AEW Dynamite 1/19/2022
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/01/aew-dynamite-1122022.html
Jon Moxley returned to start the show. He told some guy to go F himself and told security to kick him out. He looks a lot skinnier. He basically said drinking is a demon he has and he's telling everyone who doubts that he can stay sober to shove it. He said he wants to tour the world in 2022 and says all he drinks is blood.
MJF did a promo with Wardlow. He said Punk had a tainted pinfall victory over Wardlow and apologized to Wardlow. He said it is Wardlow's birthday and his gift is an apology. He said he would have to dock Wardlow's pay since people have been getting his hands on him but said he can get it right back up. He said Shawn Spears would get the job done though and he will be right there watching.
Orange Cassidy and Kris Statlander vs Adam Cole and Britt Baker
Britt stepped on OC when he did his stupid weak kicks spot. Kris teased hitting Cole and this distracted him, leading to a dive on him. Kris hit a delayed suplex on Britt and OC did a dumb spot where he slowly walked and slowly pushed her over.
We went to picture in picture break and came back and the girls were fighting over a backslide. OC now suddenly cared and was throwing hard punches at Cole. He countered a suplex with a stunner and Britt hit a curbstomp on OC. Kris then hit a spinning falcon arrow on Britt for 2. Kris was going to 450 Britt but Cole went over top of her to block it and she did it anyway. Cole then took a beach break from OC. OC tried some bad dive over the top to the ramp and they did a bad superkick spot.
Britt hit a canadian destroyer on Kris on the ramp and Cole hit a panama sunrise which was only worth 2 on OC. Britt and Cole set up a table outside and Britt accidentally went through it when OC ran the ropes and knocked her off. Cole lowblowed OC and his his boom knee for the win.
This was bad. OC didn't care early then suddenly got all angry. They kicked out of canadian destroyers, they had the men and the women doing stuff to each other and Cole went from being the man in NXT to a joke here. Why would Cole and Britt just grab Kris and beat the crap out of her and win it easy since hitting the other sex was allowed here?
Santana, Ortiz and Jericho did a promo. Jericho said he didn't care about Kingston, but Ex-LAX did. They blamed Jericho for why they aren't the tag champs. Santana asked when he has had their back and they left soon after.
Adam Cole was interviewed and kicked the interviewer out. He was mad OC put his hands on Britt and said he would try to end OC's career in a No DQ Lights Out match.
CM Punk vs Shawn Spears
MJF was at the commentary booth for this one. Punk immediately hit the Go to Sleep and won in seconds.
Punk went to pose and MJF snuck up behind him but then stopped. Punk grabbed him by the scarf but MJF took it off and ran. Punk then wore the scarf.
Billy Gunn went up to Christian outside. Billy wanted to know when his boys would get a shot at Jurassic Express. Christian said Billy could never get the statement win and his boys can't either. The Gunns then jumped him, throwing him into a roll down garage door outside. Why the Gunns need a statement win when the Dark Order could just randomly get a shot is beyond me.
Cody Rhodes had a special entrance with smoke and a riser. He had a giant ladder in the ring and mentioned the CM Punk pipe bomb promo. The crowd chanted at him to "shut the f up". He said he did all the things Punk wanted to do and said "you wanna ask why I won't turn heel?". He brought up the Forbidden Door (NJPW not working with AEW) and said he built the Forbidden Door. He ripped on Fish and O'Reilly calling them developmental and said they were in "hiptoss class". He made fun of Walter's new name of Gunther by calling him "Gunner Mcgillabuddy", which also references Michael McGuillicutty. He said AEW didn't have "secondary belts", which I also didn't like. He sent he was sent a contract for a match against Sammy and climbed the ladder, symbolizing a ladder match for the interim TNT title vs the TNT title.
I didn't like this. He used a bunch of shoot terms here completely blowing any kayfabe out of the water and just kind of rambled on about a bunch of internet wrestling topics.
Anna Jay, John Silver, Mark Sterling and Jade Cargill were interviewed by Sterling. John said Anna would challenge and beat Jade for the TBS title. Anna said she will do whatever it takes to win. Jade pointed to the title and said "this is That B*tch Show".
We had a quick cutaway to an empty stage then the lights went out for the House of Black.
Malakai Black and Brody King vs The Varsity Blonds
Pillman didn't want to springboard on Brody when challenged. Brody then gcame around and blindsided Griff with Griff hitting his head off the stairs which didn't look good. Pillman got 2v1'd and Griff got right back up then sent out. Black then got Pillman up for suplex and threw him to Brody for a slam and a win. Why did Griff get up after that bump?
Pac then was talking on the screen with a blindfold over his eyes. He said he is beyond Black's reach. He showed the justice card with the eyes taken out of the king and then took off the blindfold with his eyes seemingly being okay now. Pac is hard enough to understand without the sound effects.
We had a video segment on Lance Archer and Adam Page. Page told him to come and take a shot at the title but if he wants a fight, he will bring one. Jake said it was time for Page to bite the dust.
Rocky Romero and Trent did a promo and said they were tired of losing to The Elite. He said they are the guys to beat the Young Bucks and said they would re-unite one more night.
Frankie Kazarian vs Lance Archer
This was a 10 minute squash that was boring, one-sided and total time filler. They must have had something else planned here and told them to go long to cover it. This did nothing for either one of them.
Tony, Dan Lambert and Archer were then in the ring. Dan said Page wasn't trained for this. Lance said he would just show us what he could do and went to do something to Kaz on the ramp. Page then came out and they yelled in each others faces. They traded shots, Page went down then hit him with a boot before Archer could get him with a chair. Page then clotheslined him over the ropes. Well, I guess that program is settled. Archer looked like a goof here.
Dante Martin, Lee Moriarty and Matt Sydal were interviewed. Dante said Matt has been like a brother to him and Lee said they would watch his back until his brother returns. Starks and Hobbs then did a promo. Starks said no one is his friend and he is all alone. Hobbs said Dante needs to watch his front, back and side to side. Lio Rush and Lethal were nowhere to be found in this segment.
Red Velvet and Kris Statlander were interviewed when Leila Hirsch interrupted. She blamed them for losing on Rampage. She said Kris cost them both thousands of dollars. Hirsch nailed Red from behind hard then armbarred Kris.
Serena Deeb vs Skye Blue
Deeb bullied her around and hit a neckbreaker over the middle rope. We got a very generous shot of Sky's butt and he had her neck catapulted into the ropes. We got another butt shot and Deeb took a neutralizer variation. Deeb then banged her knee off the mat and won with a tequila sunrise.
Lambert, Sky and Page were interviewed. Page offered himself for a match with Moxley on Friday and it was made official. They went over the history of Trent and Romero vs the Bucks.
We got a video package for Hook for his match against Serpentico on Rampage and they also announced Jade vs Anna Jay. A ladder match for the TNT title was also announced for next week as was Cole vs OC, Jericho/Santana and Ortiz vs Daniel Garcia and 2.0.
Matt Hardy, HFO and Andrade were in the back. Hardy said he was giving Andrade 51% of his HFO but said he would be CEO and run day to day operations while Andrade was president. He said they would be the "AHFO" now and said the merger is official.
Bowens was dressed up as Darby and a fake Sting ran him over. Max then hit the fake Sting with a baseball bat and said it is showtime. He mentioned crooked politicians and said something like they would make Sting look worse than Starrcade 1997. Max then broke a skateboard.
The Acclaimed vs Sting and Darby Allin
The Acclaimed took over early. Darby took a chair to the gut by Bowens before the bell. Darby then had a chair put around his neck and had it rammed into the post.
The match started with Sting going in 1v2. Both Acclaimed members were thrown into the steps. Sting missed a stinger splash in the corner with the turnbuckle off. We went to picture in picture break and came back with Sting making a comeback. Sting to nailed with a boombox outside by Bowens. They were setting up Sting for a move then Darby came flying in and stopped it. He then did the coffin drop on The Acclaimed outside and hit a code red for 2.
Darby took a Bowens superkick then a top rope elbow from Max. Bowens took a hard fall on his shoulder on a backdrop onto the ramp. Sting went ot the announce desk then did a dive (!) on Max through a table. Darby then hit a coffin drop on Bowens and won it.
Darby being out and The Acclaimed not being able to win it made them look dumb here especially against an old Sting. I also didn't like Darby recovering so easy from the chair spot. The Sting dive was cool though and Darby's stuff looked good as usual.
Overall thoughts: Not a good one at all here with kayfabe being broken, intergender matches that made no sense, super long squashes and heels being made to look stupid.
