WWE NXT 1/10/2023 New Years Evil
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2023/01/wwe-nxt-132022.html
We start the show at Chase U. Chase says it's a new semester and we get a fresh start. He said the homework tonigh this to watch New Years Evil. He runs down some of the matches and ties them into various words. One of the students says he is looking forward to Walker/Dempsey and Chase says he should look forward to the NXT Title match. Marcus is kicked out and Thea doubts whether she can win tonight or not. Thea says we can do it and we start the show.
Tony D'Angelo vs Dijak
They trade shots to start and Dijak is clotheslined over the top. Dijak misses a kick and knocks the steps over. Tony puts a side headlock on and hits a lariat for 1. Dijak hits a nice lariat. Dijak goes out and we go to PiP break. Stacks gets handcuffed to the post and hit with the chain during the break and Tony gets neckbreakered while on the middle rope.
We return and Tony makes a comeback with a big belly to belly. Tony spinebusters him for 2. Dijak hits a superkick then does a sitout chokeslam for 2. Stacks gets in the ring to protect Tony, Tony knocks him off then Dijak hits a spinning facekick to win this.
I didn't like this at all. It wasn't long enough and Dijak got thrown around too much for his gimmick.
Toxic Attraction are interviewed. They said they don't have a chance tonight, but a certainty. They said Roxanne will pay for what she did to them. Gigi said if it comes down to them, they will basically be announced as co-winners.
The Creed Brothers vs Indus Sher
Sanga comes out alone and says Veer is not here. Sanga says he will do this 2v1. The Creeds say they won't do this 2v1 then Jinder Mahal attacks from behind. Brutus is chokeslammed on the steps then Julius takes a cobra clutch slam. Jinder says Veer and Saga fight for respect, but he doesn't.
This was a bait and switch and totally bogus. I wanted to see that match. Keep in mind this match was delayed too because a Creed was injured, so this is a major screw up.
Pretty Deadly are talking about their looks in the back. The New Day come in. They tell them they are next as the Creed Brothers match didn't happen.
Jinder and Sanga are talking in the back. Feroz asks if this is who he really is and Sanga says he is. Elektra Lopez then says it'll be the same way tonight in the battle royale as evryone is in for themselves.
Pretty Deadly Gauntlet
First up is The Rockers, two jobbers who look nothing like The Rockers. One of them takes a gorilla press into a codebreaker then a spilled milk.
The New Day then come out and say this isn't going to fly. They bring out Edris Enofe and Malik Blade
Pretty Deadly vs Edris Enofe and Malik Blade
Blade and Enofe get the early advantage and hit flying clotheslines then do double tope con hilo's. We go to break and return with Enofe hitting clotheslines and a spinebuster on Kit. Elton takes a spinesbuter then Kit takes a pumping knee for 2. Enofe takes a big superplex but Blade flies in and springboard crossbodies him. Elton takes a flipping blockbuster + samoan drop combo then Elton picks up the pin with help from Kit.
Briggs and Jensen are supposed to be up next but they are down in the back. Pretty Deadly celebrates then Gallus comes out, back from their suspension.
Pretty Deadly vs Gallus
The fight goes outside to start and Kit is backdropped on the apron. Elton takes a half nelson bomb and Kit takes a gamenigiri into a powerslam and Gallus wins it.
We go to the diner apolo Crews hangs at. Carmelo Hayes is there and said Crews saw he is the past, present and future. Trick's voice then pops into Melo's head and we see him next to Melo with a Cien Caras mask on. They talk about Melo winningthe NXT title and drink coffee.
We finally get the New Years Countdown segment we were promised and it's Tiffany Stratton. She asks how badly we missed her and says every woman in the locker room is sweating like a pig becuase she is back. She says 2023 can begin because the center of the universe is back.
We get a Bron Breakker vs Grayson Waller package.
Kayden Carter and Katana Chance are interviewed in the parking lot. Tiffany Stratton is caught going to her car and says no questions.
WWE NXT Title - Bron Breakker (c) vs Grayson Waller
Waller slaps him early then goes on the run to make Bron chase him. Waller misses an elbow then is shouldered. Bron hits a suplex then a standing moonsault. Bron hits shots thne takes a ddt. Waller hits some knees to the head. Waller backdrops him for 2 then does pushups. Waller hits some overhead suplexes and does a neat tilt-a-whirl slam.Bron is sent hard into the buckles then the middle rope breaks as we go to break.
We return from break and the ropes are fixed. Bron is in a single leg crab. They trde shots and Waller lariats him in the back of the head. Waller puts him in the steiner recliner then Bron hits a spinebusters. Bron bulldogs him from the top rope. Waller rolls out of the ring and into it then hits a jumping knee. Waller goes on the 2nd rope then the rope breaks and Waller falls out of the ring. Bron wins by countout.
They were doing fine together but the shenanigans with the ropes ruined it. This match was a joke and this show up to this point is one of the worst NXT eps I've ever seen.
This was a total disaster booking wise and I hated all of this.
Julius Creed is in the back and comes out of the medical center. Ivy Nile asks if he's okay. Julius says he wants to knock out Jinder Mahal. Julius says there is no moving on from them which Ivy asks for then they yell at each other and leave.
Roxanne Perez is interviewed and talks about possible winners in the battle royale tonight. She said anyone can win and she can't wait to watch.
We see clips of the Drew Gulak and Hank Walker storyline.
Apollo Crews and Axiom talk in the back. Crews is upset about Melo. Ax says he can't let it get to him. Crews says he's a number guy, asks if he is in and says lets make some calls.
Charlie Dempsey vs Hank Walker
Hank hits a big shoulder breaker early and they reference Papa Shango. Dempsey works him on the ropes then Hank spears him out of the ring and both go to the floor. Hank hits a nice boot to the chest then Dempsey catches the next one and does a neat dragon screw variation. Dempsey puts him in a bow and arrow. Hank rolls him into a nice armbar. Dempsey flips out of it and bows and arrows him. Hank is going for the ropes but Dempsey rolls him and grabs the win via tap out.
Nothing wrong with and the finish was pretty cool.
Sol is doing handstands in the back and Alba Fyre walks up to her. Alba says she feels she owes her the match. Sol says no and Alba gets mad then Sol says she will take her up on it. Alba apologizes and says she will see her tonight nad next week. I dunno what the deal was wiht this.
We see a package on Tyler Bate. He said it was time for hos a break and said he returns next week to NXT and is staying.
Anonymous sent another message saying even if you don't see me, I have eyes and ears everywhere.
Jinder Mahal vs Julius Creed
They made this one during one of the matches earlier.
Creed runs in and spinebusters Jinder. Jinder hits shots then is slammed down again. Creed drives him into the post and lariats him over the top. We go to break and return to Creed jumping up the buckles and hitting a half-butterfly suplex and getting his lip busted open.
Jinder stomps on him then Jinder hits a big knee. Julius hits a great overhead suplex and a nice slam for 2. Creed does his rolling slam and goes up top. Sanga tries to distract him and Julius misses a top rope SSP. Jinder facekicks him then picks up the win with what I think was a cobra cluthc slam.
It was a decent match, but it was a match nobody really wanted or asked for.
Briggs and Jensen are with Fallon and Kiana James. They talk about Gallus and Fallon says they will take care of this tonight. Jensen wishes them luck.
We get a video for Stevie Turner. She says she is the best and is doing a livestream. She said she will download us on everything that is the life of Stevie. She said she is always 2 levels above and 2 steps ahead.
#1 Contenders Women's Battle Royale
Toxic Attraction were the last two left here. Jacy acted like they were going to leave together superkicked Gigi.. They both fought on the post then they both fell out at the same time. The officials then argued over who landed first. They eventually declared them duo winners.
Roxanne Perez then came out with her belt and held it up.
The battle royale had a cool spot with Sol doing a handstand to save herself from elimination then climbing back in and had Wendy Choo land on a pillow but not be eliminated. The goofy finish was the last thing this show needed though.
Shawn Michaels sat down with Bron and Waller and said they would fight in a steel cage at NXT Vengeance Day.
Overall thoughts: It was the worst episode of NXT I've ever seen. It was built up for weeks and was just awful in every way. We were promised matches that didn't happen. We had wacky finishes with a rope breaking and two people being eliminated at the same time on the very same show. And they turned the gauntlet into a joke. This show felt like a middle finger to the fans and I'm seriously disappointed in NXT.
