WWE NXT 6/27/2023
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2023/06/wwe-nxt-6202023.html
I did a little bit of an abbreviated format here today.
We see Melo and Corbin arrive earlier in the day.
NXT Women's Title - Tiffany Stratton (c) vs Thea Hail
Tiff grabs an armlock and Thea backslides her. Thea rolls her up and Gulak and Dempsey come down to watch. Thea goes up and over then armdrags her. Tiff blocks an armdrag, Thea goes over her back then hits a japanese armdrag and a dropkick. Thea goes to springboard but is pulled down off the apron. Thea is pushed onto the floor then Tiff handspring, backflip elbows her. Tiff then M. Bison stomps her into the mat.
Thea reverse topes her off the bottom rope outside then Tiff hits a sky high for 2. We go to PiP break and return. Thea armwhips her into the buckles then into the mat. Thea hits double axe handles then exploders her. Thea hits the C-H-A-S-E-U stomps then back splashes her off the bottom rope. Tiff slams her and goes for a powerbomb but Thea rolls her into a kimura. Dempsey and Gulak pull the rope away from Tiff, then Thea and Duke argue with them about it. Thea taps her with a kimura but the ref doesn't see it due to Gulak. Tiff then rolls up Thea and grabs the cheap win.
It was a shorter but good match. This was maybe the best match Thea had yet and Tiff looked like a real pro out there. I think they did as good of a job as protecting Thea as they could here despite her losing and furthered her storyline some.
Gulak and Dempsey yell at Thea after. Duke tells them to stop then s beaten up by both. Gulak tells Thea to pay attention as she kicks Duke. Andre Chase then returns and comes to make the save. He beats up Gulak and Dempsey then Duke and Chase hit Chase U punches on the heels together.
Ilja Dragunov talks about being unbesiegbar. He said he embraces and becomes conflict. He said his will can't be stopped and he moves forward as he crawls.
Gallus talk in the back and say Stacks gets what is coming to him. Blade and Enofe say is their time and all their hard work pays off tonight.
Kelani Jordan introduces herself to Dana Brooke from last week. Dana says her gymnastic skills will pay off. Kelani said Dana fighting through the pain was inspiring. She said she is happy she is here in NXT and Dana says she will show her a thing or two when her leg heals up.
NXT Tag Titles - Gallus (c) vs Edris Enofe and Malik Blade
It started out well and Enofe and Blade looked good here. The first part of this was mostly good due to Enofe and Blade but tailed off in the 2nd half. Enofe botched a spot where he jumped off Coffey's back. Near the end, Stacks came out. He tried to help out Enofe and Blade but ended up uppecutting Enofe into the steps and costing them the mach.
Meta Four did a promo that was not good and was hard to understand.
The Schism had a family meeting. Dyad said they were teaming longer together than they were teaming with Dyad and seemed like they were on the verge of leaving. They argued and Ivy and The Creed's came out. They ended up making a loser leaves town match with Dyad for next week, where we know Dyad will obviously lose. This segment wasn't good at all.
We had another skit on Price and Nima, showing them playing football as kids and growing up together. I thought it was pretty generic with them doing the ghetto thug thing.
Rhea Ripley went up to Trick and Carmelo and threatened them if they thought about getting involved in Judgment Day's business again like they apparently did on Monday. I can't stand Rhea and her threatening Trick and Melo is such a burial. Why would you not have Damian Priest or the Judgment Day as a whole do that instead?
NXT Heritage Cup - Nathan Frazier vs Dragon Lee
It went 5 rounds with Frazier winning 2-1. It was what you would expect and was entertaining, but it would have been better as a normal match. These guys are all about keeping up a fast pace and doing cool moves, but there's only so much you can do when the rounds are short and when the match has to be completely stopped and resumed.
We saw clips of Gable Steveson training Eddy Thorpe, but they didn't acknowledge that Gable was Damon Kemp's brother. That came off real weird and pretty much derailed the segment due to how little sense it made.
Mustafa Ali, Wes Lee and Tyler Bate had an argument in the back. Ali acknowledged that he did slow counts and fast counts last week during the Lee/Bate match an Bate said he wanted a rematch with a normal ref. They ended up later setting up Ali vs Bate for next week. I kind of liked the segment and they did a different kind of angle here with Ali messing up counts for both guys. They never really explained why he did it of course and I thought they shouldn't have him acknowledge that he did mess up the counts as he's supposed to be a face and that's not a face move.
Mr. Stone was looking for Von Wagner. They talked about Von's surgeries as a kid and Von ran off.
Gigi Dolan vs Kiana James
It was the typical, not so special women's match. They both splatted on the floor as they were rolling around in the ring and then there was another hard bump on the floor after. Kiana went for her purse during the match and ended up taking a high kick. Gigi picked up the win. Kiana beat up Gigi after, hit her with her purse then dumped a bunch of paint on her. The paint thing really came out of nowhere without explanation and that hurt this angle.
Joe Coffey visited Tony D'Angelo in prison and said that Stacks is working with Gallus. He played a tape of Stacks saying that he's tired of being the underboss. We'll have to see where it goes, but I did like this segment and I definitely want to see what happens next here. Them having Stacks accidentally help out Gallus earlier in the show also added to this angle.
Roxanne Perez talked trash about Blair Davenport in the back on snapchat and got beaten up for it. This wasn't really a good way to make Perez come across as sympathetic. I mean, was Blair supposed to just let her talk trash?
Lyra Valkyria then dropped Jacy Jayne with a forearm in the locker room after as Jacy was complaining and namedropped her.
Schism talked in the back. Ava as usual went to bat for Joe Gacy and tried to get Dyad to trust him.
NXT Title - Carmelo Hayes (c) vs Baron Corbin
Corbin got most of the offense in here and this went too long. Some people really liked it but it didn't do much for me.
We then go to the back. Bron Breakker and Shawn Michaels are arguing in Shawn's office and Bron says nobody can control him and leaves.
Overall thoughts: My interest in this show is at a real low to the point where I didn't even really want to see this. I hope this is the end of Baron Corbin in NXT. I liked some of the developments like Andre Chase returning, Stacks possibly ratting out Tony D and I am interested to see Schism likely be broken up next week. The main didn't do it for me though, Gigi/Kiana's paint angle didn't work and the Gable Steveson/Eddy Thorpe thing didn't work either since Steveson is Kemp's brother.
