WWE NXT 9/20/2022

WWE NXT 9/20/2022

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/09/wwe-nxt-20-9132022.html

NXT 2.0 is no more and we are back to just WWE NXT.

We see clips from earlier in the day. Solo Sikoa and Carmelo Hayes are called into a room with Shawn Michaels. Shawn says Solo competed in a match last week that he was not sanctioned to be in. Shawn says the result of the N-A title match last week cannot stand and he tells him he has to hand over and relinquish the N-A title. Solo says heh ad unfinished business in NXT he had to take care of and Melo seems happy. Michaels wishes him good luck on Smackdown and Solo says, "I told you I had next". Melo holds out his hands to try and get his title. Shawn said he tried to outsmart the system and got burned. He said anytime you think you are bigger thant the business, the business can slap you in the face. Shawn says Melo and others wil meet in a ladder match to determine the next N-A champ.

This was stupid. I didn't get the reasoning behind having Solo win last week and this made even less sense. I don't get how this helped anyone or helped the N-A title.

Axiom vs Nathan Frazer

NF kips up out of a headscissors then NF rolls him up. Ax takes him down and NF flips out of a leg hold. NF shoulders him over and NF headscissors him. Ax handstands out of it then does a neat bridge off a double reverse armbar. Ax springboard armdrags him and dropkicks him then northern lights suplexes him. NF headscissors him out of the corner and has his dive interrupted. Ax comes off the top and is dropkicked in mid-air.

We go to PiP break and return. Ax hiptosses him then dropkicks him. Ax top rope lariats him and gets a 2 on a pin. Ax pele kicks him then takes a hard superkicks for 2. NF goes up top and is interrupted then hiptossed off the top. NF flips off the buckles and is caught with a sleeper. Ax goes up top and NF superplexes him then holds on into a twisting neckbreaker. NF hits a pheonix splash and wins it.

It didn't have a story to it or anything but there was some decent wrestling to be had here. I wasn't a huge fan of it though. I don't like long openers and this was pushing around 15 minutes.

Alba Fyre talks about Mandy Rose. She said her reign was historic but she saw her soul and fear when she put a bat up against her. Alba says she will be the one to take her women's title away from her.

Mandy is seen watching in the back then Toxic Attraction comes in. Mandy says she isn't impressed by Alba then promises to take down Fallon Henley and Alba Fyre.

We get a video on Damon Kemp. He spray paints his Diamond Mine gear and says the look on the Creed's faces was priceless when he cost them the tag titles. If you remember, Roddy was talking about a video tape. Kemp showed the tape. Roddy was shown turning down money from Tony and Stacks, but we see Kemp taking the money. It is then revealed that at the 8/2/22 edition of NXT 2.0, Kemp was supposed to help Tony/Stacks win the tag titles but it got stopped by Santos Escobar's return. Kemp says he thought he was dead in the water and caught when Strong talked about revealing the footage, so he beat up Strong and destroyed his phone. Kemp says Strong is still in the hospital. He said he bets the Creed's are mad at him. He says he will not fight the Creed's 2v1, but 1v1 with the other in the back of the locker room. He said that's all we get today.

Well, this cleared up what Strong was referring to with the video tape. There was some planning here but it kind of feels like they needed to explain away something and set up this scenario to do it. It wasn't a great angle or explanation though because it took too long and wasn't really that clear that Kemp was up to something.

We see Ivy Nile and Tatum Paxley in the back. Ivy blames Kemp for destroying Diamond Mine. Tatum says not to get angry because they have their own business to handle and need to get focused. Ivy said she is focused. They really need to clear up whether Tatum is a Diamond Mine member or not.

Toxic Attraction (Jacy Jayne and Gigi Dolin) vs Diamond Mine (Tatum Paxley and Ivy Nile)

Tatum does a nice leapfrog, a matrix slide under a lariat then a nice dropkick on Gigi. Tatum gets flipped then lariated by Gigi. Tatum is then double tripped and kicked then senton'd by Jacy. Tatum forearms Jacy then takes a back elbow. Gigi boots Tatum in the face then Tatum rolls her up. Tatum swinging facebusters her then Ivy gets the hot tag in. Ivy kick combos Jacy then running kicks her in the corner. Ivy then suplexes her and Gigi backdrops Tatum.

Jacy spinning forearms Ivy then spinning codebreakers her. Ivy step up enzugiri's Jacy then is pushed out of the ring. T-A hits a kick combo on Ivy and gets the win.

This was short and decent with Tatum looking good here.

The Schism is walking towards the building.

We see Tyler Bate and JD McDonagh arrive.

The Schism talk. They say it's time for people to pick a side. They said they will no longer turn the other cheek. Rip says they will never abadon their followers and Jagger says their goal is to make this place better. Gacy says change can be scary but they have given us time to accept the change. Gacy says we will see the world through his eyes. Gacy says it seems the world only responds to a firm hand. He talks about Cameron Grimes and says he made a life altering decision by turning them down. He says the wrath of the Schism is imminent.

The Dyad vs Edris Enofe and Malik Blade

Blade and Enofe run down and brawl with them. Enofe dives on Rip and Jagger outside. Rip hits shots on Blade then Blade dropkicks him. Rip is tripped into a kick and flying lariat combo. Jagger lariats Enofe and Enofe fights off a 2v1. Balde gets the hot tag in and top rope crossbodies both oponents. Dyad is double lariated over the top and Blade tope con hilos both opponents outside.

We go to break and return. Blade and Jadder trade shots then Rip pulls on Blade's sweater. Blade is thrown out. Rip puts him in a sideslam position then Jagger goes over the top and helps pushes him down. The Schism hug and Jagger forearms Blade. Enofe gets a hot tag in and beats up on Dyad. He punch flurries Rip then both Dyad members at the same time.

Enofe trips Rip into a reverse sling blade then knees him. Enofe holds up Rip and Blade jumps over him with a leg lariat. Blade is pulled over the top. Jagger runs up Rip's back and canadian destroyers Enofe then they do their finishing move and win it.

This was fast paced and shorter and I liked it. Enofe looked good here.

We see clips of Quincy Elliot's debut.

Roxanne Perez does a promo on Meiko Satomura. She said she was nervous and challenged her to see how good she was. She said nobody ever hit her harder and she still has bruises. She said Meiko proved why she was an icon. Meiko responded, saying she has fighting spirit and said the day is coming when Perez will be champ. Perez promised to be tougher and more determined for the next match against Cora Jade.

Cora Jade vs Wendy Choo

Cora backs her up early then is double chopped. Wendy headlock takedowns her then handstands out of a headscissors. Wendy hits a nice dropkick then running facekicks her. Wendy then gets whipped into the bottom rope off a blocked baseball slide. Cora running back elbows her against the ropes the uses the ropes to jump up and double stomp Wendy's back hard. Wendy makes a comeback and does a forward handspring into a forearm inb the corner. Wendy germans her.

Wendy misses a corner charge then takes a ddt and Cora wins it.

It was short but they kept it moving. Wendy got to show off some athleticism and I thought this was a fun little match.

Lash Legend pump kicks Wendy after with large heels on then talks trash.

Bron Breakker is interviewed. He thanks NXT for voting him the NXT Superstar of the year. He puts over Bate tonight and says his match with JD McDonagh will be a main event match. He said it could go either way but he is picking Bate tonight.

Trick and Melo talk in the back. Trick says it's a new day and says he is Carmelo Hayes.

We get an Oliver Cartner/Oro Mensah vignette. He is then interviewed. He says Waller is one of the best. He says Oro means gold and he is from Ghana, which is the country of gold. He says tonight he must qualify for the ladder match.

Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams come out. Trick tells everyone to shut their mouth when the A-Champ is speaking. Melo says he is the biggest superstar in NXT. He said he wants everyone involved in his title loss last week fired. He says he doesn't care which bloodline Solo Sikoa comes from, he stole his title. He said he is still the A-Champion no matter which way you flip it.

Chase U comes out. Chase says he saw what happened last week and goes to say his line then Melo interrupts. Melo says this isn't the time. Chase tries to do it again and Trick then tells him not to finish that last line. Chase tries it again then says we have a teachable moment and they fight. Trick and Melo take punches and slide out.

Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes vs Bodhi Hayward and Andre Chase

Chase reverses a hiptoss with one of his own then Trick hits a dropkick on Chase. Melo takes a double back elbow and hits punches/chops on Bodhi. Trick suplexes Bodhi then Bodhi armdrags him. Bodhi does a nice flying shoulder on Trick then Chase russian legsweeps Trick. Chase does the C-H-A-S-E U stomp then Bodhi racks Trick. Trick makes the tag while in the rack then Bodhi is double clotheslines. Melo springboard twisting clotheslines Bodhi then Melo superkicks him while he is down for 2.

Trick stomps Bodhi and euros him then misses a flying move. Chase gets in and hits nice punches then atomic drops Trick. Trick is slammed then popped up into an uppercut. Melo pump kicks Chase and superkicks Bodhi off the apron. Melo springboards and is caught in a roll-up for the surprise Chase win.

This was short and decent. I don't like Melo losing here but it was a major upset and we had a fun moment with Bodhi/Chase celebrating with Chase U in the crowd.

We get a backstage segment with Gallus, Briggs, Jensen and Henley at a card table in the back. Briggs threatens to put someone through a table and it is broken up.

Sanga vs Von Wagner

They trade shoulders to start and Von hits strikes. Sanga clotheslines him and Sanga is pushed in the buckles. Von flurries him with lariats and forearms in the corner then Sanga fires back with punches. Von chinlocks him while pulling the hair then Sanga splashes him in the corner. Sanga sideslams him and Von rolls out.

Sanga facekicks him off the apron then running lariats him on the floor. Stone jumps off the steps onto Sanga and is caught, but Von saves him. Von pushes Sanga into the post then throws him into the steps. Von running facekicks him inside then F-U's him for the win.

They had some sloppy moments here but it was short and it was decent for the little time they got. Von finally gets a win after losing lately.

Wes Lee does a promo on Trick and Melo. He said they did a number on him but he is cleared for action. He said he is ready to qualify for the North American title. He said he refuses special treatment and said he doesn't want a buy into the ladder match for the N-A title, he wants to earn it.

Stacks is interviewed. He says Wes has rocks for brains. He says next week, Wes takes on Tony D for his qualifier and will regret it.

Cameron Grimes does a promo. He says Gacy targets the vulnerable. He says Gacy preaches about peace and compassion but won't get any when they meet. He says he will throw the Schism tree in the woodchipper and use it as fuel to go to the moon.

WWE NXT North American Title Ladder Match Qualifier - Grayson Waller vs Oro Mensah

This is Oro's debut here so he needs to win, but Waller ain't the guy who should be losing to him. Waller pops him in the face to start then lariats him. Oro rolls and kips up out of a wristlock but is brought down by the hair. Waller flips him by the hair. Oro flips off him i nthe corner then mocks his taunbt.

Oro armdrags him then hits a punch flurry. Waller electric chair back drops him then hits knees in the back. Waller stands on his face/neck then blocks his sunset flip. Waller gets on his back and pounds on his neck. Waller then does a Blackpool Combat Club style elbow flurry.

Oro hits some forearms then Oro 2nd rope asai moonsaults him. Oro does a flipping koppo kick. Waler brings his neck down over the top rope and goes for his roll in move but Apollo Crews stops him. Crews is bleeding from the eye then Oro dives on him. Oro hits a stiff spinning heel kick and wins it.

It was shorter and fast paced. Oro won like he was supposed to and I guess if you have Waller lose here, this is the way to do it as it builds up the Crews storyline. Crews' eye blood was freaky.

The Creed's are in the Diamond Mine dojo. Brutus and Julius argue over who gets to beat up Damon Kemp and Julius tells Brutus to end Kemp's career.

Bron Breakker comes out with a special needs kid who is dressed up like a wrestler.

We get a Sol Ruca vignette. We see her at the beach surging and playing guitar. We then see her do flips on the beach. She said she will leave the beach and hit the ring.

NXT Title #1 Contenders Match - Tyler Bate vs JD McDonagh

JD grabs his arm early, Bate kips up and headlocks him. Bate does his escape routine on JD then rolls him up for 2. Bate crossbodies him then armdrags him. Bate knees JD then 2nd rope flying euros him. Bate airplane spins him and JD rolls it into a pin attempt. They trade roll-ups then Bate rolls him from the electric chair. They lariat each other and we go to PiP break. JD gets flipped during the break then dropkicked out. Bate goes for a dive but takes a uranage and a standing moonault.

We return from break and Bate gets out of a boston crab. JD kicks Bate while holding his arm. JD takes a nice bump over the buckles to the outside then Bate does a nice tope on him that puts JD over the announcer's table. Bate has his head banged off the announcer's table and JD says something to Bron Breakker at the booth.

Bate catches JD in the corner with an exploder then does a running SSP for 2. Bate then does JD's hold the arm + kicks move. JD slingshots and is caught in a rack then Bate airplane spins him. Bate gets pulled over the top rope then JD kicks him from the apron and 2nd rope asai moonsaults him outside. JD 450's him for 2. JD hits a stiff brainbuster for another 2 and they trade shots on their knees. They get up and hit each other with punches. Bate runs into a standing ssp from JD but punches him from the mat and knocks him down.

They go up top and trade shots. JD headbutts him up there then top rope spanish flies him. JD then pulls him into a backdrop/olympic slam and wins it.

They did a little too much here and it was mostly just an action match without a lot of great story. Kind of a tough situation here as both guys needed a win but I guess they figured Bate will recover since he was a face. I liked the spot with Bate punching JD from the mat and the airplane spin was good.

Bron Breakker comes out and stared down JD. They argue then Ilja Dragunov comes out! JD flips out and Ilja stares down both guys. Bron holds his title at both guys to close the show.

Overall thoughts: I had some concerns a few weeks ago that this show was becoming a NXT + NXT UK mix and there was some of that here with longer matches and not so much younger talent. The N-A title angle stunk and didn't make much sense and the Kemp angle could have been executed better. There was some decent wrestling, but it had some issues and some of the other angles could have been done better.
