Sumo January Hatsu Basho Day 10

Sumo January Hatsu Basho Day 10

Genakiho vs Orora
Orora was embarassingly overpowered by a man half his size today.

Takanoyama vs Satoyama
Nice movement by Takano today to take the win. He looked calm, cool and collected out there:

Jokoryu vs Homarefuji
Jokoryu got tossed bad here in a rough loss.

Tochinowaka vs Chiyotairyu
Good job by Tochinowaka to take the win today. He almost got eliminated but recovered and took hold to get the win.

Takayasu vs Takarafuji
Takayasu pulled the big upset out to take down Takarafuji. Takara just got bettered today and took a loss, his 2nd of the tournament.

Tokitenku vs Shotenro
Forget this match. Tokitenku side stepped another guy who was in the hunt to save his underwhelming butt. This guy is a total ass.

Kisenosato vs Kotoshogiku
Ozeki super battle here.
It was a very even and stalemated battle with Koto eventually stepping out and losing.

Hakuho ve Goeido
Hakuho and Goeido were battling and Hakuho grabbed an arm and pushed him forward and out to take the win.

Harumafuji vs Baruto
Dickhead move by Harumafuji to sidestep Baruto. Come on. You are a yokozuna and you need to do that?

Rankings:
10-0: Harumafuji

9-1: Hakuho

8-2: Kisenosato, Takayasu, Takarafuji and Tochinowaka.

7-3: Kakuryu, Tochinoshin, Jokoryu and Shotenro

6-4: Kotooshu, Kotoshogiku, Myogiryu, Fujiazuma, Okinoumi and Tokitenku

5-5: Baruto,  Goeido, Aran, Aoiyama, Chiyotairyu, Kitataiki and Sadanofuji.

Others:
2-8: Shohozan(awful tournament)

1-9: Miyabiyama and Toyhibiki

Overall thoughts: Kind of a not so good day of sumo. I'm not a fan of henka and it ruined a bunch of people's chances for no reason today. There's no excuse for Harumafuji pulling it on a ONE LEGGED STRUGGLING RIKISHI or Tokitenku pulling that crap again.

  1. Henkas and similar don't bug me as much as they bug you.

I've been lurking on the sumo forum and some of those guys are pretty douchey.

Back to work, so I can't stay up to the middle of the night to see the top divisions live, and I think I've seen enough Jonokuchi/Jonidan for the rest of my life. The bottom two divisions are almost nothing but fast skinny teenagers trying not to get crushed to death while waiting for the weight to come, slow fat unathletic teenagers who obviously are never getting past Sandanme, guys coming off long injury breaks, and old terrible lifers that are the sumo equivalent of Yuiga and are probably only still in the business because they don't know what else to do and the stablemaster and higher-rank guys like the chanko they cook.

    1. Yeah, I think I'm in the extreme on the henka stuff. I just wanna see two guys go at it with the better man winning. It's more forgiveable when it doesn't matter, but a few guys got derailed due to various sidestepping techniques, who were over acheiving as is.

That probably describes most of them! Sumo is probably worse than wrestling in post-career job oppurtunities because unless you reach the top division, you can't really coach or do anything else related to it.

    2. Did you really stay up to watch the top division live? You are hardcore man! Big props for that!

Yeah those guys are a little rough...

  2. Yeah, I had the stream on my laptop and fed it to my TV. I fell asleep somewhere in the middle, but woke up to see most of the makuuchi.

I won't be doing that very often, if ever again, as it's easy enough to see anything on Araibira (it gets posted SO fast).

Maybe I'll set my alarm for Day 15 if we get yokozuna v yokozuna for the whole she-bang. I'm sure Jason in Japan will be freaking out if his boy Harumafuji can put up a 15-0.

  3. That's still pretty awesome though. I really want to try it sometime but it screams bad idea.

I couldn't run this thing without people like araibira. That guy rules.

He really might do it. I think he will probably at worst go 14-1 to take it(thought I still favor Hakuho) as at this point, Hakuho would have to beat him twice on Day 15 to win, and I don't know if he can do it.
