MLW Fusion #122: Filthy Island 2/17/2021

MLW Fusion #122: Filthy Island 2/17/2021

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2021/02/mlw-fusion-121-2102021.html

Tom Lawlor tells Dom Garrini there is a problem with catering at the port and there will be no Spam. Dom says if we are having Fight Island, we've gotta have Spam. Tom tells him to talk to Cunningham at the port and says we need a favor. He gives Dom what appears to be a bottle of lubricant and says, "it's not for him, it's for you".

Tom Lawlor and Dan Lambert are at the commentators booth with bottles of water and ripoff Spam. They run down the card. Dan says Low-Ki means low energy, low ticket sales, low IQ and so forth and he is worried Ki won't draw a big enough house.

They play the music with a boombox on a cooler and Dominic Garrini enters with a money bag.

They have a ring with no ropes.

Mauna Loa vs Dominic Garrini

We open up the money bag and it has spam in it. Loa body blocks Garrini then splashes him. Dom goes to Tom and complains that he is huge. Tom says "he won't be able to get up, he'll be like a turtle on his back" and says "treat him like Emmanuel Yarborough".

Dom judo throws him then puts a grounded choke on for the easy win at 36 seconds.

Los Parks do a promo. They said they want all the gold for their new boss. They said they won't let Contra take their gold and the belt would be a nice gift for the heads of Azteca Underground. One of Park's kids asks him to go for Hammerstone and he says he might since he is strong but dumb. Park Sr. then challenges Hammerstone.

We get the usual MLW announcers and they are in a dark jungle. We get a nice shot of a frog.

Tom and Dan break down Low-Ki vs King Mo. Dan thinks nobody will care but Tom says the people will be here to see Mo. Dan says Kevin Ku can't return to Korea, where he is from, because he is wanted on multiple charges there.

We get an Azteca Undeground website promo and it says opportunities are available for believers.

Richard Holliday and Alexander Hammerstone arrive. Holliday isn't impressed with the trees. Hammer says it is cloudy. Richard says they should go back to the resort and get massages.

We get a recap of the de la Renta/Savio story.

The announcers says Renta gave them a note from "El Jefe" and it says blood will pour on the Aztec temples tonight for the believers.

Kevin Ku with Dominic Garrini vs Zenshi

Zenshi is in a tree and flips on Ku to start! Zenshi flips Ku then tries an SSP onto him but catches himself, then is slammed onto the apron. Zenshi does a flagpole pose off the post when thrown into it and is reverse dragon screw leg whipped.

Tom complains about the ref being slow and Ku single leg crabs Zenshi. Zenshi goes for the ropes but thereare no ropes. He grabs the post to escape but the ref won't break. Ku then puts in a full boston crab but is rolled up for 2. Ku then lariats him.Ku chops him and Tom says "that could have chopped down one of these trees". Zenshi headbutts him and Tom and Dan think its a loaded mask. Ku combos him but then is backflip kicked. Zen is thrown into the post and Ku tries to german him, but Zen hangs onto the pole.

Zen backflips out of a release dragon suplex but is then caught with another dragon suplex and Ku wins. This wasn't bad at all for not having any ropes to work with and Zenshi's entrance was classic.

The Von Erichs say they are at the high point of the Von Erich Ranch which appears to be the Grand Canyon. Marshall said Tom will pull something in the Low-Ki match and they say they will crash the show.

We go back to Mexico and we get:

Aztec Jungle Fight - Mil Muertes vs Savio Vega

Mil jumps Savio and bangs his head off a tree. They go into the jungle and the feed cuts out. Then we go to break and Alicia Atout is going to interview TJP via webcam.

Atout asks TJP what happened with Dao last week. TJP said they lost. TJP said he has been at this for a long time and has dominated every division he has been in. He said he has done all he can in the cruiserweight division and has moved on to tag teams. He said he will drag any team to success but Dao is taking the ball out of his hands while he does everything he can. TJP says Dao doesn't know what winning is and he can't teach him it. Atout says he bullied Dao. TJP said he didn't but he "can't make the final shot". Atout says Dao looks up to him and TJP says it is because he is 4'11.

Atout pushes him and TJP says he isn't here to get asked about Dao and closes the interview.

Gringo Loco vs Rocky Romero

They call Loco MLW's "answer to Super Porky". Romero gives one of the fans his jacket. Romero monkey flips him and Loco does it back. Loco gets headscissored and they armdrag each other. Tom says "you just saw more moves in 30 seconds then you will see in all my matches". Loco tries to run off the ropes but there are no ropes and he yells at Tom for it. Romero hits la magistral for 2. Loco stretches out Rocky but lets go for some reason. They chop each other and Rocky hulks up with forearms. Rocky has him on the outside and he hurricanrana's him from the ring.

Rocky puts Loco in the sofa outside and punches him. Then Rocky goes in it and Loco flip dives him knocking the sofa over. Loco flips him into a reverse DDT and misses a handspring backflip on Romero. Rocky works the arm and spins Loco's leg around which turns into a kick. Tom calls the island "The Biggest Stage of Them All". Rocky hits a jumping knee then does a tornado ddt off the post to win. This went a little slow and I think both guys were flustered about what to do without the ropes. The sofa spot was cool though.

Aztec Jungle Fight - Mil Muertes vs Savio Vega

The feed comes back as they brawl. Mil throws a piece of a branch at Savio. They trade more punches and chops and Contra interrupts.

Contra's hype man says this is a dangerous world and calls Jordan Oliver a child.  He says Jordan should have just stayed in the kiddie pool because he doesn't belong in the deep water. He said Fatu would publically execute Oliver for his actions.

We've got less than 15 minutes left here and one and a half matches left. We cut to the Von Erichs who are livestreaming from their truck.

We are told next week is a rerun of an MLW Underground episode from years ago which I will be skipping and we run down some future matches.

We cut back to Vega and Mil fighting. Vega gets choked with a vine. Mil goes down after a headbutt and Vega grabs a crowbar. Mil gets ahold of it and knocks out Savio with it. Selina gives him a shovel and says to finish the job. Mil wins and he starts digging a grave. St. Laurent says he is getting out of here and Rich Boccini says he is following.

Tom Lawlor talkes to Hammerstone and Holliday. They walk over a fish and Tom drinks from a starbucks cup they found. Hammerstone and Holliday are given VIP seats on a couch in front of the ring. Holliday refuses to sit in it. Hammerstone asks if they have spam. Tom pulls some out and opens the box with his mouth. Hammerstone leaves with Holliday and tells Tom "keep the spam coming".

We go down the top 10 rankings. Rush is #3, Lawlor is #2 and Hammerstone is #1 with Jacob Fatu still being the champ.

King Mo vs Low-Ki

The finish

We have somewhere between 4-6 minutes for this. Ki's chroma says he is a sore loser. Tom says Ki will be done for tonight. Ki hits a bunch of body punches and Mo bangs Ki's leg off the mat, then dumps his knee on the mat. Mo does a heel hook. Ki climbs on Mo's shoulders and puts on a choke. Mo goes for the ropes but there isn't one there and the ref calls it a tap out. Tom and Team Filthy are very mad.

Tom kicks the ref out then Team Filthy 3v1's Ki. The Von Erichs then arrive in a jeep and jump off of it into the ring. Everyone goes at it as "Stranglehold" plays. Tom gets thrown onto the truck from the ring and breaks the windshield. Team Filthy helps Tom off the truck and out as the show ends. This match did not live up to the hype but the post match stuff was good.

Overall thoughts: As usual, MLW fails to deliver on its hyped matches. They went out of their way here to not deliver and it's shame because this was a pretty good show otherwise. The Filthy Island concept and execution was entertaining but the double main events didn't even go 10 minutes together total.
