WWWF Championship Wrestling 9/3/1977
The next show we have is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2025/10/wwwf-championship-wrestling-9171977.html
Note - We only have a partial version of this.
"High Chief" Peter Maivia vs Joe Turco
Pete hip throws him off the lock up twice. Pete grabs his arm and side kicks him in the gut. Joe complains then he is taken down by the leg. Pete cartwheels off of the ropes then crossbodies him. Joe pulls the hair on a headlock but loses him. Joe tries it again and is put in a top wristlock. Pete then spanks him.
Pete double underhooks him and Joe ropebreaks. Joe complains about his tights being pulled. Joe tries punches and Pete messes around and ducks. Pete overhooks Joe's arms and punhes him in the head. Joe grabs the ref as he sells.
Joe kicks and clubs him. Pete flying headbutts him and euros him down several times. Pete splashes him and wins.
Thoughts: As always, Maivia is really unlike any other wrestler and has an Orange Cassidy vibe to him (in a good way). Joe was his foe here. Joe did a good job complaining to the ref and being a simple heel. It wasn't great or anything but both did what they were supposed to and I liked it.
Pete celebrates with a handstand in the corner after.
Chief Jay Strongbow and Haystacks Calhoun vs Jack Evans and Rocky Tamayo
HC takes a side headlock from RT. RT runs into him and goes down. RT side headlocks him again and then is hiptossed. HC hiptosses Jack. Jack ends up in the wrong corner and heads out.
HC armdrags RT with an armlock. RT eye pokes him to break it. RT eye rakes him more and elbows him. Jay gets in and he gets punched in the head. RT eye rakes Jay. Jay is thrown in the corner, he slides between Jack's legs and punches him outside.
Vince talks about the Manager of the Year voting. He says Lou Albano is catching up. He also says Roddy Piper, Oliver Humperdink and Homer O'Dell are getting some votes. RT double knuckle locks Jay. They criss-cross and Jay chops him. Jay knee lifts him and RT begs off.
Jack gets in. He punches Jay in the corner and stomps on him. Jack foot chokes him and chokes him. Jay's head is banged off the buckles. Jack elbows Jay in the head. Jay goes between his legs and tags out.
HC gets in. He clubs Jack and throws RT in. Hay throws both heels in the corner and splashes them. Jay then jumps on HC's back to splash them. Jack is chopped and gets tied up in the ropes. HC dances before he hits the tied up Jack. The heels are sent into each other and go down.
HC eye pokes RT in the corner. RT eye pokes and punches him back. Jay punches RT and kneelifts him. RT is sent into an HC shoulderblock and he goes down. Jay pins RT.
Thoughts: It wasn't that good. Haystacks' offense looked bad he went really easy on everyone. Jay's offense wasn't much better here with some weak kneelifts.
Vince McMahon interviews The Grand Wizard. They talk about Manager of the Year voting. Wiz is in the lead and said he didn't think there were enough brilliant people in TV land who would appreciate his brilliance and genius. He says to send in more votes as he doesn't have a big enough lead. He says he wants to have more votes than all the other managers combined. He says he's the only manager to have 2 separate WWWF champs. He says to send more and more votes. He says he knows and they know he is the manager of the year, the century and the generation.
Larry Zbyszko and Tony Garea vs Pete Doherty and Johnny Rodz
JR hits Larry with his robe before it starts then hits him before it starts.
JR hits shots on the ropes and then hip throws him. JR chinlocks him. JE chinlocks him and grabs the tights. Larry armdrags him over. JR knees him in the head and Larry back body drops him.
Tony gets in hits shots on JR. JR is thrown into the corner and goes up and over. JR runs the ropes to evade the faces and runs into a chest club from Larry. Tony armlocks JR. Pete breaks it up. JR hits punches on Tony then Pete hits punches on Tony. Pete bends over and is kicked.
Larry knees Pete in the gut. Pete takes a back body drop then Larry delay suplexes Pete for the win. Tony then chases JR to the back.
Thoughts: It was a short and entertaining squash. Pete took nice comedic types of bumps and Rodz was amazing as usual in trying to run away from the faces. I used to watch the 80's house shows and not really get why Pete and Rodz were on them so much but then you see this show and it becomes clear that these guys were really talented.
Vince McMahon interviews Tony Garea and Larry Zbyszko after. He says they will face Fuji and Tanaka for the tag titles. Tony says they are ready and says they have a good chance of pulling this off.
Overall thoughts: Only 3 matches from this show exist, sadly. Maivia/Turco was a decent squash with Maivia being entertaining. Haystacks Calhoun and Strowbow did not impress in their squash. Pete Doherty and Rodz were great jobbers in their tag match and helped create an entertaining squash. The Grand Wizard also did a fun interview. There wasn't much here, but I liked what we got.
