AEW Dynamite New Year's Smash Night 1 1/6/2021

AEW Dynamite New Year's Smash Night 1 1/6/2021

I reviewed last week's show with pics and gifs here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2020/12/aew-dynamite-12302020.html

SCU and The Young Bucks vs  The Acclaimed and The Hybrid 2

They showed the history of how this came to be which was a nice touch.

Caster did a rap. He said the Acclaimed were robbed last week and said they were John Cena's while The Bucks were Jannetty's. They said they would "whoop their @ss" and call them "b!tch".

They all bralwed in ring to start and the faces did double dives. The Bucks pop-upped the other into a dropkick then one of the Bucks did a run up the ropes armdrag. Then Nick of the Bucks did a run of the ropes tope con giro. Daniels went for a moonsault off the ropes but got held and it stopped. Jack Evans did a tornado kick on the apron to Daniels. The Acclaimed swept Daniels' leg, dropped an elbow then a falling kick into Daniels' face.

TH2 held Daniels up for a backdrop, then Evans springboard double stomped him. Bowens hit a blockbuster, Caster hit an elbow from the top, Evans did a flip onto Daniels then Angelico did a rolling bow and arrow with like a mandible claw in one long sequence. Daniels hit a blue thunder bomb and made the hot tag. Kaz cleared out TH2. Caster held up Kaz for double team move, but Kaz moved and Caster got nailed. Evans hit a jumping knee then a standing twisting moonsault for on Kaz. Kaz collided Bowens and Evans together and one of the Bucks did a double northern lights suplex. One of the Bucks flipped over the top to Evans on the ramp, then Caster on the floor then speared Angelico on the floor.

One of the Bucks teased a moonsault but instead dove to the floor then the Bucks hit more bang for your buck for 2. Bowens got buckle bombed and then took two enzugiri's in the corner. Kaz and one of the bucks hit a v-trigger knee. Angelico and Evans did a combo on one of the Bucks and Evans tried a 630 but the Buck got his knees up. The Bucks double superkicked all opponents. Evans for a nearfall on a backslide flip. A buck had Evans up for a Tombstone and Daniels moonsaulted into a psike tombstone for the win. There was a ton of action as you may be able to tell and by the time I typed up one spot, we were already on the next.

Kaz got on the mic and explained that the next time they lose as a tag team, they are done. Daniels said SCU has the Bucks back except when they challenge them for the tag belts.

Jon Moxley came out. His first time on tv after losing his belt due to screwjob weeks ago. You'd think he would be so mad about it that he would address it ASAP, but not Moxley.

Moxley said people expected him to be screaming and mad. But he said moaning and complaining was a waste of time. He said all he can do is grit his teeth and not back down. He said he isn't going anywhere and said he thinks beating Omega and Callis up with a crowbar would be a good response. He said the AEW title is on the line tonight though and he didn't want to ruin the credibility of it. He then said Kenny will not be safe and he get even and then some. He said he's going to be in Kenny's shadow and realize he crossed the wrong guy.

Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy were interviewed. They said Trent would be out 4-5 months. Then Miro, Kip and Ford came in. Miro said Chuck needs to step out of Trent's shadow and offered to be his friend, if he does his laundry and stuff. Chuck said about he beats up Miro next week? Miro then said, how about if he beats Chuck next week, Chuck becomes Miro's young boy and Chuck agreed, as he wanted him out of his face. Miro said that was stupid and I agree.

Jake Hager vs Wardlow

Wardlow was interviewed on an inset promo. Wardlow said the Inner Circle is his family and he will take care of them. Wardlow says Hager wanted a fight, but he's giving him a war.

Jericho on commentary said they gotta get their aggressions out on each other but they are still a team.

Hager took Wardlow down but he pounded on him a little and they got back up. Wardlow tried to leapfrog Hager but didn't go all the way over. Then Wardlow clotheslined Hager over the top. They traded punches and both clotheslined the other on the floor. This really slowed down at this point as Wardlow had control. Wardlow got whipped into the corner and did a little flip out of it then rolled into a hard corner spear. Wardlow hit a spinerbuster and threw Hager out of two suplexes. Hager hit a lariat and a body slam.

Hager tried a Vader Bomb but Wardlow stopped it. Hager was on the apron and Wardlow knocked him off of it into the rails. Wardlow did a side suplex on Hager then german suplexed him. Wardlow hit a swanton from the top but Hager didn't sell it too much as he turnes it into a choke. Wardlow then hit an F-10 which looked great and won. This wasn't good. The first half was super slow and this really only had a couple of cool spots.

Wardlow and Hager pounded fists after.

Private Party was looking for their gin and juice which Snoop Dogg just happened to bring. Hardy had a contract for the and told them not to worry about the chair from last week. They had some resquests in the contract and Hardy told them it was in there without them really reading it. Then PP signed the contracts.

They had a weigh-in for the TNT title match next week with Tony Schiavone, Brian Cage and Darby Allin. Cage weighed in at 272lbs. Darby weighed in at 170lbs, which I'm not sure if he even weighs that much.

Darby said he knows how this will end and then grabbed his skateboard and said let's get it on. As Taz talked, the lights went out and Sting's video hit.  Team Taz didn't attack Sting and said Cage will win the TNT title next week. Sting and Allin stared each other down.

We went to the back with Hager getting mad at the loss. MJF told him not to get mad and said he should be proud of himself. Hager said he almost dropped Hager but said thanks for checking up on him and he's cool.

Jurassic Express was interviewed. They said they wanted the tag titles. FTR said Marko was a loser and everyone else does his dirty work for him. He challenged them to a match next week with JB. Tully patted Marko on the head as they left. Marko isn't only small, but he's annoying and talks like a kid.

Cody Rhodes with Snoop Dogg vs Matt Sydal

Of course Cody gets the rub with Snoop entering with him. Not someone like The Acclaimed who could use it more.

Cody limbos out of a pin early. Sydal tried a flipping armdrag from the top but botched it then dropped double knees in the corner. Sydal then did it to a standing Cody on the ramp which almost hit Snoop. Sydal dropkicks Cody through the ropes and Cody accidentally hits Serpentico in the crowd. Cody put Sydal in a sharpshooter when they got back in, but Sydal hit the ropes. Snoop signalled to Cody to do something and Cody knee'd Sydal in the face then did push-ups for some reason.

Sydal did a nice twisting standing moonsault. They went up top and Cody hit a top rope Ultimo Guerrero special (reverse suplex). Cody went for a moonsault but Sydal moved then Sydal hit a jumping knee. Sydal did an SSP but Cody got his knees up and got a reverse DDT for 2. Sydal did something like a la mistica into a cobra clutch but it didn't go anywhere. Cody lariated Sydal on the ropes and both went over the top. Back in and Cody hit a disaster kick, which Sydal did a big flip for.

Sydal back jumped into a hurricanrana which looked really chereographed, then he hit a lightning spiral for 2. Cody then hit a double Cross Rhodes for the win and got jumped by Luther and Serpentico. Sydal took out Luther and Snoop did a splash off the top onto Serpentico. It wasn't the prettiest, but Snoop is old and you have to give him credit for doing that.

AEW Women's title - Hikaru Shida vs Abadon

Shida got jumped during her entrance and nailed Abadon in the head with her kendo stick. This happened before the bell rang and didn't result in a DQ or anything. They did this last week and it raises the question of why not just nail your opponent with whatever before it starts and then win easy when the bell rings.

Shida tries to do two headsprings but both look bad. She did the second as she rolled Abadon then hit her with a dropkick. Shida tried a running knee while Abadon was on the apron, but Abadon bit her leg. Shida got pulled under the ring. Abadon came out with a lot of fake blood on her mouth. Shida followed and had fake blood on her neck.

Back in the ring and Abadon hits a top rope x-factor. Shida gets her head banged off the mat then Abadon pounds on her. Abadon then does the old trapezius hold on the wound. Shida gets her head banged off the mat then Abadon does as well. Shida got on the 2nd rope and did a frogsplash to a standing Abadon on the outside. Shida then banged Abadon's head off the barricade.

Shida hit a superplex but Abadon bridged up and clotheslined Shida. Shida then did a sliding kick and won which was just stupid. A character like Abadon shouldn't be losing or be made to look weak. This match wasn't too believeable due to the neck wound. If you have a wound like that on your neck, it should probably kill you.

Tay Conti challenged Serena Deeb for the NWA Women's Title and said the Dark Order will have her back.

AEW World Title - Kenny Omega vs Rey Fenix

Death Triangle did an inset promo and Pac said Fenix is an assassin and the next champion. Pac should not be the mouthpiece for anyone since he's hard to understand. Kenny had his stupid entrance with the broom girls.

Kenny hit a standing hurricanrana early. Fenix then gave him the same thing. Fenix was on the middle rope facing the outside and hurricanrana'd Omega who was on the floor. Omega tried a tornado DDT but Fenix flipped out of it. Fenix tried to go for a springboard something but Omega chopped him and he fell to the floor.

Fenix dived over the barrier into a cutter but Omega caught him and dragon suplexed him on the floor. That probably should be it there, but they will go another 10 minutes I'm sure. Fenix was backdropped from the floor to the apron and did a flop sell for it, then was backdropped onto a barricade.

The female ref was out which I think just looks silly. Omega hit a backbreaker on Fenix. Fenix came back with a springboard reverse tope. Fenix did a double springboard into a dropkick then did a great flip tope to the outside. Fenix did a moonsault into a german which of course was only worth a 2. Fenix did a springboard double stomp to the back of Omega's head and that was also only worth a 2 count.

They then started trading chops. Fenix took a pump knee but just kipped up and superkicked Kenny. Fenix tried some spin off the top rope but Omega caught him with a knee then a v-trigger knee for 2. Rey hit a poisonrana out of an OWA and Callis distracted Fenix. Kenny then was recovered and hit a knee to Fenix. Fenix ran the ramp and did a springboard cutter for 2. Fenix hit a stiff fire thunder for another 2.

Fenix did a frog splash from the top but Omega got his knees up. Fenix did a flip from the top but Omega caught it and did a sitting double underhook piledriver. They called this the Tiger Driver '98, but you only put years after moves when they were first done and Omega's move wasn't first done in '98, so that's incorrect and I won't acknowledge it. Omega then hit a v-trigger knee for 2 and an OWA to win.

They did too much, kicked out of too much and didn't sell much or have any real story. Just very dangerous moves and kickouts.

Callis got on the mic after and Death Triangle was getting beaten up by Kingston, Butcher and Blade.

Callis told Omega to hit another OWA on Fenix, then Moxley came out and hit Omega in the stomach with a barbed wire bat.

Gallows and Anderson then came to make the save for Omega and beat up Moxley. They hit a magic killer on Moxley and stomped him. Many people came into try and help but it didn't work and Fuego del Sol got put through a table during all of it. The Bucks came out at the end and did the "Two Sweet" sign to end the show with Kenny and crew.

Overall thoughts: The show didn't drag, but I thought 3 of the matches had significant issues. I'm sure the average AEW fan will really like it, but that's not me.
