbow drops JR off the ropes. JR is beaten up while down. DG Front facelocks JG. JR is group booted in the corner. 

JR leg lariats DG. Jack comes in and hits shots on Mox. Jack flying forearms him. Mox boots Jack out of the corner. Jack and Mox double lariat each other down. Jack enzugiri's Yuta. Austin tags in, sweeps Yuta and hits natural selection on him. Austin hiptoss neckbreakers DG.

Austin ddt's Pac. Colt corner splashes Pac then eurostep neckbreakers him. Colt fameassers Yuta for 2. Colt takes running corner attacks. JR then punches The Riders one by one. JR punches DG several times and drops him. Austin swinging flatliners Pac. Yuta suplexes Austin. Colt backdrop uranage's Yuta. Mox cutters Colt and Jack superkicks Mox. Jack top rope moonsaults outside onto 3 opponents.

Colt dropkicks Yuta. Shafir tires to get in. The Dogs pull Austin crotch first into the post. Yuta low blows Colt. Yuta flying knees Colt and pins him.

Thoughts: It was an alright tag. The Riders did basic heeling. Austin was having a hot night here and did well on his comebacks. It didn't get a ton of time but I liked what we got.

Jack flying knees Yuta after and points at Mox. 

Mike Bailey does a promo. He says Grand Slam Mexico was a dream come true. He says he's grateful for all of it but he's not the International champ. He says he's locked in. He says he hears MJF is looking for opponents to qualify for the gauntlet and he wants in. Nick Wayne comes in and says he will fumble his title quest opportunity. Nick says he will beat Bandido and become the youngest ROH champ of all time. He says he will show him how to take an opportunity and run with it and get the #2 spot in the gauntlet.

We get a tribute video on Dory Funk Jr.

Shane Taylor Promotions and The Hurt Syndicate are interviewed. Shane says he knows time is money and says they want to acquire their servies and assist them in their new business venture. Shane says they will get rich and make history together. Shane then offers an envelope full of money as a show of good faith. Bobby takes it. MVP says Shane has their attention and they will be in touch.

Jack Perry and The Bang Bang Gang are in the back. Jack throws a water bottle. He says he was told to stay away from gangs as a kid. He says The Gang seems alright though. He says it's him and Mox 1v1 for the first time ever with no one else out there on Dynamite. He says all it takes is one loss and Mox is no longer the Continental champ and is out of the cup. He says he will show him what a sweet kid is all about. Juice says Yuta would have taken a 310 to Yuma if it weren't for The Dogs. Juice asks what Finlay and Clark will do without their buddies in The Continental Classic (he means The Cup). They then do the "guns up" line.

Eddie Kingston does an inset promo ahead of his match. He says he won the first Continental Classic and will now win the first Continental Cup. He says O'Doyle doesn't rule, he does (it's a line from an Adam Sandler movie).

AEW Continental Challenge Cup First Round Match - Eddie Kingston vs Jake Doyle

Jake shoves Eddie off the lock up. Eddie side headlock takeovers him. Jake shoulders him over. Jake shoulders him over. Eddie chops Jake and Jake bodyblocks him. Eddie chops Jake in the corner. Jake lariats him. Jake corner splashes him. 

Jake throws Eddie out. Jake lariats Eddie against the rails. Eddie hits punches and headbutts on him. Jake slams him for 2. Jake eye rakes him. Jake hits corner spears. Eddie hits slaps on Jake and chops him. Eddie chops Jake in the corner. 

Jake elbows Eddie in the neck then powerslams him for 2. We go to PiP break and return. Eddie boots him out of the corner then 2nd rope diving shoulderblocks him. Eddie exploders him for 2. Jake forearms him and sliding lariats him from behind. Eddie backdrops him for 2. Eddie misses a uraken. Jake sitout powerbombs him for 2. 

Jake forearms Eddie. Eddie uraken's him twice. Eddie does a stretch plum and Jake taps out.

Thoughts: It was the usual Eddie match with him doing his favorite Japanese moves. Jake brought the power and bullied Eddie around some with that. It went about as well as it was going to go and was okay, but it maybe got a little more time than it needed to get. This ran past 10:09PM. 

Overall thoughts: It was mostly all random matches here as usual. I liked all the men's matches here. The squashes were what they were and Maya World's match didn't impress. Reed/Bailey was the match of the night. We didn't get a ton of storyline developments here which isn't unusual. I'd give it a 6 out of 10 as we had a lot good wrestling. This was an okay show overall, but it didn't need to go past 10PM.
