AEW Dynamite 3/10/2021
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2021/03/aew-dynamite-332021.html
Matt Jackson (w/Nick Jackson) vs. Rey Fenix (w/PAC)
They show SCU in the crowd. They didn't win the Battle Royale at the PPV, but I guess that didn't count towards their break up. Rey flips out of a hiptoss early and does a springboard flip on the ropes into an armdrag. Matt walks around outside and Rey hurricanrana's him. Rey does a springboard tope then a springboard armdrag on Matt outside of the ring. Then he followed with a flip dive.
Things slow down. They fight up on the 2nd rope and Rey tries to hurricanrana Matt but gets powerbombed. Of course, a 2nd rope powerbomb is only worth a 2 count. Rey rolls out and gets his back rammed into the apron then Matt slingshot sentons him. Matt works the back for a bit and takes a springboard sobat kick. Rey then hits a springboard dropkick from the middle to top rope. Rey then rolls into a jumping cutter on Matt. They trade punches and Rey buckingham drops Matt for 2. Matt goes on the ramp and Rey tries to run the top rope into a kick. Matt avoids it though and hits a slingshot canadian destroyer. Then he does one on the floor to Rey. Of course this isn't the end as Rey beats the 10 count. Matt then hits a top rope elbow....only for 2. Matt then puts rey into the scorpion deathlock but that doesn't end it either.
Rey ends up dropkicking Nick outside through the ropes and Matt slides out to superkick Pac on the outside. Rey moonsaults into a german which Matt flips out of. Rey gets superkicked and then kips up into an enzugiri. They trade more shots, including forearms and superkicks at the same time and Rey sit out drivers him to win.
This was indy garbage that went almost 15 minutes. And even worse, it was the opener, so people have to try and follow a match with tons of big moves and flips.
Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley are drinking over a fire on the inside of a house. Eddie talks about going to jail. Mox said Omega wanted to blow him up but failed and blamed the faulty explosions on Impact Wrestling. Jon said he and Eddie patched things up. Jon said if you are going to flash a weapon, you better use it.
Not a fan of this. Mox just survived a very dangerous match and should be out of commission and off screen for a while. Instead he is just chilling and having fun with Eddie.
Cody Rhodes (w/Arn Anderson) vs. Seth Gargis
Cody gives a fan at ringside his belt. Cody forearms Seth down and running powerslams him. Cody then puts him in the figure four and Seth taps in a waste of time nothing squash.
Tony Schiavone comes in. He asks about Cody's shoulder. Cody goes to talk when Penta interrupts with a translator. Penta supposedly says he is better than Cody and says if Cody is the Prince of Pro-Wrestling, he is the Lord of Lucha Libre. He said Cody lost at Revolution but is lucky that he didn't hurt his arm enough to not be able to pick up hit new kid. Cody then chases after him.
Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy are at the arcade. That's exactly where I'd look for them. Chuck wants one more match with Miro and said he will be his butler forever if he loses. Chuck wants to put arcade machines outside the ring for their match so he can put Miro's head through them. Boy does that sound stupid.
Tony Schiavone and Sting have their weekly talking segment. Sting calls Darby a dangerous man. Archer and Jake Roberts then come out. They say they are taking their own time since they aren't getting any. Archer says he will take more than time if he has to. Tony interrupts saying this is Sting's time. Archer agrees to leave and says he will give him his time. Uh, okay. Lance could win something and he might get some time. Sting then says thank you and that's the end of it.
Lee Johnson and QT Marshall are interviewed. QT said his emotions got the best of him at the PPV. QT says Lee is here to pick up another victory.
We run into sound issues at this point and miss an Ethan Page promo.
Ethan Page vs. Lee Johnson (w/QT Marshall)
Lee gets dropped with a punch to start. He leapfrogs and hits a nice dropkick but is punched again. We go to picture-in-picture break and during it Lee plancha's Page. Page bridges him on the rails and then backbreakers him. Page hits a spinning backbreaker and Lee slaps him. The sound issues continue as we return with Lee hitting a neckbreaker then Lee blue thunder bombs him for 2. We get loud sound issue chants for "defense".
Page slams Lee off the top then springboards off the bottom rope for 2 count on a cutter. Lee jumps off the middle rope and holds his knee when he lands. Page then pump kicks him and Lee rolls out. Lee comes back in and gets thrown on a razor's edge for the Page win. I really don't understand why they had Lee lose this since they had him win last week and the sound issues really hurt this.
Page beats up on Lee after and Dustin Rhodes comes out for the save. QT Marshall then walks away, hopefully to a place with better sound.
Alex Marvez takes us to see what Page is doing with Matt's money. He said he got whiskey, a saddle and a riding lawnmower. The Dark Order jumps on and wants to ride. Everyone jumps on except Alan Angels, who they say is going over the weight limit. They go to get ice cream and leave Angels. I'm surprised that thing moved at all with all the people on it.
Tony Schiavone is supposed to interview Christian Cage but Kenny Omega, Callis, The Good Brothers and the stupid broom girls come out instead. Callis calls Kenny "The King of the Deathmatch". Callis and Kenny imply they had something to do with the bad explosion at Revolution. Then they really try to sell that they planned this and liked how it worked out which was just dumb. Eddie Kingston then comes out.
Don said he hired him in Impact but he had to fire him because he couldn't grab the brass ring. They set up a timer, giving Eddie 10 seconds to leave and mock the failed bomb explosion at Revolution. They do a lewd sexual gesture. They said Eddie "doesn't break character" and Kenny challenges Eddie to punch him. Eddie does then gets beaten up and Moxley helps clear out the heels. Christian Cage then came out and went face to face with Kenny Omega. Kenny tries to hit him and Callis pulls him out of an unprettier.
This segment was awful with them trying to sell the failed explosions as planned and the Eddie "doesn't break character" line.
I will not tonight nor ever be reviewing a match with Nyla Rose in it so we will be skipping that one.
AEW TNT Title Match - Darby Allin (c) vs. Scorpio Sky
They fist bump to start. Darby should not be out here wrestling after the big street fight. Despite him going through glass during it, he is no worse for wear than usual.
They grapple early. Darby botches a slingshot flip over the ropes and hurts his ankle. We go to picture-in-picture break, where Scorp works him with submissions during it. Sky drops him with a right hand. Darby hits a stunner soon after and hits a code red for 2. Darby does a nice sell on a facekick and then takes a german in the buckles. Darby goes for a tope and gets a cutter on the outside instead which only ends up being worth a 2 count.
Darby goes for a coffin drop off the top and is powerbombed, which again only is good for 2. Darby recovers soon after to reverse a TKO into a roll-up pin. It felt like the ending was a little out of nowhere and the match was just not anything special except for 2 spots which meant nothing.
Darby slaps Sky on the back, and Sky heel hooks him, seemingly turning heel.
The Inner Circle War Council
Jericho says they need a new outlook and maybe a new member. MJF says maybe it is time to let someone go. Sammy Guevara then comes out. Jericho questions him. Sammy has a video to show us and we see MJF, Santana and Ortiz and Hager. MJF says we need new leadership and we should get rid of Jericho. They agree and MJF fesses up and says "oh well". They look like they will beat up Jericho but then turn around and face MJF.
Jericho says they talk to each other every single day and says since he brought him into the Inner Circle, he will be the one to take him out. He then tells him he is fired. MJF begs for mercy as they go to beat him up. MJF says he wasn't trying to take over the Inner Circle, because he was too busy trying to build his own. The lights go out and Wardlow, Tully, FTR and Shawn Spears then appear in the ring. Then they all brawl. Hager gets a bottle broken over his head and Spears chairs Sammy. Spears shoves Sammy face first into a chair with his foot like a curbstomp. Santana and Ortiz get handcuffed and Wardlow hits his awful looking knee strike on Jericho. FTR puts Santana and Ortiz in piledrivers and Tully spikes them as they are handcuffed. MJF punches Jericho in the head with his diamond ring, cutting open Jericho. Jericho begs for mercy and takes the bat bottom to the stomach and the bat top to the head. Jericho then gets powerbombed through a table off the ramp by Wardlow with clear crash pads being there. The announcers of course ignore the crash pads.
I liked the show closing angle. I haven't been a fan of the Inner Circle since Day 1 because they just seemed like too people who had no business being together. At least now they have a purpose. MJF's new stable isn't that great though it could have been worse.
Overall thoughts: An awful show saved by a good ending. Trying to cover for the failed explosion instead of just ignored it sucked and Kenny talking to Eddie about not breaking character was also wretched.
