AEW Dynamite 5/11/2022

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/05/aew-dynamite-542022.html

Owen Hart Tournament Quarterfinal - Adam Cole vs Dax Harwood

Cole face shoves him early and Dax haeadlock takeovers him. Dax hits chops and takes a knee to the gut. They try to roll each other up and Dax is thrown into the post under the bottom buckle. Dax is then thrown into the steps. and hit off the rails. We go to PiP break as Dax is thrown into the post.

We return as Dax goes chest first into the buckles. Dax germans him and hangs on for another, but then Cole gets one in and he gets a third in. Dax slingshot sitout powerbombs Cole for 2. Cole then gordbusters him on his knee. Dax twisting crossbodies Cole off the 2nd rope and tries it again but takes a superkick for 2.

Dax blocks a panama sunrise twice then hits a stiff pileriver on him for 2. Dax sharpshooters him and lets go of it as his ribs are huting. He then gets knocked off the apron to the floor by Cole. Cole sharpshooters him and Dax taps out.

I think there was some attempt to work the ribs here, but they took a long break from it during the match and then just kind of brought it up at the end out of nowhere. I don't like Cole, who is supposed to be this big main event guy, going even with Dax like that. I also thought it went a few minutes too long for the opener.

Jeff Hardy cuts a promo on Darby. He said their worlds collide. Darby says this is about getting crazy and wild. Darby says people want to see them go to the hospital and he wants to go to the hospital tonight. Darby asked Tony Khan to wave the rules tonight.

Adam Page comes out then CM Punk follows with a New York Islanders jersey. Punk is getting booed.

CM Punk vs John Silver

Silver shoulders him over and Punk goes outside. Silver hits a bunch of corner forearms and stomps then takes a lariat. We go to PiP break and return to Punk crotching himself on the 2nd buckle. Punk backslides him and takes some kicks and a brainbuster for 2.

Silver botches a tornado ddt and Punk hits a bad leg lariat. Punk stares at Page, who is at the booth then does a bad buckshot lariat to win.

The 2nd half of this really wasn't good at all and was filled with a lot of sloppiness. I wasn't too into this one.

Adam Page comes to the ring. Punk asks if he is mad and says he is taking this personally. Punk says it is not personal and just business. Punk said he usually asks himself if he is a good guy, but today he asks if he is the champ, and he says yes. He said he destroyed Page's friend Silver and destroys him at Double or Nothing. He said Page will shake this hand whether he is conscious or unconscious. I feel like we missed a step along the way here with why these two have issues.

Britt, Rebel and Jamie Hayter are interviewed. Britt isn't happy about having to a wrestle a surprise wrestler in he Owen Hart tournament. Britt says storms come in violent and exciting but then pass, and says the same thing will happen to Toni Storm. Tony says if Britt and Jamie both win, they have to face each other in the semifinals. Britt says the better girl will win.

Danhausen vs Tony Nese

This is Danhausen's debut. No entrance for Nese. Dan tries to curse him, but Mark Sterling gets on the apron and Nese attacks Dan for the quick win.

This was stupid. AEW loves to have people lose on their debut and it always sucks.

Mark Sterling gets on the mic after and says he isn't shocked. Nese then running knee's Dan again. Nese goes for another then Hook comes out and Nese and Mark run. Danhausen tries to shake Hook's hand and Hook shakes it.

Wardlow comes out for the contract signing with security. His tron says "Boo Wardlow". We get Jericho narrative a Dark Side of the Ring package of MJF vs Punk in a chain match. They have Jake Roberts and Tazz blame Wardlow for the loss. Barry Horowitz gets in on this and they say "Legendary Jewish Wrestler", because that has to be pointed out.

MJF then comes out is a New York Islanders jersey. He puts over Long Island. He asks the crowd to boo Wardlow and they do. He says Wardlow has to beat Shawn Spears in a cage match where MJF is the ref, and if he wins, he will face Wardlow. He says if he loses though, Wardlow can't sign a contract with AEW.

Wardlow tries to sign the contract but can't do it with the cuffs. MJF says for the cuffs to be taken off of him. Wardlow uses the opportunity to flip the table and beat up security. MJF, like an idiot doesn't try to leave the ring and opts to stay behind Spears. Wardlow catches MJF and Mark Sterling jumps on Wardlow to stop him. Wardlow then power bombs him through a table.

Wardlow getting uncuffed was clever but everything before it was boring.

We get a Joe/Lethal/Singh/Dutt video. Dutt says Singh isn't the joker in the tournament. Dutt says Joe's stomach is big but his brain is small. Joe says he will win the Owen Hart tournament and come for them after.

FTW Title - Ricky Starks (c) vs Jungle Boy

Starks slaps him around early then JB does the same. Starks does a neat flip off the ropes into an armdrag then JB flips off the ropes into an armdrag. JB then dropkicks him and Stakrs rolls out. We go to PiP break and return. JB gets out of a body scissors and rebounds off the ropes for a lariat. JB tornado ddt's him off the ropes.

Starks takes a superkick for 2 then Starks spears him. JB STF's him. Starks hits the ropes then stunners JB on the top rope. Swerve comes down to stop Starks from running away and JB gets a virtual pin as the ref argues with swerve. JB takes his eyes off Starks then takes a Roshambo and Starks wins.

The crowd wasn't too into this. Some of the armdrags were okay but the ending was lame and I didn't think it was that great.

Jurassic Express comes down to check on JB after and they argue with Swerve. Hobbs and Keith Lee come down and we get a stare down between Hobbs/Swerve, Hobbs/Starks and Luchasaurus/Christian.

The Jericho Appreciation Society did a victory speech. They ripped on Long Island and Jericho said he is wizard because he threw a fireball. They said they eliminated Eddie Kingston's crew. He then said, "Jericho 2:16 says I just burned your face". Jericho then told Eddie to have his wife give him a call if she's feeling sad.

Jon Moxley then came out. Jericho said he was outnumbered and told him to leave, then Bryan Danielson, Wheeler Yuta and William Regal followed. Jericho said they were still outnumbered. Eddie, Santana and Ortiz then popped up from behind and they all fought. Jericho's crew then walked up the ramp.

We got some AEW people talking about Deeb vs Rosa at the PPV.

Owen Hart Women's Tournament Quarterfinal - Jamie Hayter vs Toni Storm

They go to the mat to start then stare each other down. A little later, Toni basement dropkicks her but then is knocked off the apron. We go to PiP break and return and see Storm get suplexed on the floor. The two trade forearms then Storm tornado ddt's her, then does it again off the apron onto the floor. Toni top rope crossbodies her for 2 then Hayter chokeslams her on her knee. Toni gets uranage'd on the apron. Toni then gets superplexed and rolls her up for 2. Toni then short piledrivers her and wins it.

I didn't like this. They did too much and didn't sell much of it at all.

Scorpio Sky talks about facing Kazarian on Rampage. He says there will be friendly fire and it will be hot. He says there can only be one face of TNT and it's him.

Kazarian is then interviewed then Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti walk in. Sammy says Sky will stab him in the back and he can't trust him. Kaz says he doesn't trust them and only trusts himself.

Owen Hart Tournament Quarterfinal - Darby Allin vs Jeff Hardy

Darby shotgun dropkicks him into the buckles to start then hits a hard tope on him outside. Darby then grabs some chairs and sets up two rows facing each other. Darby then is flapjacked on the steps. Darby is thrown into the steps but flips over them then Jeff jumps off the steps to clothesline him, which Darby does a nice bump for. Darby rams Jeff into the post and kind of runs into Matt Hardy.

Darby gets a twist of fate over the middle rope then Jeff pulls out a ladder. Darby hits a code red on Jeff then Jeff comes back with a chinbreaker. Jeff pendulum dropkicks him. Darby gets put on the row of chairs that was set up and Jeff climbs the very high ladder he pulled out. Darby gets up then Jeff gets crotched on the top rope. Darby then climbs the super high ladder and swantons him onto the row of chairs in a very dangerous spot.

Jeff is on the apron and Darby tries to coffin drop him but Jeff moves and Darby lands on the apron. Darby is then laid on the side of the ring steps and Jeff tries to swanton him on them but Darby moves. Darby then top rope coffin drops Jeff for 2 and Jeff then reverses the pin attempt and pins him.

This was a really dangerous match. Both guys took bumps they shouldn't be taking. Darby has to be stopped. He keeps getting lucky by not hurting himself badly, but his luck may run out someday then AEW has a problem on their hands. This was just a stunt show.

They shake hands after and The Elite come out on the stage and stare at them.

Overall thoughts: I wasn't a big fan of this one. I thought the second half of the Wardlow/MJF segment was okay and the JAS stuff was okay, but I wasn't into too much else here. The first half of the show was boring and we had someone lose in their debut in typical AEW fashion. The main event was really dangerous and not much but a stunt show.
