AEW Rampage 1/7/2022
Last week's show is here: https://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2021/12/aew-rampage-12312021.html
Adam Cole vs. Jake Atlas
I'm used to watching Jake Atlas at 10PM on Fridays. Jake got to do a lot more here than he did on 205 Live. He got most of the offense in this match and had a nice tope and a very nice orange crush. Jake got hurt though on a springboard and they had to rush a finish through to end it. They booked an angle after with the Undisputed Era wanting to attack him but Best Friends came out for the save. Unfortunately, while Jake got to do more, we saw the consequences of getting to do more...you increase your chances of getting injured. I didn't support Jake losing in his first on TV match here.
They did quick promos for an Intertim TNT Title match between Sammy Guevara and Dustin Rhodes since Cody is out. Dustin hasn't won a non-squash match since September.
Andrade El Idolo was interviewed. He said Darby Allin works for Sting and told him to name the price to buy him.
Hook vs. Aaron Solo
Hook pulled out la escalera here and a few suplexes before winning with the tazmission/redrum. QT Marshall got in his face after and went for a shot but took a head an arm suplex instead.
Ricky Starks said he wanted to fight on Battle of the Belts so he asked for a match with Matt Sydal. Matt has won one match since July.
The girls from last week's street fight did a quick promo talking about it.
Riho and Ruby Soho vs. Jamie Hayter and Britt Baker
Hayer threw some awful punches to start. Riho had a nice spinning headscissors here and the heels had no problem throwing her around. Jamie missed a forearm on her, hitting her partner instead and was rolled up soon after in a quick one.
Dan Lambert, Page and Sky did a promo. Lambert again talked about Tony Khan favoring Cody. They were rightfully upset that Dustin got a title match and they didn't.
They ran through some of the matches for next week's Dynamite and Dante Martin is taking on Powerhouse Hobbs. Lio Rush will be in Dante's corner. We never got an explanation for why Dante turned on Lio to join Team Taz and then turned on them during the battle royale since the battle royale wasn't announced until a week after the turn and it couldn't have been part of some plan. The only plausible explanations are that Dante is a time traveler(which is possible since multiple AEW wrestlers can teleport) or that Dante/Lio have an inside source within matchmaking.
We got the usual splitscreen promo for the main. Eddie and crew just walked off and jumped them.
No DQ, No Rules, No Holds Barred: Eddie Kingston, Santana and Ortiz vs. Daniel Garcia and 2point0
This started during the splitscreen promo and continued as we returned from break. One of the cameramen got nailed with a beer. Eddie got hit with a ring bell and got suplexed through a table. Parker got pinned after an ezungiri and a spinning lariat. It's hard to screw these kind of matches up. They aren't the greatest storytelling matches but they give you wild action and weapons shots. 2.0 taped Eddie to the ropes after but Jericho stopped it.
Overall thoughts: Not a bad hour of wrestling, though the women were a little sloppy.
