WWF Superstars of Wrestling 6/8/1991
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/10/wwf-superstars-of-wrestling-611991.html
We're in Rockford, Illinois at the MetroCentre. Vince says it's national shampoo week. Vince McMahon, Macho Man Randy Savage and Roddy Piper are our commentators.
Vince and Macho make puns with Macho saying he's head and shoulders above the rest. He tells Piper not to work himself into a lather.
The Big Boss Man vs Al Burke
Al attacks Boss from behind and clubs on him. Al is sent hard into the buckles. Boss leg lariats him on the ropes. The Mountie and Jimmy Hart do an inset promo. Hart says the only law and order in the WWF is The Mountie. Mountie says Boss will find out the hard way, so why doesn't he save himself some trouble and go back to Cobb County, Georgia?
Boss back elbows Al and hits him in the back. Boss hits a hard shot on Al's chest. Boss hits a nice big boot then headbutts him. Boss hits a sidewalk slam and gets the pin.
Thoughts: Boss roughed up Al a bit here before getting the easy win.
Boss handcuffs Al to the ropes after and threatens him with his night stick in true face fashion.
WWF Update
Mean Gene talks about Andre turning down managers. We see Andre turning down Jimmy Hart then getting injured by Earthquake. Gene calls it one of the most despicable things he ever witnessed.
Jake Roberts does a promo. He says there's no danger when the snake is in the bag or when a giant has his back turned. He says the danger is when you meet a man face to face and accept your wrongs. Jake says he doesn't play and neither does Lucifer.
The Warlord vs Red Tyler
War clubs on Red and flying shoulders him. War gutwrench suplexes him. War lariats him over and Red takes a nasty bump for it. War full-nelson's him and submits him.
Thoughts: It was your usual quick Warlord squash here. Red took a nasty bump on the neck.
We get a quick music video that lasts about 5 seconds on Sid Justice.
WWF Event Center
Sean says Sid Justice will be an incredible force in the WWF. Haku and Bobby Heenan do a promo. Heenan says he has contracts coming out of his ears. He says Haku will wrestle anybody in the WWF. Haku talks in his language. Bobby says that's Haku's way of saying he isn't afraid of anyone.
Bret Hart does a promo. He said a lot of people didn't think he could do it in singles wrestling. He said it's going to be easy for him. He says he's in a groove and has set his sights on Mr. Perfect and the IC Title. He says he knows Heenan will throw all of his men at him but he says he will find a way to get past them. He says he's on a roll and will keep on rolling.
The British Bulldog vs W.T. Jones
Winston the bulldog is with Davey. Davey shoves WT off the lock-up. WT side headlocks Davey and Davey hiptosses him. Davey hits an armdrag and a slam. Davey chinlocks WT. Macho says Red Tyler can team with WT and Vince says no one will team with Red after the 360 he took on his neck.
Mr. Perfect and Bobby Heenan do an inset promo. Perfect says he'll give Davey a one way ticket to the dog pound if he goes in the ring with him. And Heenan says he knows what happens there. Macho says it's the same as the glue factory.
Davey suplexes WT then chinlocks him. Davey hits a headbutt then a stiff lariat. Davey corner lariats him then hits a running powerslam. Davey then picks up the win.
Thoughts: Commentary was entertaining here with them talking about anything but the match. The match wasn't anything special and Davey won as expected. I was surprised Red Tyle got namedropped here.
We get an ad for The WBF Championship.
The Berzerker vs Gary Jackson
Gary is still active as of 2024, wrestling for Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling. No entrance for Berz here.
Berz rushes Gary and hits a face kick. Berz jumps around and clubs Gary. Berz puts Gary on the ropes and facekicks him. The Berzerker and Mr. Fuji do an inset promo. Berz just says "huss" a lot and Fuji says he will turn him loose on anyone in the WWF.
Berz hits a slam and a world's strongest slam. Berz then throws Gary out hard to the floor. Berz then wins via countout.
Thoughts: It was your usual wild Berzerker squash with him jumping around and yelling while doing some facekicks. It's always fun to see Gary even if he never gets anything in.
Berz slingshot knee drops Gary on the floor after.
WWF Event Center
Greg Valentine does a promo. He says he changed his mind about a lot of things in 1991. He says there's no more Jimmy Hart. He says he's by himself but he thinks better and sees things this way without Jimmy confusing him. He says he' a wrestlers legend and says it's Hammertime.
The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart do a promo on The Legion of Doom. Saggs says everyone wants a shot at the tag titles and asks what makes them so special. Saggs says they aren't so special and not nasty enough to take it off of them. Knobbs says they aren't scared of anyone. Knobbs says they will nastysize anyone who stands in their way.
Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs Dan Johnson
Dan's built well and has a huge neck. Ricky hits punches and Dan messes up a chop sell. Dan eye rakes him and slams him. Vince talks about Macho/Steamboat at WM3. Dan gets another slam in and Ricky hits a side kick. Ricky fist drops him and hits a shot to the gut. Ricky backfists him then slams him. Ricky hits a top rope chop on Dan. Ricky hit a top rope crossbody and gets the win.
Thoughts: Selling wasn't exactly Dan's strong suit here and it was hard to buy some of Ricky's offense against him. Ricky won as expected here and it was cool to hear Macho talk about his WM3 match with Steamboat.
This month's WWF Magazine has Jake Roberts on the cover and an article on IRS.
The Funeral Parlor
Paul Bearer says everyone is scared to enter the parlor. He says his guest is like him and it's Irwin R. Schyster.
IRS says he's happy to be here. He calls the fans tax cheats and says Paul runs his business by the books. IRS says Paul has a tax refund coming real soon. He says there are two things certain in this world - death and taxes. He says it doesn't matter who it is, they will learn that they will pay the penalty when they deal with IRS. Paul then thanks him.
Thoughts: I loved this segment. These are two completely different personalities and one wouldn't think they'd have much to talk about. Instead, IRS busted out the death and taxes line and said Paul is getting a tax refund. Brilliant.
We get another 5 second music video on Sid Justice.
Virgil vs Bob Bradley
Bob's looking good as always here as one of the regular jobbers on this show. Bob tries to box Virg. Virg blocks his punches and punches him down. Virg atomic drops him and punches him. Bob goes over the top rope in a nice bump. Ted Dibiase and Sherri do a promo. Ted says Virgil is taking the biggest gamble of his life stepping in the ring with him and says it's a sure thing that he'll lose it all.
Virg step up enzugiri's Bob and hits more punches. Bob eye rakes him and gets some shots in. Virg hits him in the gut. Piper goes off about how he and Virg don't gamble. Virg knocks Bob down with punches. Virg then taps out Bob with the million dollar dream.
Thoughts: It was interesting see Virgil use Dibiase's finish here. It was Virgil's only move of the match here as he did little else but punches.
Sgt. Slaughter vs Buck Zumhofe
They talk about the WBF Championship and Piper says he wants to crash the event. Sarge has Col. Mustafa and General Adnan with him.
Sarge clubs on Buck then chokes him with a belt. Sarge clotheslines him with a belt. Sarge drops him throat first on the top rope. Sarge knee drops Buck and stomps on him. Sarge clubs Buck's back then camel clutches him. Buck submits.
Thoughts: Sarge should have been DQ'd for using the belt here. It was a quick squash with Buck getting nada in.
Mustafa camel clutches Buck and Sarge boots Buck while he's in it.
The Ultimate Warrior does a promo. He says The Warriors should follow him to the personal fitness expo and head to the WBF Championship to see the greatest bodybuilders of all time.
WWF Event Center
The Orient Express do a promo. Mr. Fuji says he's proud of his Express. He says part of his training is making blood come out of your nose and making your eyes pop up. Tanaka says they have been training hard for every tag team.
Tugboat does a promo. He says the competition keeps getting meaner and stronger and says the managers are getting more and more devious. Tug says it'll be like going into the deepest ocean or a battle between a sardine and a great white shark as he is coming after wrestlers with everything he has got.
Thoughts: I feel like we saw similar version of the same two promos before.
Next week has Tugboat and The Bushwhackers vs Earthquake and The Nasty Boys. Mr. Perfect will also visit The Funeral Parlor.
Overall thoughts: This wasn't one of the better Superstars episodes. There were no star vs star matches nothing of note really happened on this one. We did see our first Sid Justice videos on the show though. There was lots of WBF shilling though. I wouldn't recommend this one and would give it like a 3 out of 10.
