AEW Dynamite 3/27/2024

AEW Dynamite 3/27/2024

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/03/aew-dynamite-3202024.html

Will Ospreay vs Katsuyori Shibata

KS gets his back and goes for the armbar then Will ropebreaks. Will snapmares him and chinlocks him. Will trips him then KS headlock taekovers him. Will headscissors him then Will ducks a PK. Will chops him then takes forearms. Will shotgun dropkicks him then hits forearms. Will dropkicks him in the corner then plancha's him.

KS face kicks him off the apron to the floor. KS euros him then suplexes him on the floor. KS kicks him in the back outside the ring then goes for the figure four. Will hits chops and takes a backdrop. We go to PiP break and return.

Will handspring corkscrew kicks him. Will is thrown into the rails and takes a face kick. Will springboards off the rail, hitting a forearm. Will then springboards off the ropes with a forearm. Will hits forearms and is dropped with one. KS face kicks him in the corner then KS hits forearms and uppercuts. Will face kicks him in the corner then KS corner dropkicks him. KS hits an underhook suplex then Will abdominal stretches him. KS does an octopus hold.

They trade germans, Will superkicks him then KS blocks a handspring back corkscrew kick. Will slaps him then is slapped back. Will blocks a PK and they trade forearms. KS chest kicks him then Will kips up and enzugiri's him. KS puts him in a choke then sleeper suplexes him. KS pus him in another choke then is pulled out to the apron. Will springboard dropkicks him as he hangs over the middle rope then hits an os cutter for 2. KS lariats him and they lariat each other at the same time. Will hook kicks him then backdrops KS. Will hits a hidden blade then tiger driver 91's him. Will then hits a hidden blade and wins it.

I'm not a big fan of openers going long. I bet this killed the ratings. It was an okay wrestling match but I don't think having Shibata take bumps on his head is a real good idea considering he shouldn't even be wrestling due to various medical issues. They didn't overdo it too much here but the tiger driver '91 really should have put Shibata down immediately.

They shake hands and hug after, despite Will being a heel in a heel group.

We get a video on Bryan Danielson.

The Young Bucks are interviewed by Renee. One of them gets mad when she asks a question and they ask where Alex Marvez is. One of them says they came back to AEW with goals and so far, retired Sting and restructured The Elite with Kazuchika Okada. They asked Okada to watch their match from the back tonight. The one Buck says they want the AEW Tag Titles back and said they beat Private Party tonight. They said lightning never strikes the same place twice and tells Renee to smile more.

We see Kazuchika Okada arrive in a red car.

AEW World Tag Title Tournament Quarterfinal - The Young Bucks vs Private Party

Zay and Matt pieface each other. Zay rolls up Matt and takes a forearm. Private Party stop a double team with pin attempts. PP takes stereo flips then do stereo superkicks. They then do stereo topes outside. Zay pounds on Matt outside. Quen is thrown over the rails and PP does the silly string over the rails. Zay tornado ddt's Matt. Nick and Quen get on the rail and Nick falcon arrowws him on the floor. Okada is seen shaking his head in approval in the back. Quen is suplexed onto Matt's knees.

We go to PiP break and return. Quen is catapulted into a kick from Nick then Nick is pushed off the top to the floor. Quen hits a side effect on Matt. Zay cutters Nick over the top rope then Zay hits an asai moonsault outside on Nick. Zay springboard crossbodies Nick then Matt lariats Zay. Zay takes a sliced bread + powerbomb combo from the Bucks for 2.

Zay back enzugiri's Matt. Quen takes a shot to the spine then is german suplexed. Nick germans Quen on the apron then Quen rolls up Matt for 2. Nick gets crotched up top then Matt is pushed into him then Nick takes a gin n guice. PP hits more bang for your buck for 2. Nick grabs the bell then Matt low blows Zay. Quen hits Matt with a title belt for 2.

Quen misses a 630 on Matt. Quen takes an EVP trigger which the Bucks botch due to Nick slipping. The Bucks then win.

It was flippy indy crap as expected with people taking bumps on the floor to start and later on the apron and still being able to win it. And to the surprise of no one, the Bucks won.

Don Callis does a promo. He said Swerve's House comes tumbling down as the tornado known as Konosuke Takeshita comes. Don said they destroyed Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho. Don said he's sick of hearing about Swerve's house. He said Swerve's House is on his street and neighborhood and all of those are his. Don says Takeshita will take everything from him to be #1 contender.

Mercedes Mone arrives in the back.

Tony Hawk and Darby Allin do a promo. Darby said he was going to climb Mt. Everest but he broke his foot. He said he was going to work with Tony on a skate park project to fund the building of them. Darby said he wouldn't be here without skate parks. Darby said he has another plan since he can't climb Everest and he lets Tony use his foot to do skateboard tricks.

Chris Jericho and Hook do a promo. Chris said he wanted to see if Hook was as good as everyone says. He said Hook exceeded expectations. He said he never had a wrestling school or managed anyone. He said his skills are raw and said he'd be happy to give him any advice he has. Chris says he's hear for him. Hook says he'll take advice from him because he's Chris Jericho. But he says he's Chris Jericho and he knows who he is. Chris says he knows who Hook is and who Hook can be. They then pound fists.

Winner gets TBS Title shot - Anna Jay vs Skye Blue vs Kris Statlander vs Willow Nightingale

I don't really see the need for this since the rankings exist and should be determining who gets this shot.

Skye superkicks Kris then Anna rolls up Willow. Anna side kicks Willow then runs into Skye off the apron, knocking her onto Kris. Willow hip attacks Anna then running boots her. Willow low crossbodies Anna while she is seated.

Skye foot chokes Willow then ddt's her. Kris slams and sliding lariats Skye. Anna headhunters Skye. Kris shoulders over Anna then Skye trips Kris. Willow pounces Skye outside then Willow taunts Mone. We go to PiP break and return.

All four girls fight at once. Skye facewash kicks Willow on the ropes. Kris ki krushers Skye for 2 then Anna superplexes Kris for 2. Willow sentons Anna while she tries to pin Kris. Skye hurricanrana's Willow out of the doctor bomb attempt. Skye hits code blue on Willow for 2. Kris hits a powerbomb on her knees into Skye then Anna gori bombs Kris onto Skye.

Willow and Kris go face to face. Skye breaks it up then pushes Willow into Kris. Willow death valley drivers Skye onto the apron. Kris and Anna trade. Anna rolls her up for 2 then Anna spinning heel kicks Kris. Willow doctor bombs Anna and wins it.

It was your usual 4 way with mostly just 2 people wrestling the whole time. It was fast paced with a lot of action but pretty typical.

Julia Hart nails Willow with the TBS Title after. Mercedes Mone stares down Julia.

Dustin Rhodes is interviewed. He said it seems like Dustin Rhodes started 2024 with a bang. He said every match he has had is good then The Butcher walks in. Dustin does a motion like Butcher smells and Butcher says it's his mustache. Butcher said he wants to fight him on Rampage and they agree to it. Dustin said Butcher will find out why he is a natural born legend. He said everyone loves him including Canada.

Toni Storm is with the head of Turner Classic Movies. He congratulates her. Toni tells him chin up, tits out and to watch for the shoe.

Swerve Strickland does a promo. He said to be #1, you gotta hold championship gold. Swerve said they have different motivations and his is history.

AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament Quarterfinal - Best Friends (Orange Cassidy and Trent Beretta) vs The Undisputed Kingdom (Mike Bennett and Matt Taven)

OC knocks Taven off the apron to start. Mike lariats Trent then Trent topes Taven. Mike tope con hilos Trent and Taven. OC then top rope coffin drops Kingdom. Mike chops and boots Trent. Taven dropkicks Trent then Trent germans Taven twice. Trent double knee presses an opponent down then Mike piledrivers Trent on the apron. We go to PiP break and return.

Trent is catapulted into a kick then an elbow off the ropes from Taven. Trent takes a spinebuster but gets his knees up on Taven's asai moonsault. OC tope rope crossbodies Mike then bangs Taven's head off the buckles. OC top rope crossbodies Taven then OC stunners Mike. Taven sliding knees OC. OC takes a proton pack for 2. Mike takes a beach break + double stomp for 2. Taven superkicks Trent then Trent tornado ddt's Trent. OC spinning ddt's Taven then Trent flying knees Taven.

Strong gets on the apron, Chuck Taylor pulls him down and Strong hits Chuck. OC topes Strong outside. Taven is crotched by Chuck up top and Trent jack knife pins Matt to win it.

They did too much here with an apron piledriver having little effect on Trent. I didn't like Taven and Mike losing here as they are the ROH champs and should be protected.

Best Friends go to high five after then The Bucks gets on the stage then go back down through a lift.

Renee interviews Kyle O'Reilly. Kyle says it's a deep roster in AEW and there's no such thing as an easy match. He said he will be on Collision proving he belongs.

We see Adam Copeland do a promo after his match with Christian. He says he's sore and bloody but he got the TNT Title. He says it feels like the first time he properly won a title since 2011. He said that chapter with Christian is closed and said it's time to move on. He said The Cope Open is back on Collision with the TNT Title.

AEW Title #1 Contender - Swerve Strickland vs Konosuke Takeshita

I don't understand how this is for the #1 Contendership when both just lost at the PPV.

They shake hands and don't let go. KT forearms him and Swerve does a weird flip on the ropes. Swerve kicks him in the leg then KT flying lariats him. Samoa Joe comes out.

Swerve running corner euros KT then 2nd rope euros him in the back of the neck. Swerve neckbreakers him over the ropes then backbreakers him. Swerve rolls him but gets brainbustered. Swerve rebound germans him and is forearmed out of the ring.

We go to PiP break and return. KT has some kind of hold on him then Swerve grabs his face. They trade shots and KT is back body dropped to the floor. Swerve then handstands off the apron and hurricanrana's him. Swerve crossbodies him off the top for 2. KT knocks him down with a forearm. Swerve rolls and is caught with doi fives. KT basement dropkicks him then tope con hilos him outside.

KT is on the buckles and Swerve ddt's him down as he sits there. Swerve does a spiral tap off the top for 2. KT poisonrna's him then blue thunders him for 2. Swerve drops him with a shot. Swerve rolls and takes a jumping knee. Swerve back rolls KT then headscissors him. Swerve jumping flatliners him for 2. KT is on the apron and Swerve top rope double stomps him. Swerve comes off the top and is caught with a powerbomb. KT rolls him up into a wheelbarrow german. KT pumping knees him for 2.

Swerve headscissors KT into the ropes then hits a kick to the side of the head. Swerve top rope double stomps him for 2. Swerve headbutts him then KT jumping knees him. KT pops up Swerve and Swerve M. Bison stomps him. Swerve hits a nasty JML driver and wins it.

It went on long, going past the allotted time on the show. They kept it moving and it was action packed but selling wasn't of real importance in this one. They just kept going and going here.

Renee interviews Samoa Joe after. Joe said he will make Swerve understand what he is asking for in a title match with him. Joe says Swerve isn't ready and isn't that man.

Overall thoughts: A very wrestling heavy edition of Dynamite with not much happening storyline wise. AEW tends to have time periods where they do more storylines then drop them for more wrestling and we are in the more wrestling time period. As usual, I thought they did too much in a lot of their matches. I didn't really love the show but I didn't completely hate either. There was just nothing going on here but wrestling matches.
