AEW Dynamite 7/20/2022

AEW Dynamite 7/20/2022

Darby Allin vs Brody King

Darby flies at him and knocks him out of the ring. He tries to tope him. Brody puts him up against the post outside with one arm. Darby then took a nice flip bump off a forearm. Darby climbs his back then is thrown overhead and senton'd. Darby dives at him off the 2nd rope and just bounces off.

Darby is picked up by his pants and swung into the ropes where he takes a bad landing. Darby is then thrown into the rails. Back inside and Darby gets dropped with a hard forearm. Darby is then thrown out to the floor. We go to PiP break and return. Darby is still being dominated then pulls him out of the ring by putting a belt around his feet. Darby then pounds on him and does a sick tope through the ropes.

Darby is put on the top rope and chopped then chopped as he hangs in tree of woe. Brody misses a cannonball then takes a code red. Darby then sits on his neck and pulls back on both arms. Bordy then cannonballs him into the buckles with him on his back. Brody hanging chokes him off the apron and drops him to the floor. Brody then hits a nasty sitout dominator that they incorrectly call a ganso bomb.

I don't know if this was as much of a match as it was a total squash. It was absolutely vicious with Darby taking a collection of painful looking bumps. It put over both guys and was one of the most vicious looking matches I've ever seen.

Sting came down after and Malakai Black appeared when the lights turned off and turned back on. He stared down Sting then misted him. Brody King then choked Sting. Miro then came out and the segment ended as Miro was on the ramp.

Cole Karter was interviewed. Starks and Hobbs came in and put a hat on Tony. Starks says he is the future and and is looking towards the future. Cole says he will beat Ricky for the FTW Title tonight. Unless I missed an episode, and I didn't, Cole hasn't been on AEW TV and there's no real explanation for him being there.

Jon Moxley and Wheeler Yuta vs Best Friends (Trent Beretta and Chuck Taylor)

Mox takes Trent down and dragon screws him early. Chuck shoulder blocks Yuta and the cameras cut away as likely someone got slapped. Yuta pounds on Trent with bad punches and they forearm each other. Trent backdrops Yuta then pounds on him with forearms against the ropes.

Yuta rolls out and Chuck throws him into the rails. We go to PiP break and return with Yuta suplexes Chuck. Daniel Garcia is shown watching on from the back. Yuta and Chuck tag out then Mox lariats Trent. He then pounds on him with forearms and Mox throws Chuck over a table outside. Trent springboard off the 2nd rope and takes a cutter. Mox then stomps on him. Mox gets hung up on the top rope then Chuck hits a nasty over the shoulder piledriver. Chuck then short piledrivers Yuta into a regular piledriver from Trent for 2.

Yuta release germans Trent then Trent spinning forearms him. Trent then hits a peach sunrise on him and Mox/Chuck lariat each other. Mox figure fours Trent outside then Yuta is release northern lights suplexed into the buckles. Yuta rolls him up and then pins him to win.

They did a bunch of dangerous looking stuff here and did too much. Chuck Taylor always looked silly doing dangerous Japanese moves and this was on full display here. They seemd to kind of tease Best Friends being more serious here as well.

We get as hype video for Gresham vs Claudio. Gresham says he will have to be outsmarted and outwrestled but he says he won't be.

Chompy the mascot Shark poses at the commentator's table.

Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland are interviewed. Swerve said he had Kevin Gates come, who is apparently a rapper. Keith said he's here to give thanks to all of us. Keith says he and Swerve don't look down and said you want a shot at the tag titles, you better reach. They say they will go to toast their title reign then Mark Sterling and Tony Nese come out.

Mark says they got lucky with the tag titles and says the petition for The People vs Swerve Strickland is almost complete. He asks Kevin Gates to sign it. Kevin says no and he says like Swerve, he is untrustworthy and his music sucks. Gates comes to ringside and is not ejected by security. Gates knocks out Nese then Swerve grabs a cake outside and hits Mark with it.

John Silver and Alex Reynolds said they want to talk to Butcher and Blade. Silver says Butcher is his favorite wrestler and gives him a "Butch" t-shirt. They give Blade one too and get beaten up for it. Alex is thrown into the wall then Adam Page chases them off with a chair.

The Varsity Blonds vs Christian Cage and Luchasaurus

Brian runs into a Lucha headbutt then Griff spinning forearms Lucha. Brian superkicks Lucha and Lucha clotheslines both Blonds over. Lucha chokeslams Brian then chokeslams Griff onto Brian's back. Christian then picks up the win in a squash.

Not real sure why the fed the Blonds to Cage and Lucha when they had other options. It kind of feels like the Blonds are at the end of their run here.

Christian and Lucha pose then Jungle Boy comes out. He has a chair and Lucha stands in his way. Lucha then steps aside and JB goes after Christian. Christian runs into the stands as the segment ends. I'm glad Jurassic Express isn't broken up as I don't think this was the right time or the right way to do that. But the swerve didn't make a lot of sense. Why would Lucha pretend to be with Christian for the last few weeks and why would he destroy all those wrestlers if he was just playing along?

The Gunn Club are interviewed. Austin says they won't accept a match with The Acclaimed because they carried them for months. Colten then says he wants Max Caster 1v1 in a rap battle on Rampage.

FTW Title - Ricky Starks vs Cole Karter

We already talked about Cole earlier, but he was in NXT as Two Dimes. He was cut for reasons that weren't revealed, but it seemed to be due to something outside of wrestling.

Ricky hits chops early then jumping back elbows him. Ricky then hits a nice lariat and Cole comes back with forearms. Cole dropkicks him then Cole 2nd rope crossbodies him. Cole then lariats him onto the apron then knocks him off it.

We go to PiP break and return. Cole hits lariats and kicks him. Cole hits a jumping knee and jumps over his spear. Cole then cutters him and misses a 450. Starks then spears him and wins it.

I'm not a fan of people losing on their debuts and the build to this was out of nowhere. It was fine for basically being a short squash, but everything else was wrong with it.

Starks gets on the mic after. He says let's get another "challenge" out here. Danhausen then comes out and said he accepts it. Starks then says it will be next week instead of this week.

Athena, Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale are interviewed. They were supposed to be in a 6-man tag tonight but it will not be a tag match instead. Willow says her and Athena got this covered and make Kris join the cheer to crush Baddies.

FTR are interviewed by Tony in the ring. They say the Briscoes have helped lift wrestling up for 20 years. They said they will not take their titles from them. Dax said his daughter fought hard through a heart condition and he will fight that hard too to keep the tag titles.

Satnam Singh, Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt are interviewed. Dutt says he doesn't care about Christopher Daniels. Jay said it's a shame he has to wait to take Joe's TV Title. Christopher Daniels walks in and challenges Lethal for Rampage. Lethal complains about hims interrupting them.

Jade Cargill and Kiera Hogan vs Athena and Willow Nightingale

Jermaine Dupri is at ringside watching. Keira and Athena dodge each others kicks then Athen is thrown down. Willow poses after being hit by Kiera then Kiera misses a dropkick. Willow crossbodies her as she is seated. Willow slams Athena onto Kiera for 2. Willow then blockbusters Jade and Kiera off the apron. Athena then 2nd rope springboards onto her opponents outside.

We go to PiP break and return. Athena does something like a waterwheel drop to Kiera then Willow gets the hot tag in and beats up Kiera. Willow spinebusters Kiera. Athena and Jade stare down and fight then Jade kicks her. Athen crossbodies her off the 2nd rope but is caught and takes a fallaway slam. Jade kips up and poses then Athena kips up. Jade pops up Athena and she meteora's her down. Athena powerbombs Kiera on the apron then Stokeley gets in Athena's face. Athena shoves her then takes a pump kick from Jade. Kiera chinbreakers Willow then Jade blue thunder bombs Willow for 2. Jade then hits the double chickenwing bomb on Willow and wins it.

It wasn't anything too special but they didn't really blow anything, so that's good.

Thunder Rosa and Toni Storm are interviewed by Tony Schiavone. Rosa does a promo on Miyu Yamashita, whose name Tony pronounces wrong. Britt Baker and Hayter come in. Britt says we need less Rosa promos, which I agree with. She said she hopes Rosa loses and says the fans want Britt and Jamie Hayter on Rampage.

They run down some of the future cards. Miyu Yamashita is on Dynamite next week against Thunder Rosa and there is an ROH 6-Man Tag Titles defense at the ROH PPV.

The shark cage, which has been visible all show long, is brought down.

Barbed Wire Everywhere - Eddie Kingston vs Chris Jericho

Justin Roberts' mic is covered in barbed wire, which is interesting. The Jericho Appreciation Society is then put in a shark cage. Ruby Riot controls the key to the cage and the lift for the cage. Jericho wore a black and white mask out and black facepaint around his eyes. 3 sides of the ring have barbed wire, there's a barbed wire table, a barbed wire bat and chair and a barbed wire bed.

Eddie hits Jericho with the barbed wire mic. Eddie busts his open then pulls on the cut. Eddie bites the cut then Jericho hits him with a barbed wire ring bell. Jericho bangs Eddie's head off a barbed wire table then Eddie returns the favor. Eddie throws him into the barbed wire ropes. Eddie sticks Jericho's head in the barbed wire and hits him with the barbed wire chair. Jericho then hurricanrana's Eddie off the top onto barbed wire.

We go to PiP break. Jericho pounds on him and backdrops him on the barbed wire table. Jericho then boston crabs Eddie on the barbed wire table. Jericho is pushed int othe barbed wire ropes. We return from break to them punching each other. Jericho is thrown into the ropes then crotched on them. They fight on the apron and Eddie suplexes him off the apron through a barbed wire table. Tay Conti comes down and jumps Ruby Soho then Anna Jay pulls her off. Anna then hits Ruby and throws her into the post.

Anna then lowers the cage and Tay goes to unlock it. Tay struggles to unlock it and the JAS climb through the shark cage. The JAS beats up Eddie then Ortiz and the Blackpool Combat Club come out to help. ortiz hits Jericho wit ha loaded sock and Eddie exploders Jericho into a barbed wire table for 2. Jericho codebreakers Eddie as he has the barbed wire chair and Jericho gets ome of the barbed wire chair on his face. Jericho hits Eddie with a barbed wire chair. He goes for a lionsault and Eddie throws the chair at him during it. Eddie then uraken's him for 2.

Eddie gets barbed wire and stretch plum's Jericho with it wrapped around him. Sammy Guevarra then comes in and superkicks Eddie. Sammy beats him up and throws Eddie into a judas effect with barbed wire around the arm. Jericho picks up the win.

Jericho and Sammy stop Eddie from an atttack then Jericho is thrown into a barbed wire spider web bed outside by Eddie.

This was quite the spectacle with the Anna Jay swerve and the JAS getting out of the shark cage. It was bloody and they took some tough bumps, but the shenanigans did bring it down some and made it come across as less serious. It was entertaining but I didn't think it was a classic and it was kind of like if WWE did a barbed wire match.

Overall thoughts: This was a different show. We had 2 swerves and someone losing on their tv debut, but we had a memorable Darby/Brody match and the main was entertaining, but also kind of got silly.
