AEW Dark Episode #79 3/9/2021

AEW Dark Episode #79 3/9/2021

I missed this one when it originally aired and wanted to make sure I covered it.

Angel Fashion vs. Powerhouse Hobbs

Angel gets grabbed and thrown into the corner where Hobbs pounds on him. Hobbs overhead throws him then spinebusters him. Hobbs splashes him in the corner then hits an emerald flowsion for the quick win.

SCU vs. Azriel & Danny Limelight

DL armdrags Kaz and dances and Kaz monkey flips him. DL hits some chest kicks on Kaz then Kaz german suplexes him for 2. Daniels gut shots DL then Kaz hits the flipping neckbreaker for 2. Azriel gets in and hits some punches then a flying kick in the corner on Daniels, but Daniels comes back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker.

Daniels gets tossed out and takes kicks from DL and DL hits a running knee and a roll into a double stomp. Dl slingshot sentons Daniels then jumps off of Azriel's back for a splash. Kaz hits a nice leg lariat on Az then catches him with a forearm. Kaz then combo's DL to take him down.

Kaz hits a hard lariat off the ropes then legdrops Danny as he pokes his head through the middle rope. Daniels holds onto Az's arms while on the 2nd rope then single leg stomps him on the way down. DL gets thrown into a facekick from Daniels and then a high low. Kaz flip backdrops Az onto Daniels' knees for the win. Azriel's arm was kind of under the ropes during the count which Taz pointed out, yet it wasn't stopped.

SCU hit some double teams I hadn't seen them do before here but this went a little long for what everyone knew was going to be a squash. Danny got almost nothing in here.

The Pretty Picture(Cezar Bononi and Peter Avalon) with Ryan Nemeth vs Aaron Solow, Brick Aldridge and Dean Alexander

Solow hits some armdrags on Nemeth early. Ogogo on commentary says Brick is the strongest man he has ever seen in his life. Brick gorilla presses Ryan, but Ryan escapes with a nice dropkick. Peter gets caught on a crossbody and slammed by Brick as Brick kips up after.

Ogogo actually tries to put Brick and Dean over here but Excalibur and Taz keep interrupting it. Dean takes a triple team from his opponents that ends in a Nemeth dropkick. Nemeth hits a neat delayed backdrop and poses after.

Solow euro uppercuts two opponents in the corner. He tries to clothesline Cezar off the top but Cezar ducks and Ryan gets it instead. Solow gets caught from the top but Cezar then is deadlift suplexed. Nemeth neckbreakers Dean and wins it. Well, Brick looked good in the one move he got to do. This really wasn't too bad considering the circumstances with Nemeth getting a lot of time.
Baron Black vs Lee Johnson

Hey, Baron Black might actually get some offense in here. Taz says he doesn't care who wins. They trade headscissors to start then push and slap each other. Lee dives on Black on the outside but Black catches him and exploder suplexes him on the floor.

Back in and Black hits his spinning clothesline in the corner then an atomic drop into a backcracker. Black spinning backbreakers Lee for 2. Black runs the ropes into a  nice Lee dropkick. Lee hits some clotheslines and kips up. Lee rolls on a death valley driver but this is the big time on AEW Dark and that's only worth 2.

Black dragon screws Lee then puts him in the texas cloverleaf. Lee escapes and they trade strikes. Black hits a release german but Lee pops right back up for a win with the blue thunder bomb. Lee bled frm the mouth. This went too long for what these guys can do and they did too many big moves for a random match like this.

Aaron Frye, D3, Jon Cruz & Vary Morales vs. The Dark Order (Alex Reynolds, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) (w/Negative One)

Taz said if anyone from the D-O could fit into Team Taz, it's Stu, as he hates people as much as Taz does. Alex hits D3 with a running euro uppercut off the ropes. After taking some shots, Frye does a springboard elbow off the 2nd rope onto Uno and tags out.

Vary gets popped in the mouth by Uno but comes back with a satellitle ddt. Uno hits a nice stunner on D3. Cruz crossbodies Colt but is caught and Colt uses Cruz to wipe out his partners in the corner. Fyre gets tombstoned ontop of Vary and Colt holds Cruz on his shoulders up in the corner for well over a minute before dropping him for the Chicago skyline. Colt then picks up the win. I really didn't have any issues with this except for the Chicago skyline gag at the end as it wasn't believeable. -1 then kips up after.

Cameron Stewart & Ryzin vs. Varsity Blonds

Cameron wore his glasses into the ring. Pillman hits a bad high kick early. Cameron is from Prince Edward Island in Canada and Griff splashes him in the corner. Pillman neckbreakers Cameron into a Griff leg drop. Ryzin distracts the ref and nails Pillman in the back.

Ryzin does a sitout gordbuster to Pillman which I haven't seen before. Pillman's head goes onto the middle buckle and Ryzin kicks the buckle. Ryzin totally misses on a swanton and takes a foot to the back of the head. Griff comes in and cleans house and does a nice back body drop on Stewart. Griff hits an awesome spinning forearm and wins it. As always, Griff was by far the Michaels of this team here and looked good as he usually does.
Diamante vs Savannah Thorne

Thorne hits a rolling snapmare into a meteora on Diamante. Diamante then german suplexes her and hits some crossfaces. Thorne takes a hard dropkick near the bottom rope and Diamante chokes her.

Diamante does a stunner from the wheelbarrow position then wins it in a with code red in a short squash. Diamante was stiff here.

Fuego del Sol vs QT Marshall with Nick Comoroto

They slap each other to start and QT bullies Sol a little. Sol running hurricanrana's QT then does a spinning headscissors. Sol goes for the tornado ddt but it doesn't happen, then he slingshots into a powerslam.

QT takes a shot at Sol's mask then hits him with a crossface. Sol gets another tornado ddt attempt in but is popped up into a nice forearm. Sol hits a top rope hurricanrana. QT hits some nice punches and pops up Sol into a dropkick. Sol hits an asai moonsault for 2 and a yoshi-tonic for 2.

QT hits a backbreaker into a flatliner. Sol handstands out of a cutter then hits a swinging ddt/tornado ddt, which he never hits. QT rolls all the way out. QT gets put back in and Sol double jumps him but is caught with a cutter. QT then hits another cutter and wins it. This wasn't bad, just it was a little slow and went on way too long.

Kip Sabian (w/Penelope Ford) vs. Carlie Bravo (w/Shawn Dean)

Kip traps Bravo's arm and does a flag salute while he stands on him, which mocks Bravo. Taz and Ogogo argue over American football vs non-American football. Bravo headstands out of a headscissors then hiptosses and dropkicks Kip.

Kip shotgun dropkicks Bravo outside the ring. Back in and Kip keeps control. Kip hits a penalty kick on Bravo. Dean comes back with some punches. Bravo slingshot legdrops Kip but Kip comes back with a knee. Kip bridged him on the ropes then hit a twisting neckbreaker for the win. This went on too long and dragged a little.

Abadon vs. Kataline Perez

Perez has curly pink hair. Abadon meteora's her in the corner. Abadon hits a nice release german suplex and bangs her head off the mat. Abadon stalks her outside and lariats her on the floor. Perez drops Abadon with a clothesline which should not be happening then Abadon grabs her by the throat and slams her. Abadon then hits a gory special neckbreaker and wins it. Abadon should never go down and she is showing too much skin for being a monster.

I will not be reviewing the Sonny Kiss and Joey Janela match.

Overall thoughts: Not a bad edition of Dark, though it's still Dark and not so much a real show but a collection of squashes. The show was only a little over 90 minutes and there weren't as many complete wastes of time matches as other weeks.
