WWF Superstars of Wrestling 7/14/1990

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/02/wwf-superstars-of-wrestling-771990.html

Next week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2024/03/wwf-superstars-of-wrestling-7211990.html

Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura open the show. Jesse says Hulk is retiring. He said Hulkamania was grounded and shot down by the Earthquake.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs Paul Diamond

Jesse said a normal human being doesn't have a snake for a best friend. Jake wristlocks him then Paul shoulders him over. Jake blocks a back roll then misses an elbow drop. Paul misses an elbow drop and takes a knee lift from Jake. Paul goes for leapfrogs then is punched in the face.

Paul back elbows him then Jake short arm lariats him. Jake ddt's him and gets the win.

Paul got a lot in here and the announcers put him over. Jake's short arm lariat and ddt were nice as usual. Jake then lets Damien slither on Paul after.

Hulk Hogan does a promo. He thanks the Hulkamaniacs for everything they have done with the letters and cards. He says he loves them. He talks about retirement but said he wants to explain the facts of life to people. He said God had longterm plans for Hulk before Jimmy Hart, Dino Bravo and Earthquake came along. He said he was taught about the 3 Demandments and did the best he could do.

He said he heard the snap, crackle and pop of his ribs when Quake's crew hit him from behind. He said his mind was going 100MPH when he was on the stretcher. He said he was thinking of retirement in the hospital and then Tugboat came into his life. He said Tug made him smile and asked him where the spark in his eye was. Tug told him let's ride on motorcycles. Hulk said he saw fans while doing it and started thinking about Hulkamania. He said the new generation of Hulkamaniac's are coming around and Hulk said it should be one of them who takes him out, not Quake.

Hulk said Quake's crew were the cause of this and he says, "hell no, I'm not retiring". He says he's a reborn Hulkamaniac and is alive again. He said he signed a contract to wrestle Earthquake at summerslam before this. He said he's going to take the 500lbs of Earthquake and walk around the ring with him before he slams him. He said he hopes Dino Bravo comes into the ring because Tugboat will be in his corner. He asks whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania and Tugboat run wild on you.

It was what you expect and accomplished its goal. It would have been better in front of a live crowd as they would have went nuts for it. They did a good job of making Hulk vs Quake official here for Summerslam.

Tugboat vs Tony Burton

Jesse said Hulk let his ego get in the way. He said Dino will take of Tugboat if he gets in the way during the Summerslam match. Tony tries to shoulder him over but falls back and goes down. Tony hits back clubs then takes an atomic drop that he slides on. Tug splashes Tony then clubs his back. Tug does a nice suplex on him then back body drops him. Tug slams him then hits a 2nd rope splash for the win.

It was a quick squash as expected. Tug had a nice suplex here. I was surprised there was no inset.

WWF Event Center with Sean Mooney

The Boston Garden show is tonight. Sean hypes Duggan vs Earthquake. Sean said Brutus Beefcake was in a boating accident this week and suffered serious facial injuries. Sean said Tito Santana will take his place tonight.

Akeem does a promo on Herculues. He said he will get beat up bad. He said beating people up is what he does best and he wants to beat him up best. Slick says Akeem knows a loss to him pushes him further down the better. Slick says Akeem won't let Herc stand in the way of what destiny has promised them.

Nikolai Volkoff does a promo on Boris Zhukov. He says he was a world champion weightlifter and one of the strongest man in the world. He says he will show Boris what he stands for and says he will go down for good tonight. Volkoff shows off his Soviet and US flags on his jacket.

The Orient Express vs Reno Riggins and Gary Jackson

That's Gary "Night Train" Jackson from Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling. He's still wrestling as of 2024 which is impressive.

The ring announcer calls Sato "Say-to" and Vince corrects the ring announcer. Tanaka hits chops on Reno and Jesse questions how Vince knew this was the first time Gary and Reno teamed up. Vince says you didn't read the history book?

Tanaka back elbows him in the corner then holds him for a Sato boot. Sato chops Reno over. Tanaka punches Reno then superkicks Gary. Jesse said someone is sending Sapphire expensive gifts but they don't know who is doing it. Jesse asks if Vince is doing it. He says it's either him for Famous Amos. Sato boots Gary in the gut. Tanaka superkicks Gary then punches him.

Tanaka hits a shot to the throat then chokes him. Sato snap mares Gary and rakes his foot on his face. Gary takes double boots in the corner. Tanaka does his back crossbody on Gary then Sato side kicks Gary. Sato ligerbombs Gary and gets the win.

It was a longer and very one sided squash here with the jobbers getting almost nothing in. Gary was holding his head after the Sato ligerbomb.

WWF Event Center with Sean Mooney

More hype for tonight's Boston Garden show. Hillbilly Jim says Haku is big and tough. He said he knows he shimmies up the coconut trees and gets the conconuts down in Tonga. He said he's a country boy in his own right and said he's not too different than him. Jim says Haku has to rough up people and kick them when they aren't looking but Jim says he is more straight forward. He says that's a conflict of interest. He says he will show him you can't go messing with this country boy.

Sean asks Earthquake how he will handle the assault of Jim Duggan and his 2x4. Quake says that's a stupid question and and he's as stupid as Duggan. Quake says a 2v4 is made of wood and said an earthquake can smash stone into sand. He said the 2x4 shouldn't be there and said he can't do anything with it if he can't grab it. He says he will be finished anyway when he hits the earthquake.

The Barbarian vs Red Tyler

Bobby Heenan has a headset on. Jesse said he must be in contact with the Goodyear blimp. Red gets hit during intros and is shouldered over. Barb clubs Red's chest. Red gets a kick in then is lariated over the top to the floor. Barb clubs Red's back and stomps him. Barb pushes Red over then back elbows him. Jesse wants to know who Heenan is talking to on the headset. Barb hits a face kick on Red then top rope lariats him. Barb picks up the win.

It was the usual good squash from The Barbarian. His face kick was on point as always. I liked Red's bump to the outside.

The Brother Love Show

Love calls The Hart Foundation former champs and brings them out. Jim says the former stuff will be changed to current soon. Bret said he always thought a tag team was 2v2 and asks what this 3v2 stuff is. He says Demolition is afraid and said they would lose the belts if it's 2v2. Love defends Demolition said they aren't afraid of them. Jim says they will clean up the mess and take their belts back. Jim says he'd tell them that if they were here right now.

Demolition then shows up. Ax says they are the only team that has a million excuses before they lose the match. Crush says they should change their colors to yellow, because that's what they are. Smash says they aren't afraid of anyone and will take them on anywhere and anytime. Bret and Jim then say let's settle this right now and have a match, even if it's 3v2. Demolition nail The Hart's from behind and beat them up. Ref's try to break it up and Jesse said Jim asked for this. The refs have control of it then The Hat's come back and the fight goes to the back.

Koko B. Ware vs Buddy Rose

Buddy hits stomps in the corner and rakes his back. Jesse said it's his birthday and he's mad Vince didn't say happy birthday. Koko misses a corner splash. Jesse said he's 32 and Vince says his waist hasn't been 32 in a long time. Buddy clubs Koko's back then Buddy butt drops him.

Koko does flying headbutts and a nice dropkick. Koko bulldogs him and gets the win.

It was a short one which was disappointing as it could have gone a lot longer. What we got looked good here.

Mr. Perfect vs Darnell Yates

Bobby Heenan still has the headset on. Perfect slaps him and Yates stares him down. Perfect walks on Darnell's back then takes chops and a dropkick. Perfect leapfrogs him and hits a strong dropkick. Vince brings up Brutus Beefcake getting injured in a parasailing accident.

Perfect chops Darnell then double boots him in the corner. Perfect hits his perfectplex and picks up the quick win.

Not a lot to say here but Yates showed some okay fire against Perfect.

Heenan helps Darnell up after and Perfect lariats Darnell.

WWF Event Center with Sean Mooney

Rhythm and Blues do a promo. They said they are getting their guitars tuned up as they got business to take care of tonight. Greg says they sing, dance, rock and roll and are the best tag team in the WWF. Greg says they will tie The Bushwhackers up in knots tonight. Jim Duggan does a promo. He says he's been buying his time since WM6 and said he's been waiting to face Earthquake. He said he can't get the job done when it's 1v1. Duggan says he's coming for him and won't stop until he takes him down.

Jesse and Vince close the show, hyping up next week's show. The Legion of Doom will make their debut on the show. Jesse says wait until you see Hawk and Animal. We then go to the dressing room. Jim Neidhard is fired up while Bret seems to have a black eye. Jim said they attacked them from behind and calls them yellow hyena's. Bret said they don't back down and can't be beat. They said they will take the belts back. Jesse says they don't call them Demolition for nothing and says life's tough.

Overall thoughts:
A little bit of a different episode from usual with Hulk doing his return speech, Brutus Beefcake's injury announcement Demolition and The Hart Foundation brawling on The Brother Love Show and footage from the trainer's room with The Hart Foundation. It was nice to see something different for a change and it was important episode. The Legion of Doom were also announced to be coming in for the next Superstars ep. As always, it was all squashes so the wrestling wasn't must see and while I liked it, I don't know if I'd recommend it.
