Sumo March Haru Basho Day 2

Sumo March Haru Basho Day 2

Ms24e Toyonokuni (0-0) vs Ms23w Kyokutaisei (0-0)
Kyokutaisei got a nice win here. He tried to whip Toyo multiple times by his belt and near the end did a judo sweep to take it.

J8w Takanoyama (0-1) vs J7w Oniarashi (0-1)
Takanoyama got the win but it was due to bad judging. As you can see, that foot is out so the wrong call was made. They slipped and slid everywhere until Oni tried to throw Takano and apparently got thrown out.

M13e Tochinowaka (0-1) vs M12w Masunoyama (1-0)
Masunoyama won after getting really low on Tochinowaka and really just roughing him out of there. With a few extra feet, Tochino probably would have won but not today.

M10e Takarafuji (1-0) vs M11w Jokoryu (1-0)
Jokoryu won after a great effort by Fuji. I cannot believe Fuji held balance above with only one leg on the ground like that as it is some serious talent. Jokoryu had his way with him mostly moving all around him until the push out to win.

M8e Aoiyama (1-0) vs  M9w Yoshikaze (0-1)
Yoshikaze got a hard fought win here as he went really deep to get Aoiyama out while not falling down himself.

Aran (M5) vs Shohozan (M4) (EXTRA)
Shohozan won when Aran just couldn't get any grip and walked right out.

Goeido vs Ikioi (EXTRA)
Goeido won in a quick and explosive battle here.

M3e Tokitenku (0-1) vs S1w Baruto (1-0)
Baruto won with a nice throw here. Toki went at this the wrong way and went for a slow match which aided Baruto.

O1e Kisenosato (1-0) vs M2w Myogiryu (0-1)

Big upset win for Myogiryu here. He had a very good tachi-ai that knocked Kisen back and Kisen just couldn't match power with him and loss. Bad loss for Kisenosato here as it's only the second day.

M2e Chiyotairyu (0-1) vs O2w Kotoshogiku (1-0)
Chiyotairyu wins! Big upset here again! The tachi-ai charge had some serious power and at the end of that crash Kotoshogiku slipped and went down!

O2e  Kakuryu (1-0) vs K1w Aminishiki (0-1)
Aminishiki is 14-9 against Kakuryu.
Kakuryu won here with lots of power and strength that consistently kept Aminishiki off balance and put him out.

K1e Tochiozan (0-1) vs O1w Kotooshu (1-0)
Tochiozan is 10-8 against Kotooshu.
TOCHIOZAN WINS! TRIPLE UPSETS! Tochiozan basically pulled down on the mawashi to win. It didn't even look like a big pull but I guess it was good enough. Today is a bad day to be an Ozeki and Tochiozan goes 11-8 all time against Kotooshu.

Y1e Harumafuji (1-0) vs M1w  Tochinoshin (0-1)
Harumafuji is 11-4 against Tochi.
Harumafuji won after bulldozing Tochinoshin right out of there and knocking over the salt guy. Hey if you can take out two guys instead of one, go for it.

M1e Takayasu (0-1) vs Y1w  Hakuho (1-0)
Easy win for Hakuho as he won in seconds. No effort at all here.

Rankings:
2-0: Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, Goeido, Baruto, Toyonoshima, Okinoumi, Jokoryu, Masunoyama and Wakanosato. From Juryo - Kyokushuho, Chiyootori, Tamaasuka, Satoyama and Asasekiryu.

1-1: Kisenosato, Kotooshu, Kotoshogiku, Tochiozon, Chiyotairyu, Myogiryu, Shohozan, Aran,  Gagamaru, Kitataiki, Aoiyama, Kyokutenho, Fujiazuma, Yoshikaze, Takarafuji, Takekaze, Shotenro, Sadanofuji, Chiyonokuni, Sagatsukasa, Daido and Oiwato

0-2: Aminishiki, Takayasu, Tochinoshin, Tokitenku(HA!), Ikioi, Kaisei, Toyohibiki, Tamawashi, Tochinowaka and Sotairyu

Overall thoughts: Fun day with three big upsets. Definitely worth a look!

  1. Did you see the 4+ minute long bout between Miyabiyama & Wakakoyu in Juryo? It was actually quite boring, sort of like watching two really bad soccer teams play to a 0:0 draw in a rainstorm.

I'm going to pick Goeido as my choice for the best non-Yokozuna of this basho, although I still think the two Mongolians will stay on top and compete for the cup. Baruto looks better to me this time, but that knee is being held together with gum & twine and could go anytime.

    1. You are right about Miyakojima. Man is he thin. Can't wait to see how much they can actually beef him up to.

Nope, I missed that one and it seems like it was a good call lol Of course now I'm going to see it just to see how bad it was lol

Osunaarashi vs Kyokutaisei is tommorow. That'll be an interesting one with Osuna being more top strong and Kyoku being better with his legs.

Goeido is definitely off to a good start and should probably get Baruto tommorow. Baruto looked stronger today but he didn't get charged too hard. Kotoshogiku did though. That was like thunder.

  2. Oh, wow, Osuna vs Kyokutaisei is just the prototypical strength vs technique match. Osuna would probably be a defensive end that blasts through the offensive line and kills quarterbacks if he was American, while Kyokutaisei studied with a smaller champion that was a master of little-used techniques, many culled from judo.

    1. Definitely should be a fun one. I have no idea who will win.
