AEW Rampage 5/27/2022

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/05/aew-rampage-5202022.html

Bryan Danielson vs Matt Sydal

Bryan armdrags him and drops a knee on him then Sydal comes back with a flying snapmare. Bryan then backbreakers him and does a neat forward rolling surfboard. Sydal then comes back with a spinning heel kick and a standing corkscrew moonsault.

We go to PiP break and return. Sydal flips out of a snapmare then jumping spin kicks him. Sydal gets caught in the air and he goes for a hurricanrana but the pin is only for 2. Sydal then high kicks him for 2. Sydal meteoras him off the top but Bryan rolls backwards and puts him in a single leg crab. Bryan then hits some kicks.

They go up top and Sydal sunset flips him from the top, basically powerbombing him. Bryan hits a flying knee. He then hits some elbows and chokes him out for the win.

It was a match. I don't really think Sydal should be going that even with Bryan and I thought the top rope sunset flip shouldn't have been brushed off like it was. There wasn't much build up to the finish either.

The Young Bucks vs Jon Cruz and Taylor Rust

The Young Bucks come out dressed like the Hardy's and they bring out Gangrel with them. Gangrel spits blood and he walks like he has a crooked leg these days. Cutler is dressed up like Lita in a really disturbing image.

Taylor Rust is the former Tyler Rust. This is his AEW debut. Cruz looks about as far from a wrestler as you can get. Nick does Jeff's legdrop to the stomach/crotch then Nick jumps off of Matt's back to flying attack Cruz in the corner ala the Hardy's. Matt teases doing a top rope move then moves down a buckle, then elbows Cruz from the 2nd rope.

Rust gets the hot tag in and hits some kicks then takes a double superkick. Cuz then gets a double superkick and Matt hits a twist of fate. Nick then does a top rope swanton bomb to win.

This was a silly squash. For a company that hates WWE, they sure like to book like them. I bet any money Regal is trying to get Rust hired as well.

Gangrel raises their hands after then the Bucks attack him. The Bucks go for a BTE trigger then the Hardy's come out. Cutler attacks the Hardy's from behind. Gangrel then comes back up, misses a kick on Cutler then jumping ddt's him. Cutler then takes a twist of fate and a top rope swanton.

Darby Allin does a promo. He said Kyle O'Reilly was the one who took out Sting and said he is challenging him to a fight. He said if he doesn't accept, he is going to interfere in his friends matches at the PPV.

Matt Caster vs Dante Martin

We see clips of their first match from a year ago. Brock Anderson is noticeably in the crowd for it. The Gunn Club tries to do Bowens' bit during his entrance. Dante interrupts it with a springboard dive then Billy Gunn drives him into the steps in clear view of the ref. The ref throws out the Gunn's and The Acclaimed when the match starts.

Max goes to work on the leg of Dante then Max back elbows him. We go to PiP break and return. Max backdrops Dante and Dante sunset flips him. Dante top rope crossbodies him then does his double jump moonsault and wins it.

This was a short one and there wasn't a lot to it before the finish.

Samoa Joe and Adam Cole talk over a video. Cole says he will be a franchise player for years to come and says he will win the Owen Hart tournament. Joe says Adam's time is near.

Lambert, Sky and Page do a promo. We see the new AEW TNT title which is purple and gold. Taz says it is "LA Lakers style". Sammy, Tay and Kazarian break into the American Top Team building that Lambert owns. They threaten the receptionist and break trophy case. They tell them they will be in Vegas if they want the titles they took back. Scorpio Sky says this has been gone on too long and agrees to a mixed trios match. Sky says Kazarian and Sammy can't challenge for the TNT Title if Sky's team wins.

This angle sucks. I have no idea who the heels or faces are supposed to be and now Kazarian is getting dragged down into it too.

Kris Statlander and Ruby Soho do a split screen promo. Ruby said she needs to win the Owen Hart tournament. Kris talks about all the bad things that happened to her in AEW. She said she won't let this opportunity go.

Owen Hart Women's Tournament Semifinal - Kris Statlander vs Ruby Soho

Kris legsweeps her early and side throws her. Kris then shoulders her and they bump chests as Ruby holds off on punching her. Rub does a 2nd rope armdrag then Kris blocks an armdrag. Kris then hits a big lariat. We go to PiP break and return. Kris has her on her shoulders on the 2nd rope and Ruby hurricanrana's her from there. Ruby then gets powerbombed on a hurricanrana attempt.

Kris runs into the buckle with her shoulder then can't get the gorilla press off because of the shoulder. Ruby kicks her and she falls out of the ring. Ruby then hurricanrana's her off the apron outside. She then does some bad move where she drives her arm into the mat from the 2nd rope. Ruby then hammerlocks her.

Ruby goes for a poisonrana but is flipped into the buckle instead. Kris then rolls her into a german then hits a ki krusher for 2. Kris lariats her. Kris grabs her legs and gets kicked in the shoulder then Ruby rolls her up and wins it. The crowd is shocked and not in a good way.

Ruby's sloppy, but the match made sense with the shoulder work and I was okay with it. I thought Kris should have won though. It fit the story of Kris being more serious and Ruby winning is out of nowhere.

Britt Baker comes out and Ruby gets on the mic. Tony Schiavone is in the ring. Ruby is getting booed. She said Kris is her friend and she respects her. But she said if she can do this to her friend, she will do it to her. She said Britt has a receipt coming and she will cash it in at Double of Nothing.

Overall thoughts: The main did have some slop to it but the idea was good. The American Top Team vs Sammy/Tay feud continues to suck and now is dragging down Kazarian as well. The Bucks dressing up like the Hardy's was them being goofy as usual and the other stuff wasn't anything special.
