AEW Rampage 7/8/2022

Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2022/07/aew-rampage-712022.html

Eddie Kingston vs Konosuke Takeshita

They do some takeovers early then Eddie gutwrenches him after a knee. They trade chops then Eddie eye pokes him and hits machine gun chops. Eddie then headbutts him then Takeshita ducks chops and hits a flying forearm. Takeshita hits a big lariat and blue thunder drivers him for 2.

We go to PiP break and return to them trading chops on the apron. Takeshita then germans him on the apron and Eddie immediately recovers into an exploder on the floor. They lariat battle and Eddie flips him with a lariat or 1. Eddie then sit out powerbombs him for 2. Takeshita hits forearms and brainbusters him for 2.

They trade forearms on their knees and Eddie hits slaps. Takeshita hits more forearms then Eddie chops and release half nelson suplexes him. Takeshita doesn't sell it for a lariat then they trade more non-sold strikes. Eddie then wins it with the uraken.

Wasn't a fan of this one. The match had no build, they went all out on a B-show and sold very little before the finish. I was particularly disappointed with the floor and apron moves not being sold.

Athena and Kris Statlander do a promo on Jade. Athena says Jade is a coward as she won't fight real competition. They said they aren't going anywhere until they get a chance at the TBS title.

We get a video package on Hook.

The Gates of Agony (Toa and Kaun) vs Lee Moriarty and Jonathan Gresham

This is the GoA's debut. They are an AEWROH creation as Kaun teamed with Moses in ROH. Kaun attacks Lee and sentons him. Kaun drops down then Toa shoulders Lee. Kaun slingshot sentons Lee. Lee goes for a tag but Tully distracts Gresh and he walked away from it. Toa hit a big samoan drop on Lee and we go to PiP break.

We return and Lee dropkicks Kaun in the back. Lee pulls Kaun over the top rope. Lee goes for the tag and Gresh pulls his hand away and leaves. Gresh hugs Tully then Lee takes a spinning clothesline. Kaun then hits a gorilla press gutbuster on him and GoA win it.

Well, what do you really say about this one? Gresh and Lee aren't an established team so this happening doesn't really hit that hard. At least GoA won on their debuts and looked good doing it.

Eddie Kingston does a promo and says Takeshita is the future. He says tell Jun Akiyama he said hello. Eddie says he will make Chris Jericho bleed and says he wants a barbed wire match with Jericho.

Serena Deeb and Mercedes Martinez vs Kayla Sparks and Christina Marie

Marie has some bright American Gladiator-esque tights and takes a waterwheel drop from Deeb. Deeb corner clotheslines her then Marie is catapulted into the bottom rope neck first. MM tags herself in and sliding knee's Marie. MM face kicks her then hangs her up on the top rope where she falls over. MM hits a forearm to the back of the neck on Marie and Deeb wins with the tequila sunrise.

This was just a squash here to push the storyline between Deeb and MM.

Deeb lariats and tequila sunrises MM after.

Tully and Gresham are interviewed. Gresh says Lee isn't his partner. We are told Lee Moriarty gets his title shot against Gresh next week. Tully says he doesn't know if there is enough left of Lee to fight Gresh next week. He then says Tully Blanchard Enterprises is alive and well.

Nese/Sterling and Best Friends do a split screen interview. Sterling says OC has to sign the petition to remove Swerve tonight if Nese wins. Danhausen comes in and says he is OC's lawyer. Nese says not signing the petition is the biggest mistake OC has ever made. This was a dud.

Lee Moriarty and Matt Sydal do an interview. Matt says Gresh's actions were disrespectful and dishonorable. Lee says it will be a fight and he will take the ROH title.

OC signs a contract to fire Swerve Strickland is he loses - Tony Nese vs Orange Cassidy

Nese shoulders him over then OC puts his hands in his pockets like an idiot as he is on the mat. Nese like an idito then does jumping legdrops instead of just laying on him or stomping him. OC then dropkicks him with his hands in his pockets. Nese then shoulders him and mocks the pockets thing.

I've seen enough of this. OC won here and it was a stupid match built on a ridiculous premise. Why does OC care if Swerve is on the roster? And why would he fight for him instead of Keith Lee?

Overall thoughts:
Weird show here. What I saw of the main event was garbage, they did too much in Takeshita/Kingston and the Gresham turn wasn't that well done.
