AEW Dynamite 7/12/2023

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2023/07/aew-dynamite-752023.html

Chris Jericho vs Komander

If you want to know why this is happening or why Komander is with Alex, I couldn't tell you. Jericho piefaces him and bullies him with slaps in the corner. Komander headscissors him in the corner then Komander does rope tricks into a flipping hurricanrana. Komander then tornillos him over the top. Jericho is sent into the steps. Komander springsboards and is met with a forearm. Jericho backdrops him then suplexes him.

Komander high kicks him then is hiptossed over the top. We go to PiP break and return. Komander back rolls into a headscissors and takes a double powerbomb. Komander hits la magistral and bounces off the ropes to armdrag him. Jericho lariats him then crotches him on the top. Komander walks the top rope into an ssp on Jericho. Jericho tries his springboard dropkick but misses then Komander runs the top rope into a corkscrew dive. Komander does a blind springboard phoenix splash. He comes off the top and is half caught with a codebreaker.

Komander superkicks him and tries a 450 off the ropes but is caught with a lion tamer. Jericho submits him.

It was about the best of a Komander match you are going to get with Jericho being the heel base for him and letting Komander hit some of his high spots.

Don Callis comes out after.

Don tells him, "hell of a match, kid". Don said their segment did a high rating last week and said the whole world is buzzing. Don said they were part of a faction years ago led by Bad News allen. We see video of it. Jericho says he remembers it and said he still has all of his hair and Don doesn't. Jericho said Bad News made them promise that they always stick together. Don said they didn't keep their promise and said he feels like Bad News is up there in heaven with a smile on his face at the thought of them joining up. Don said Jericho knows in his heart what Bad News would want him to do. This was a neat little segment.

Alex Marvez is knocking on Jungle Boy's car, waiting for him to get out. JB says this is an unsafe working environment and he said he is here to do his job, which is in the ring, not the parking lot. Hook then gets in his car and grabs him but he's able to fight him off. Hook tells him to "keep running, Perry" after.

Renee is in the back waiting for Don Callis. Don says Jericho is a fabulous athlete and says he will announce the 5th member of the BCC's team at Blood and Guts. Don said he's not afraid of Kenny and said he'll be out there alone, not expecting any problems.

We see Adam Cole and MJF drinking together. MJF asks why Cole isn't wearing his shirt. Cole said he lost it. Girls say hi to them and MJF says 2 for me, 2 for you. Cole said he cares about Britt then MJF says, "four more for Daddy". MJF then walks off with the girls and returns, zipping up his pants. Cole said he never lost the shirt and will put on the shirt if they do what he wants next. We then cut to them playing video games. MJF said he won't play games like a nerd then Cole tells him his AEW video game stats are good. MJF said it's more fun to play games when you have a friend with you. Cole asked if he never played a game with someone before and MJF said he didn't have friends. Cole said when they first got teamed together, he was going to blindside him and MJF said the same thing. Cole tells him he is cool and MJF agrees. MJF said they should win the tag titles because they are better than you, bay-bay. They then win the tag titles in the game and celebrate to end the segment. It was a fun segment and was a way to shill the video game.

AEW Blind Eliminator Tournament Semifinal - Darby Allin and Orange Cassidy vs Daniel Garcia and Sammy Guevara

Sammy mocks OC by putting his hands in his pockets then they trade armdrags. Sammy goes for one then OC steps aside and puts his hands in his pockets. Sammy then does his pose. OC wrestles with his hands in his pockets then Garcia nails him from behind. Darby shotgun dropkicks Garcia then side steps Sammy into a tope on Garcia.

Darby tries to springboard using Sammy but is swept on the top rope and lands.  Garcia swinging headlocks Darby and we go to PiP break. Darby flips out of Sammy's headscissors and is kicked while he tries to texas cloverleaf him. Darby code reds Sammy then Garcia rolls up Darby. OC top rope crossbodies Garcia then does a high michinoku driver for 2. Garcia sharpshooter OC then OC cutters him out of a suplex. Darby stunners him from behind then OC tornado ddt's Garcia.

Sammy high knees Darby then OC beachbreaks Sammy. OC and Garcia facekick each other at the same time then Sammy and Darby bang heads. OC is uranage'd on the apron. Sammy flying knees Darby then misses a top rope SSP. Prince Nana comes down the ramp and tells Garcia to hit OC with Darby's skateboard. Garcia and Darby fight over it, the ref takes it away then Swerve comes out and kicks Darby. Sammy then hits his GTH on Darby and wins it.

The finish was messy and I hated OC doing the usual pockets routine in a tournament match.

Sammy shakes Darby's hand after.

We see Nick Wayne in his garage and see clips of him in there. Nick talks about his dad dying and said he wrestles for him and himself. He said he has been ready to wrestle on TV for AEW his entire life and says wrestling is meant for him.

Renee is with Adam Cole, who is on the phone. Roderick Strong comes in and asks if Cole is starting to like MJF. Cole says MJF is not a half-bad guy then Cole gets a text asking him to wear their shirt. MJF says he saw Brian Cage walking in the hall and says he feels sick and can't go.

AEW Blind Eliminator Tournament Semifinal - Big Bill and Brian Cage vs MJF and Adam Cole

Cole wore the shirt with MJF. MJF walks out early against Big Bill. Cage does push-ups and has Cole do some, which are clearly designed to show us that Cole indeed does work out. MJF tries to lift Bill and hurts his back. Bill challenges MJF to do push-ups, he does, then Bill stomps him. Bill knocks Cole off the apron the ndoes push-ups to mock him.

We go to PiP break and return. Bill rips off MJF's shirt and wipes his butt with it. MJF slams Bill then fights with Cage. MJF pokes Cage in the eye and tags in Cole. Cole pump kicks Cage then eye pokes him and pump kicks him. MJF calls for the double clothesline but Cage avoids it. Big Bill then double clotheslines both opponents. Bill goes for a double chokeslam but takes double kicks to the knee and double superkicks.

Cage lifts both opponents for a fallaway slam + samoan drop. Cole superkicks Cage on the apron then does the same to Bill. MJF hits his piledriver over the middle rope on Cage then Cole hits the boom knee on Cage and wins it.

I thought it was a little much to believe Cole and MJF handling their bigger opponents so easy and Bill/Cage losing to them was obviously a joke. MJF did a great job here though and worked this absolutely perfectly. He not only played the little guy going against the big guy well but also did a good job pretending to be a face with Cole.

Cole and MJF grab the mic after. He said he is super over and makes Cole do his "Adam Cole Bay-Bay" pose. MJF says their shirts are also cool and shills them. MJF says the double clothesline is coming and the crowd even chants "double clothesline". MJF made a racial remark against Whites like he always does.

Cole said he didn't have high expectations for the team but it is working. Cole says he has expectations to win the tournament and become tag champs. MJF then says "we are better than you, bay-bay".

Renee is with Jake Hager outside of Jericho's locker room. They go in and we see all the camera lights set up there for some reason. Jake asked if he was really considering joining Callis. Jericho says he doesn't know and needs time. He said he and Callis have history. Jake said he saved his life in Abu Dhabi and left MMA to come help him. Jake said it isn't just Jericho's career on the line, it's his too. He said until he is straight with him, he can't give him 100%. He then gives him his purple hat and leaves.

Owen Hart Women's Tournament Semifinal - Ruby Soho vs Skye Blue

They yell at each other then Ruby slaps her and stomps on her foot. Ruby shoulders her over then Skye slaps her. Ruby has her head banged off the buckle. Toni gets on the apron and Skye grabs her. Skye kicks Toni from the apron then Skye bangs Ruby's head off the apron. Toni grabs Skye and pushes her into the steps. The ref kicks Toni and Saraya out. Ruby backs Skye's head off the floor and we go to PiP break.

We return and they trade forearms on the apron. Ruby knees her and takes a superkick. Skye knees her in the face then swinging neckbreakers her. Ruby single leg crabs her and she hits the ropes. Ruby uses the ref and then pulls her off the ropes with a knee to the face and wins it.

I am so over these matches. It's the same thing every time and it's never good.

We go to QTV and they show Harley Cameron's "Rap Class" music video. She actually rapped pretty fast and personally, I don't think it was any worse than anything that any of the big rap names do. QT and Solo celebrate for her after and the segment ends. Well, this was pointless.

Swerve Strickland vs Nick Wayne

Nick's mom is in the front row. Swerve rolls him up and cartwheels over him. Nick misses kicks and they stand off. Nick headscissors him and gets hit while posing. Nick fisherman suplexes him. Swerve is sent over the top then Nick hurricanrana's him off the apron. We go to break and return and Nick takes a neckbreaker on the floor during the break.

Nick shotgun dropkicked him then spin kicks him. Nick handspring cutters him and turns it into a shiranui. Nick is caught in the air and hit with double backbreakers. Darby comes out to cheer on Nick then Nick top rope poisonrana's him. Nick then hits a cody cutter for 2. Nick gets his top rope hurricanrana reversed into a top rope powerbomb. Swerve then hits his flying kick to the head for 2. Swerve hits a half nelson bomb and wins it.

This was awful indy crap with nobody selling anything and kicking out of everything.

Don Callis comes out to announce the 5th member of the BCC's team for Blood and Guts. He calls Kenny Omega a punk then Kenny comes out. Kenny gets hit by Mox and Takeshita then PAC shows up for some reason and nails Kenny with a chair. Kenny gets stomped 3v1. Pac says Kenny has no idea how long he waited for this. Pac said Kenny extorted him and broke his nose and now he pays the price. They go to Pillmanize him then we find out Kota Ibushi is the Elite's partner at Blood and Guts. The Elite then come out to help Kenny, after watching him get beaten up for minutes and doing nothing about it.

Page gets on the mic after and says they will finish this once and for all. Kenny says it's more than about fighting, it's about heart, passion, soul and friendship. He said Don will never win this battle and says he will find the hard way that barbed wire and skewers will be nothing compared to what they do to him. Kenny says he will come for Don when the BCC is down. Kenny then says, "goodbye, mwah and goodbye, bang".

This segment sucked. Pac was affiliated with the Lucha Bros as a face the last time we saw him and he hasn't shown any special hatred of Kenny for years. It makes no sense to bring him out here for this. I think it's silly to have this big 5v5 cage match involving two people who have nothing to do with this feud in Ibushi and Pac. The Elite watched their buddy get beat up 3v1 for minutes on end and did nothing about it then Kenny was so mad at the BCC and Pac that he blew kisses to the crowd to end the show. Horrible stuff.

Overall thoughts: The first half had some real good stuff with MJF and Cole and Jericho even got a decent match out of Komander plus had a good segment with Callis. The second half went off the rails though. The women's match sucked like usual, Wayne/Swerve was bad and the main event angle didn't make much sense along with having Kenny blow kisses to the crowd to build up Blood and Guts.
