AEW Dynamite 3/24/2021

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2021/03/aew-dynamite-3172021.html

AEW World Heavyweight Championship - Kenny Omega (c) vs Matt Sydal

Callis is on commentary Sydal flips out of a snapmare early. Sydal counters a slam with an armdrag then hits a satellite headscissors to send Kenny out. Kenny takes control again back on the inside. Sydal hits a kick combo then a standing twisting moonsault for 2. Sydal hits a meteora in the corner but is flipped with a lariat soon after.

From the outside floor, Kenny backdrops Sydal on the apron. That move has gotten really popular lately and I don't know why. Omega sits on the top rope and Sydal jumps up to hurricanrana him in one shot, then he brainbusters him for 2. Sydal goes for a top rope hurricanrana. Omega either misses with a powerbomb attempt or Sydal just bumps off the top rope and flips in a bad landing.

Sydal takes a dragon suplex then takes a neckbreaker over the knee. Sydal hits a high kick and a lightning spiral but it is only for 2. Sydal goes for a meteora from the top but gets caught and buckle bombed. Then he takes a v-trigger for 2.

Sydal takes another v-trigger near the ropes but comes back with a poisonrana. Sydal gets crotched on the top rope and Kenny hits a v-trigger on him up there. Sydal rolls up Kenny on a OWA attempt and gets a close 2. Kenny then hits another v-trigger and a one winged angel for the win. As usual, I think they did too much for the opening match but at least Omega didn't try doing limbwork here that never pays off. The corner hurricanrana bump was wild and dangerous.

The Dark Order is interviewed. Silver says he is ready and he pretends to do coffin drop evades. Page asks if he's nervous or not and he says he is not.Silver was goofy as usual.

Hangman Adam Page vs Cezar Bononi

Cezar goes out early then catches Page's dive and slams him on the apron. Bononi clotheslines him but Page doesn't sell it and fires back with forearms. Cezar throws him across the ring with a slam. Page hits some lariats and hits a big release exploder, which Cezar shouldn't of taken. Page then hits a buckshot lariat for the win. Cezar is big and needs to be protected as such by not taking huge bumps...or being squashed in 3 minutes like he was here.

Lance Archer does a promo from an abadoned building. He said he looked up to Sting. He said Sting's bat used to mean something. It mean justice and to pay attention and now it means to pay attention to Archer. Archer said Sting is an all-time great but people are going to treat him like that too.

We see a promo from Rosa last week. She said she made a statement and that women's wrestling should be valued everywhere. She said thank you for believing in her.

Britt Baker is then interviewed by Tony on the stage. She gets cheered but she says it is not enough. Britt says she should thank her every week because now she will be remembered. Britt says she is part of history that she wrote with her own blood. Britt said Mick Foley gave her a thumbs up. She said thanks for it but said while it took him 20 years to become a hardcore legend, she did it in one night. She said Tony Khan is looking for every legend he can find when she is the biggest legend here. She said she put AEW on the map.

The Pinnacle heads to the ring as we go to break.

Christian is talking with Dante Martin and The Varsity Blondes in the back. He is interviewed and said they are talking shop. He said he is giving them advice. Kazarian then goes up to him. He says he has out worked everyone since day one and asked when the work part of Christian's slogan will begin? Christian calls him "Cranky Frankie". Christian says it starts next week and if Frankie wants, he can step up for a singles match. Frankie agrees. Frankie asks if he is busy on Monday as he has a match on Elevation on Monday. He says 7 years is a long time for Christian to be out of the ring.

Dante Martin and The Varsity Blonds vs FTR and Shawn Spears

Shawn looks bad with the blonde mohawk. Dane springboards and double stomps Spears' arm. Pillman tries to fight out of a 1v2 and superkicks Spears and Dax. Dante then does a double jump moonsault onto Spears and Dax. Griff then spears both. The faces tease a triple dive but don't. We go to picture-in-picture break where Pillman is worked over.

Dante gets the hot tag and hits some flying moves and moonsaults off of Spears. He lariats Spears over the top and then takes a hard brainbuster. Dax pops up Dante into a Spears running death valley driver.

Wasn't a fan of this one. Pinnacle needed to look strong and took way too much offense. Instead, Dante Martin was given the shine spot...which took place on picture-in-picture instead of when everyone could see it clearly. After, Wardlow hit his bad knee finisher on Pillman Jr. and threw him out.

Tony Schiavone comes in to interview the Pinnacle. Cash Wheeler says The Pinnacle is family. He says he will die for them. MJF said Jericho used to break the walls down but now breaks whatever chair he sits in. He challenges Jericho to bring his crew down but said they are terrified of him. Tony said they are hurt and MJF and Wardlow then stare him down and stop him. He then says when you are in The Pinnacle, you are always on top.

Team Taz does a promo. He said Cage apologized to the whole group and Starks in particular. Cage made faces seemingly not buying it. Starks had a very cheesy and seemingly fake smile and it seems like this was all a front.

QT Marshall was interviewed on the stage. He says he is frustrated. He said there are perks to being Cody's friend and said he has done more work in AEW than everyone except Tony Khan. QT said Cody will go home to the Marriot tonight while he works. He said he will always be seen as Cody's friend(true) and says him and Cody need to have an exhibition match next week so he can prove that he can hang with the best.

Cody then comes out with a sling on his arm. He agrees and said Arn Anderson will be the ref. He said he's not going to hurt him and won't try to finish him if he can. He said QT is a good assistant and a friend.

I hate worked shoot stuff and this felt like that.

Rey Fenix, Penta El Ciero Miedo and Laredo Kid vs Brandon Culter and The Young Bucks

The lucha guys did an inset promo. Penta supposedly says Cutler is going to need to find new friends. I know why Brandon Culter is here, but why is Brandon Culter here instead of Dark where he should be? And it's nice of them to give Laredo Kid a pay day here but putting someone like Fuego del Sol, whom gets destroyed weekly for them might have been better.

Nick cartwheels out of a wristlock early and they try to dropkick each other at the same time before they lariat each other and kip up at the same time. Matt springboard twisting armdrags Penta. Penta has him on his stomach and does a headstands on his back for some reason while grabbing his arms.

Laredo does a nice spinning headscissors on Cutler. Rey walks up the ropes, forward flips on them then armdrags both Bucks down. Penta then flip dives on both Bucks. Cutler hits a springboard elbow on Rey then a springboard flip dive on his opponents. Laredo Kid then does a moonsault from the top rope to the floor.

The Bucks hit a powerbomb/sliced bread #2 combo on Kid in the corner. They go to  picture in picture break and Brandi Rhodes does a commercial about women's pay in the US. That's funny in a lot of ways as I bet any money Brandi is getting a lot more than many of the AEW roster members are for being the wife of an EVP. But I don't think that's the kind of challenging the pay gap she was looking for here. Kid takes a lot of slingshot offense while this goes on.

We return from break with the Lucha Bros doing double superkicks to The Bucks then Rey jumps off of Penta's shoulders for a splash. Rey and Nick fight on the 2nd rope then Kid springboards up to hurricanrana Nick. Penta does a top rope double footstomp and Rey hits a swanton from the top. Rey does his springboard spin kick and he and Nick rebound off the ropes before Nick flips him with a lariat.

Kid handsprings into a ddt but Matt catches him and later Penta for northern lights suplexes. The Bucks hit a moonsault springboard dive combo on Kid then Cutler hits a springboard elbow. Penta is bridged outside on the apron and Nick flips on him. Rey gets put into a tombstone position then one of the Bucks gets popped up by Cutler for a spike tombstone. Nick does a twisting dive then Matt does a springboard ddt onto Rey who took a wild twisting bump on his head on the apron. Kid then beats Cutler with a top rope spanish fly to win.

The did the usual Bucks match here where they do every spot they can think of and little selling or story was involved. Kid took most of the offense here and as expected, Cutler took the loss.

Kenny Omega comes out with Don Callis. He hits Kid in the head with a mic then hits him with the belt. I think Kenny shaved his eyebrows. He said he wasn't happy that the Bucks chose Brandon Cutler over him tonight and said they haven't been with him lately. He mentioned the "hard cam" which was lame. He tries to make them do a "too sweet", but The Bucks refused and he said he is done with them. Penta and Rey double superkicked Kenny then did a package piledriver + double footstomp combo on him. Kenny is bleeding from the mouth and The Good Brothers come out to tend to him after he is beaten up.

Jade Cargill does a promo. She called Red Velvet a pit stop on her way to greatness. She said when Velvet fights her, she is stepping in the ring with "that b!tch".

Brandi makes her 2nd appearance on a show she isn't even on as they announce she and Cody will be doing a reality series. Can that much ego fit in one show?

We return from break and Eddie Kingston broke something in his leg. Mox asks how far the Good Brothers are willing to take this battle. Mox says he doesn't know or like The Young Bucks. He said he owes them one and doesn't like owing people stuff either. He said we are playing with live rounds here and if they are going to be in the game, they better be willing to get their hands dirty in a good promo.

I will not be reviewing the Rose match.

They do a promo for Kip, Miro and Ford vs OC and Chuck Taylor video game death match. Chuck says it doesn't matter how many times you go down, as long as you win in the end. Chuck makes Donkey Kong references and Miro says it will be game over next week. I can't wait for this one to be over.

They announce the card for the next week.

Scorpio Sky does a promo. He says this isn't a new side of him, but just one we haven't seen. He says he has been screwed over and over again. He says his days of being underrated are over. He says on Elevation this Monday, it is time for Mike Sydal to pay the rent. He says he is the Face of the Revolution.

AEW TNT Championship - Darby Allin (c) vs John Silver

-1 was nowhere to be found here. I guess he was doing homework. They got off to a slow start. Silver hits a hard euro uppercut off the ropes and Darby falls hard to the outside and knocks his head off the floor. That looked very dangerous. Silver throws Darby across the ring and Silver being so small and doing power spots is dumb. Darby gets then gets thrown into the buckles overhead and takes a hard fall down.

Silver hits a running knee and a brainbuster for 2. We go to picture-in-picture break. Silver had Darby on his back in a neckbreaker position, then he hung him, swung him and spin dropped him in another nasty bump. Silver then knees Darby near the ropes and he falls out onto the floor. Silver charges at Darby near the rails and goves over them onto the concrete which wasn't smart.

5 tries to help Silver in and Darby ends up hitting him with a tope. Darby then gets a german suplex on the floor. Sting comes out with a bat and the Dark Order runs away even though there are  many more of them. Silver hits some kicks and is rolled up for 2.  Allin tries to go over the top but Silver puts him in a grounded sleeper.

Silver hit a nasty ddt where he spinned in mid-air and made Darby take a bad bump on his head. Silver stares down Sting even though both are technically faces right now and they say the time is running out. Darby powers up and hits some hard slaps and Silver hits some back. Darby gets his victory roll blocked for 2. Darby took a hard backwards bumps on a pump kick. Darby has Silver down while he is on top and opts to coffin drop the Dark Order instead of his opponent for some unknown reason. Silver hits a top rope torture rack bomb but Darby's feet hit the ropes. Silver gets his powerbombed reversed into a code red and Darby wins it. Darby and Stingstare down Silver after and Silver bump fists with Darby. Matt Hardy then throws Darby into the rails. The Dark Order, Private Party, Hardy, The Butcher, The Blade, Sting and others all brawl as the show ended.

This match was super dangerous with a couple of awful looking spots that could and may have really injured someone. Darby is not going to last long by taking these stupid bumps. I also didn't like Silver doing power moves like a 6'5 guy when even Darby dwarfs him.

Overall thoughts: Wasn't a fan of this one. Midgets were being better power guys than giants were. Shoot terms were being used. There were tons of big moves without much selling and Darby and Silver are both lucky to come out of that match alive. And Brandi somehow made it on this show twice while being out.
