AEW Dynamite Blood and Guts 5/5/2021

AEW Dynamite Blood and Guts 5/5/2021

Don Callis comes out with Nakazawa and compares him to Inoki. Don says Omega isn't here and Nakazawa will wrestle 2v1.

Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston vs Michael Nakazawa

Omega nails Eddie and Mox with his title during their entrance. Eddie gets choked with Nakazawa's lanyard then 2v1'd. Moxley gets in and evens the odds. Mox topes both opponents and Kenny goes into the rails.

We have a different hard cam angle here tonight likely due to the 2 rings. It's off-center and looks bad.

Nakazawa low blows Eddie and Kenny chokes Eddie over the ropes with his leg. Kennyjumps over Eddie's back and bulldogs him down. Eddie and Kenny trade shots then Kenny eznugiri's him. Kenny misses a 2nd rope moonsault then Eddie lariats him down before making the hot tag.

Mox stomps on Nakazawa in the corner. Nakazawa hulks up and takes off his shirt before taking a german suplex and a piledriver, but Omega breaks the pin. Mox puts Nakazawa in the choke and Omega leaves. Nakazawa then takes a stiff half and half suplex with a lariat and Eddie/Mox win it. Thankfully there were no Nakazawa shenanigans here but this wasn't anything special.

The Young Bucks come out after and taunt them, then the Good Brothers jump Mox/Eddie. Matt Jackson slaps Mox with a shoe before super kicking him then Eddie gets held while he is superkicked. Brandon Cutler follows Kenny back out with a camera. Kenny then gets hit with a one winged angel and Matt pretends to count the pin for him.

Cody Rhodes with Arn Anderson vs QT Marshall with The Factory

Cody goes right for QT and they brawl. QT hits cody with a weightlifting belt. They trade shots and Cody takes a belly ot belly from the top. QT then deadlift german suplexes him. QT and Arn argue outside and Arn nails QT after getting shoved. He then grinds Qt's head into the post. This should have been a DQ but Arn was just ejected only.

We go to picture and picture break. QT has control early but then Cody bralws and gets control back. QT catapults Cody's neck into the bottom rope. We return from break and they collide in mid-air. They trade shots and Cody tries to sunset flip QT, but then QT pulls down hits pants for some reason. They blur it thankfully. Cody hits a top rope moonsault for 2. Cody gets a Cody cutter caught and reversed int oa cross rhodes from QT.

QT almost deadlifts Cody into a buckle bomb, then they reverse each other's tombstones. Cody then hits the tombstone but it is only for 2. Cody then hits a cross rhodes for 2.

Cody helps up QT, but QT gives him the finger. Cody then puts him in the figure four and Cody's eye area is bleeding bad as he wins it. This went longer than it needed to and QT should not be kicking out of multiple finishers. It wasn't that bad but just why is QT in this position? Anthony Ogogo then comes down and punches Cody in the gut. He then puts the British flag over Cody.

Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky are interviewed. Sky calls Sting a mosquito who is sucking on the life blood of AEW. He said Sting has overstayed his welcome and Sky is the franchise now. Page claims Darby is wearing face paint to cover a dent he put in his face. They fight on the uppertop of the stairs and Darby coffin drops Page off a ladder. He gets hit with a trash can then Darby has his face rubbed into shoes. Darby then takes a hard fall down concrete steps and came close to almost going full over the rail. This was a really dangerous segment where someone could have died.

Julia Hart vs Britt Baker

They say Hart is from Calgary though whether she is a Hart family member or not, we don't know. Britt toys with her but she fights back. Britt then hits a sling blade and schweins her, but lets her up on the count. Britt then does the lockjaw and wins it in a quick squash.

We get a "Technique By Taz" segment. He talks about Christian's forgsplash and killswitch. Her critiques how he hit those moves and shows Hobbs throwing Christian. He said Christian's big return honeyoon is coming to an end.

Winner gets a tag title shot - Varsity Blonds vs SCU vs Jurassic Express vs The Acclaimed

Marko Stunt is back. Ew. SCU has to win or they break up here. Caster does a great rap saying the Blonds will be on dark side of the ring in 10 years(a documentary series) and says he will turn Luchasaurus into a fossil. He says he will slap JB like John Stossel, which references David Schultz slapping Stossel.

Everything breaks down early here as they all brawl. We then do another picture in picture break which sucks. We return with The Acclaimed hitting a bulldog on Daniels. Daniels tags in Luchasaurus, and he beats up The Acclaimed 1v2. He then chokeslams both Blondes, and chokeslams one onto the other. Lucha then chokeslams Kaz onto the Blonds outside. JB hits a reverse F-U onto one of the Acclaimed onto the other.

Pillman comes in and springboard clotheslines JB. Daniels runs the apron and hits a flatliner and Kaz flips JB with a lariat. SCU hits a best moonsault ever + spike stombstone to win. There were too many people involved here, it wasn't very long and the break made it shorter. There just wasn't much substance here and it felt like they just hit some cool spots and left.

They do a quick package for Mox vs Nagata. Mox says Nagata called him a little punk and wasn't happy about it since he invited him here. He said Nagata will learn not to run his mouth and says the time when Nagata doesn't get up anymore is soon.

We are now live as the cage is set up. The prior matches were taped before this. Tony Schiavone is out near the cage and brings out Kenny Omega. Nakazawa has to carry some of Omega's titles. Omega asks if we are excited for Blood n Guts and says they will announce the next challenger for the title. Schiavone says Pac and Orange Cassidy will fight next week in a #1 Contender's match and the winner will fight Kenny for the AEW title at Double or Nothing.

Orange Cassidy comes out. Kenny says OC will never be championship material. He takes off OC's glasses and gives them to Nakazawa. He says he wouldn't count on OC getting a title shot and says maybe he will see him years down hte line when he grows up. Then they leave. This wasn't any good.

Tony Schiavone interviews Miro as they are clearing wasting time here. Miro says if you have a title, you have a problem. He has a contract and says he is coming for Darby Allin and his TNT title next week.

Blood and Guts Match - The Pinnacle vs The Inner Circle

This is under Wargames rules. The Inner Circle are wearing black prison suits and Santana/Ortiz have face paint on. The Pinnacle are wearing all white.

Dax and Sammy are up first. Sammy corkscrew drives from one ring to the other on Dax. Dax takes a big back body drop and Sammy backflips over him then dropkicks him. Dax then hits a spinebuster. They trade chops and Dax has his head banged off all the buckles then the corner cam.

They fight on the top rope and Dax hurts his knee when he is crotched on the top. Dax is thrown into the cage asnd starts to bleed. Sammy double springboards from one rope to the other to cutter Dax.

Spears is next in with a chair. He hits a sky high on Sammy and then chairs him. Ortiz is next in and throws a chair at spears, then pounds on Dax. Ortiz throws a chair at Dax twice. Spears and Sammy springboard at the same time and stand on the top ropes together. Ortiz throws a chair at Spears and Sammy spanish flies him off the top rope.

Sammy tries another double springboard and falls over for a big botch. Cash Wheeler is next in and lariats Ortiz hard while he stands on the 2nd rope. Ortiz takes a hard bump for it. Cash helps Dax on a brainbuster and Sammy takes a hard fall down after being thrown in the cage. Sammy then takes another hard bump into the cage and lands on his shoulder. Ortiz takes a gory special into the cage and falls down through the crack of the cage under the ring.

Santana is next in and hits everyone. He hits a hard uranage on Cash then backdrops Dax. Santana is then flapjacked into the cage and falls down through it. They go to picture and picture break which sucks.

Wardlow enters during the break. Wardlow really throws one of his opponents and is 1v3'd. Wardlow throws Sammy hard int the cage then powebombs Ortiz into it. Jake Hager is next in. He his a nice face kick on Cash and vader bombs him. Hager taps out Cash but not everyone is in, so it doesn't count. Warlodw and Hager stare down then trade shots. Wardlow splashes Hager into the cage and MJF gets in.

Wardlow clips Hager and Cash is covered in blood. Jericho is last in and both teams seperate into the two rings. they then charge at each other in the midlde and brawl. Jericho grabs a baseball bat and chases Spear up a pillar. Spears gets stuck in the cage pillar and we go to another picture in picture break.

Santana suplexes someone onto the little platform near the cage. The ring mat is cut open exposing the wood and Spears unscrews a turnbuckle. WE finally come back from break with the mat really ripped off on one ring. S&O spike piledrive FTR with assistance from Sammy off the top onto the exposed wood. Sammy coast to coast dropkicks a chair into spears in the tree of woe position.

MJF gets hit with the steel connector on the turnbuckle. Santana grabs a fork and hits a very bloody MJF with it. Jericho chokes Wardlow with a bat and then punches MJf in the face.

Sammy gets a very high pop-up throw by Wardlow. Wardlow then gets hit with some kind of metal stick in the knee by Santana then is hit with chairs by Ortiz. Wardlow gets hit with a hard chairshot then is speared by Hager. We go to another picture-in-picture break which sucks. MJF is catapulted into the bottom rope.

Tully throws a ref into the rails during the break and grabs a key to unlock the cage. MJF climbs a pillar outside the cage and is headed to the roof. Tully tries to stop Jericho from following but is pushed over.

Jericho has trouble getting up on top of the cage but finds MJF up there. The cage roof is clearly reinforced more in some parts than others. Jericho puts MJF in the Walls of Jericho but MJF low blows him to get out. MJF then armbars Jericho on top of the cage. MJF gets his diamond ring and punches Jericho with it.

MJF looks down over the cage and then looks at Jericho. MJFA says he will throw Jericho off the cage if the IC doesn't surrender then Sammy surrenders to avoid it in a lame ending. A very obvious crash pad is set up near the cage and Jericho is thrown through it. The bump didn't look good at all as it was clear it was padded. MJF says "thank you" as Jericho is checked on by officials. MJF poses on top of the cage to end the show.

The match was really good and actually was a War Games style match. They didn't turn it into a spot fest and stuck to fighting which I liked. There was lots of blood which was welcome and many brutal spots. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It was lame and felt like an obvious cop out. Unfortunately, the lame ending negated a lot of the good in the match. Jericho's lame bump at the end also hurt things.

Overall thoughts: The Blood and Guts match was pretty good minus the finish but I didn't think the rest of the show was anything special.
